Championship Week is really just getting started.

But it will have to go a long way to top what happened yesterday.

In what were undoubtedly two of the most memorable Section 1 semifinals in history, defending champions Lakeland/Panas (Class A) and John Jay (Class B) advanced to the finals in the most dramatic fashion possible as top-seeded Suffern and Somers both fell, respectively.

Lakeland/Panas overcame a late three-goal deficit to pick up its second one-goal win of the season against Suffern, beating Suffern 13-12 in triple — yes, triple — overtime on a goal by junior Tony Laguerre.

John Jay, which had led by three goals late in the game only to fall behind, rallied back from a two-goal deficit with a minute and a half remaining in regulation to outlast Somers on a goal with four seconds left in overtime by Mike Lupinacci (pictured at left in the photo by Jim Stout/MaxPreps.com.)

I haven’t seen the footage of the games yet. I’m going to check it out today at our Long Island studio. Then, we will break down the highlights, have post-game interviews and previews of the finals on MSG Varsity’s “SportsDesk” at 6 p.m. on Channel 14. (The show reairs at 9 p.m.) Between JJ-Somers and LP-Suffern, that’s definitely “must-see TV.”

You can check out Isaac Cass’ story on the John Jay-Somers game at msgvarsity.com now by clicking here. There’s also a photo gallery and video highlights.

For the story, highlights and photos from the LP-Suffern game from Justin Mintzes, check this link.

In the meantime, you can relive all of yesterday’s amazing action now, by checking out yesterday’s “Gameday” post by clicking here, and reading the real-time score updates, coupled with the reaction.

In the other sectional semis yesterday, Yorktown easily handled Tappan Zee 18-4 in Class B and Mahopac beat White Plains 9-3 in Class A.

So Thursday’s Section 1 Class A and B finals at Suffern Middle School are set. Lakeland/Panas, making its fifth straight title-game appearance, takes on Mahopac, making its first appearance in the finals since 2005, at 3 p.m. Yorktown, making its 32nd straight sectional final, faces John Jay for the Class B final at 5:30 p.m.

We’ll know later today what teams will be playing in Thursday’s 8 p.m. Section 1 Class C title game at Suffern following the conclusion of today’s semifinals between Pleasantville and Byram Hills and Dobbs Ferry and Pleasantville.

We’ll also know what teams will be squaring off for the FCIAC crown on Friday night at Brien McMahon in Norwalk in short order.

That’s because Ridgefield and defending FCIAC champion Greenwich meet in one semi at 5 p.m. today at McMahon, in a rematch of a quarterfinal-round game last year won by the Cardinals.

Then, in the nightcap at McMahon, traditional rivals Darien, the top seed, and red-hot Wilton collide at 7:30 p.m., or 45 minutes after the first game ends.

As if all that’s not enough — and my goodness, don’t you think it ought to be — there’s a full slate of quarterfinal-round action in Section 8 (Nassau County) and Section 11 (Suffolk County).

The matchup we’re flagging is the Suffolk Class A contest between fifth-seeded Connetquot and No. 4 Sachem North.

Before we get to today’s schedule rundown, just a quick reminder to check in here with score updates from the field today with your mobile devices.

    • Old Growth says:

Ridgefield needs to watch out for a let down in the 3rd quarter. That is how they lost the last game.

  16. sec1 says:

    7-3 Byram Final
    GB F/O big diff

    • Plenty to Clean Up says:

Sec 1, I agree BH won today’s faceoff/groundball battle. BH still very sloppy with dropped balls and poor clearing passes.

For BH to have a chance against Bville they’ve got to cut down on the drops and clear better. Need to look for the easy pass and not look for the homerun pass.

Their defense was strong today -many good checks and good team defense -BH needs to play smart and close to error free on Thursday night to have a chance.

  17. LI Lax says:

Connetquot pulls it off, they win 10-9

    WI wins 15-9

  18. Joe Lombardi says:

    Final: Ridgefield 10, Greenwich 4

Second-seeded Greenwich, the defending FCIAC champs, awaits a state tournament berth.

Dobbs Ferry’s Avalos is a great player. He is the man to watch this summer and next season. He led the team in goals and assists. He is all team. Congrats to the Eagle.

    • NYmike says:

Hard earned at 15-2? Really? I love those Bronxville kids and that community, but – c’mon man. Congrats to DF on an excellent first year.

      • ReLAX says:

I think it’s Dobbs’ first yr of varsity lax. Good job for them to get there, but you’re right the ville has had an easy path to the finals. Sure hope the BH kids can give the ville a game. So far it’s been a cakewalk!

  25. Joe Lombardi says:

Ben Preston scores two in a one-minute stretch. 7-3

  26. Joe Lombardi says:

Tony Britton intercepts a pass while Wilton is a man up and finds Case Matheis for a goal. It’s 8-3 Wave.
