Senior captain James Wilson, an attackman, hopes to help Kennedy Catholic get by Croton today at 4:30 p.m. at Kennedy Catholic. The Gaels, who are coming off a 10-9 loss to Haldane, have won five of their last seven.

Believe it or not, gang, state championships have already been awarded in three states.

But unlike Arizona, Florida and Texas, the postseason has not yet started in Connecticut and New York.

That changes this week.

Seedings will be unveiled tomorrow in downstate New York and Wednesday in Connecticut. Postseason action begins on Thursday in New York and next week in Connecticut.

College action is well immersed in the postseason, of course.

This past weekend featured wall-to-wall NCAA tournament action.

Among the highlights, Maryland effectively using the hidden-ball trick in a win over North Carolina — a play that fooled not only the Tar Heels but the ESPN announcers and cameramen.

If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s definitely must-see TV. And who knows what high school team from the nation’s No. 1 hotbed for lacrosse, the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region, will be inspired by it and try to run it in the postseason?

You can check it out by clicking here.

Elsewhere, former Ridgefield star Matt White scored in OT to lift Virginia past Bucknell 13-12 in the opening round.

Bucknell, picked by many to pull the upset, probably would have had it not elected to take not one but two shots on goal leading 12-11 with first just over two minutes remaining and then, with 1:53 left, resulting in a change of possession. UVa then tied it at 12-12 and forced OT on a goal by Steele Stanwick.

As we start postseason play, many players and coaches undoubtedly now realize the importance of holding on to the ball with a lead in the closing minutes. After all, the only way the score can be tied if the team leading has possession is on a turnover, or change of possession after a shot on goal.

Now, back to high school action.

Defending FCIAC champion Greenwich, fresh off a 10-8 loss to Rye, visits defending Section 1 Class A champion Lakeland/Panas. Though the game has no meaning as far as postseason seedings, it’s a marquee matchup of two of the region’s premier programs.

Suffolk has a couple of interesting games as Smithtown West, whose only losses have been OT setbacks to Ward Melville and West Islip, as well as to Garden City, plays at Northport. Ward Melville, meanwhile, visits East Islip. West Islip takes a 36-game win streak into its game at Walt Whitman, and Sachem North visit Connetquot.

Also of note, Rye and Putnam Valley, the teams that have squared off the last six years in the Section 1 Class C title game, meet again. This will be the teams’ one and only meeting this year because the Garnets have moved up to Class B.

    BBBear

Way to go hanging in there for the double OT win over Hollow!

  2. Old Rugger says:

Looks like North Salem and Briarcliff will end season with same points 39 for seeding purposes(probably the 9 and 10 seeds in C playoffs)

    FL 9 HG 6
    SW 13 Nport 8
    WM 10 EI 8
    WI 11 WW 7
    Rye 15 PV 2
    Pelh 10 DF 8
    Brew 9 NS 7
    Pville 14 SH 9
    KC 9 CH 8
    BH 11 Scdale 5

  3. ReLAX says:

The irony in the Bison loss is that going into the game Quint noted how the Bison like to press w/ the goalie & then Ghitelman & UVA put the game into OT using it. As I watched it the open net seemed so enticing & Ghitelman’s doubles really pushed the action. I’m sure it will haunt the Bison faithful for awhile

  4. Gonzo says:

The Class C seedings are massively dependent on the outcome of today’s games. Here are my guesses after looking at the various teams’ records, those of their opponents and calculating their total points:

If Pleasantville beats Sleepy Hollow and Bronxville beats Clarkstown South today, Pleasantville would get the top seed and Bronxville the no. 2 seed

If Dobbs Ferry loses to Pelham today, they get the no. 3 seed and Pelham gets the no. 6 seed

If both Pleasantville and Bronxville were to lose while Dobbs Ferry were to win, Dobbs would get the no. 1 seed, Bronxville the no. 2, Pleasantville the no. 3 and Sleepy Hollow the no. 4.

If Byram Hills beats Scarsdale and Sleepy Hollow loses, Byram gets the no. 4 seed and Sleepy Hollow the no. 5

Whoever wins in the Kennedy/Croton game today grabs the no. 7 seed if Pelham beats Dobbs Ferry but nabs the no. 6 seed if Pelham loses. The loser of the Kennedy/Croton game will receive a no. 11-13 seed.

If North Salem beats Brewster today, it gets the no. 8 seed if Pelham defeats Dobbs Ferry and the no. 7 seed if Pelham loses. If North Salem loses, it falls into a tie (based on points for wins, wins vs teams with 0.500-0.749 winning percentages and wins vs teams with winning percentages of 0.750 or better) for the 11th seed with the loser of the Croton/Kennedy game. I do not know what the tie-breaker rules are.

Irvington gets the no. 8 seed if North Salem loses and the no. 9 if North Salem wins

If Pelham loses and North Salem wins, Pelham falls into a tie for the no. 10 seed with Briarcliff. Again I do not know what the tie-breaker rules are.

If Pelham win beats Dobbs Ferry and North Salem losses, Briarcliff gets the no. 10 seed.

The only other variable that could impact these is the outcome of Ardsley’s final game of the season over the weekend. I haven’t seen the result. Ardsley was 8-7 going into the game. If they won and beat a team with a winning record, they could push up above Briarcliff and Pelham (if it were to lose)

    • BigBadBear says:

      that really cleared things up!

    • laxfan says:

by my math, if both teams win today both Bronxville and Pleasantville will have the exact same index, 4.19. 4 points for each win and 1 point for each win against a team over .500 and 2 points for a win against a team over .750. That would give each team 67 points divided by 16 makes 4.19. If the next tiebreaker is common oppoonents, the only one they have in common is Fox Lane who Bronxville beat 9-1 while Pleasantville won 8-4 which would give the edge and #1 seed to Bronxville

      • NYmike says:

P’villle lost to Fox Lane 8-4

      • Gonzo says:

Assuming Bronxville and Pleasantville both win today, by my count, the Broncos would come up with 67 points while the Panthers would have 68. Each team would have 15 victories and thus 60 “base” points. Bronxville would have 7 wins over teams with 0.500-7.490 records(Fox Lane, Marmaroneck, and Fordham Prep once as well as White Plains and Pelham twice) for 7 more points. Meanwhile, Pleasantville would have beaten Croton and Briarcliff twice for 4 extra points and Sleepy Hollow (current record 12-3) twice for another 4 points.

    • Old Rugger says:

Gonzo, I believe you miscalculated on Irvington as they ony played 14 games so will be higher seed like a 7, which moves the others down one in your forecasting, but with these formulas who knows. When teams tie what is the deermining factor as I see North Salem and Briarcliff with the same numbers for either the 9 or 10 seed?

  5. GreenBear says:

Im assuming they will do everything possible to get the games in because there is so much riding on the outcome of these games with respect to the seedings?

  6. CT Lax says:

    Prediction: Greenwich 9, LP 6

  7. LI Lax says:

    My guesses for Suffolk

    WI 15, Whitman 6
    WM 10, EI 7
    SW 16, Northport 6
    SN 12, Connetquot 8

  8. slacrosse says:

Caff, Prunty, Monte, others–get it DONE today Rebels!!

  9. laxfan says:

really hope those guys can pull this one off. it’d be a big momentum swing for them coming off all of the close losses especially at somers. best of luck to them today!

  10. The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

    Prediction:
    Suffern 15
    Valley Central 2

Should be a breeze for Suffern…

    • Big Easy says:

And the point would be…? Valley Central would be a breeze for any quality Section 1 team, no?

      • i'm blue da ba dee da ba die says:

Obviously, but its nice to see the boys have an easy win to secure the number 1 seed.

        • ???? says:

If that is not a league-mandated game, why would they ever schedule such an opponent?…I would think suffern could find many more challenging games given how many soft games they already have…

          • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

Well everyone can complain about schedules all you want but the Mounties will most likely get the 1 seed so clearly they did something right this season…

    • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

      16-5 Suffern win

  11. ReLAX says:

    Brunswick 5 TP 2 9:40 left 2nd qtr

  12. sec1 says:

    Brunswick 6-2 over Trinity Pawling 2nd 5:15

  13. LI Lax says:

Reading on laxpower that Whitman is out to a 6-2 first quarter lead against WI.

  14. sec1 says:

    Brunswick 8-3 Half

  15. Joe Lombardi says:

Fox Lane leads Greeley 3-2 at the half.

    • Joe Lombardi says:

Greeley scores in the final seconds to win 7-6.

      • BH says:

Cory Ekstrom scored the winning goal with 3 seconds left.
        Ekstrom had 5 goals
        Gladstone had 2 goals

      • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

any word on WP Mamo game???

        • Laxn says:

          10-7 White Plains over Mamo

          • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

Looks like Suffern could be seeing LP in the semis…BRING EM ON!!!

          • lax says:

            Careful what you wish for.

          • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

Just saying it should be a fun one!

          • NYmike says:

            Loomings . . . .

          • ReLAX says:

Easy now! Your Mounties lost to L/P once already this season & Greenwich is better than anyone your boys have played this yr w/ the exception of maybe Pac, who beat your team. L/P’s gonna want to turn that “smack” your talkin into a “smackdown” after this loss! I think suffern might want to sneak up on the L/P’s & Pac’s that are “looming”

          • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

For the record I am not part of the team I am just a fan and I would love to see that game. I am not talking smack. LP is a good team that beat Suffern earlier. It might be tough for the 1 seed to sneak up on anybody. And finally, if a Suffern blogger is what LP (or any team for that matter) needs to get motivated then they are doing something wrong…

          • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

And since when do people on this blog take me seriously? Other than friend of the Wall Ball Ballers, Joe Lombardi and D-Pac, iI didn’t think there were many others…

          • i'm blue da ba dee da ba die says:

Let’s do it. I’m looking forward to the Mounties having a chance to beat LP after such a tight game last time. Suffern has only looked better and “Sleepy” Mike Johnson IS carrying the team to the section finals.

  16. ReLAX says:

8-3 Brunswick @ half. Some real good players on both teams. The Bruins have more.

  17. Pequa says:

Myles Jones must be doing work on WI… I didn’t think Whitman would get 6 on WI for the game let alone 1 quarter.

  18. Laxer says:

wow that is crazy if they are really beating them. West Islip does struggle with good middies but this is crazy. MJ must be killing it if that is true.

  19. Laxer says:

I just looked it up it says whitman 6 west islip 12 after 1 no way that many goals scored in first.

  20. ReLAX says:

9-6 TP scores on EMO 2;30 left in 3rd

  21. sec1 says:

    Wick 10-6 end of 3

  22. ReLAX says:

10-7 TP scores on a quick stick on the doorstep 9mins left in the game

  23. sec1 says:

    Wick 10-8 7:45

  24. lax-for-life says:

Hearing Rye leads PV 9-1 at the half. Wholesale substitutions by Rye.

  25. ReLAX says:

11-9 TP has played well in the 2nd half. Wick makes it 12-9 some bone crushing checks w/ no calls 13-9 no 13-10 final wick

  26. LI Lax says:

17-8 WI after 3. 11 goals in the third. This is the third time WI has been behind at halftime against a team not in the top six in Suffolk A right now.

  27. sec1 says:

    13-10 Wick Final

  28. score says:

BH over Scarsdale 15-7 to finish at 12-4–may be key in Class A/B seedings b/c its opponents this season should now get 2 bonus points

    • Raining Down on Scarsdale says:

My Raiders took it on the chin today. Kept it close for a quarter and a half due to strong defense and BH’s countless turnovers.Started the 3rd again OK than eventually the wheels came off for good. Both teams better pull it together for the playoffs or they’ll both be one and done.

      • . says:

no offense but i feel like bh did not need to put in a great deal of effort this close to the post season. also it looks like they will be playing a low caliber team in the first round so i doubt they will be one and done

        • Raining Down on Scarsdale says:

no offense taken, having caught a couple games of BH its easy to notice they typically play down to their competition. A perfect example of that would be their most recent game against Harrison. It could have been ugliest game ever. Bh’s poor play and unforced errors were only out done by Harrison’s. If thats how they are going to play even against a “low caliber” team, they might just be one and done. They need to be careful so good luck.

One last thing I noticed BH’s middies thing I noticed

  60. CardsLax27 says:

Wow…Section 1 and the FCIAC have yielded some thrilling encounters in ’11:

    – Somers comes roaring back from an 11-3, mid-3Q deficit to stun NC

    – NC battles back from a first-half deficit to topple John Jay, 8-7

    – Greenwich squanders a big lead against L/P, then knocks them off in OT

    – Rye takes a tight “border battle” against the Cards, 10-8

    – Ridgefield takes a tight “border battle” against Jay, 9-7

Interestingly, Yorktown’s the only team that can’t seem to keep things interesting. Maybe Y’town-Wilton will make up for it.
