Briggs Barton and Rye hope to win their ninth straight game, but to do it, the Garnets must beat defending FCIAC champion Greenwich today.

It all started just seven short weeks ago with the first Saturday of the regular season as Garden City and Smithtown West squared off, with Garden City picking up a 6-2 win.

A week later, the Saturday slate was highlighted by showdowns between Garden City and Ward Melville, Yorktown and John Jay and Delbarton and St. Anthony’s.

Now, here we are, in New York State, at least, set for our final Saturday of the regular season. (Connecticut has one more regular-season Saturday to go after this one),

That went by fast, didn’t it?

It sure did.

But that’s the beauty of lacrosse.

It doesn’t drag on like some other sports and other seasons, and it always leaves players, fans and coaches wanting more.

That will undoubtedly be the case once again this Saturday.

If you’re home around midday, you can catch the contact between New Jersey power Mountain Lakes and Shoreham-Wading River live on MSG Varsity at 12:30 p.m. (Channel 14, Optimum).

Section 1’s hottest team, Rye, which has won eight straight, takes on defending FCIAC champ Greenwich at 2:30 p.m. at Rye. Greenwich (8-5) has wins over a pair of 11-3 teams — Ridgefield and  Fairfield Prep — to its credit.

Somers will go for its fifth straight win when it takes on defending Class A sectional champ Lakeland/Panas as part of “Communities Collide to Support Our Veterans.” For more on the special day in store, click here.

Ward Melville, which has outscored its last two opponents 32-9, led by Tyler Hegarty’s nine goals and two assists and Will Mazzone’s three goals and six assists, hosts Sachem East in Senior Day.

Brien McMahon, coming off a tough 12-9 loss to Ridgefield, host New Canaan while Ridgefield faces neighboring Danbury.

Yorktown, which dropped a 14-8 decision to Ridgefield in its last outing, renews its rivalry with St. Anthony’s.  The teams have split their last two meetings, with the winning team scoring exactly 14 goals in each of those games.

Before we run down the schedule, don’t forget to check in here with updates from the field with your mobile devices. You can post them directly as comments on this thread or, if it’s easier, email them to us at info@laxlessons.com.

The amount of score updates we’ve received here from that first Saturday to now has been truly remarkable. I’m sure that all you folks will even go above and beyond that now that the games have even more meaning and the postseason is about to start.

Speaking of the postseason, well, it is starting at the college level, of course. And today is Day 1. There are quite a few games on TV today on ESPN2, including Hofstra at Johns Hopkins at noon today, as well as ESPNU all day today and tomorrow.

  1. WestLax says:

    Preview Greenwich at Rye
Today will be Rye’s toughest test to date. Even though Rye has a 7 game winning streak the balance of that part of their schedule has been against weaker opponents. That being said they beat New Canaan 12-8. Rye’s most recent resurgence has come from Briggs Barton, Jack O’Callahan with great feeds from Matt McCreddie. If these 3 guys can play at the level they have been playing it will be a close game. Key Matchup Barton vs. Sands. If Rye can win more then 60% of face offs and limit turnovers this could be an upset. We will be watching.

  4. HV Lax says:

Suffern beat Fox Lane 8-3. I didn’t do the math but seems like Suffern is in good shape to be #1 seed in A.

    • Joe Lombardi says:

Some more info – Suffern finished with a 2-to-1 edge in faceoffs, helping to make up for 20 turnovers. Five Suffern goals came from the top of the crease. Defenseman Kyle Eastwood and goalie Mike Johnson had big games for the Mounties.

      • i'm blue da ba dee da ba die says:

“Sleepy” Mike Johnson may be the biggest sleeper (haha, get it?) in the section. He seems to get better every game. The Wall Ball Ballers are starting to think that his actions that we once mistook for sleepy and lethargic is actually just his swag.

    • Ilax2 says:

If Suffern gets the 1 seed, the Section really needs to look into a better way to put seedings together for the postseason.

      • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

can somebody call Whine One One to get a Wahmbulance over here

        • The Rock says:

          LOL

        • Ilax2 says:

A Suffern fan talking smack. Priceless.

This season is actually a pretty good representation of the history of your program. Not a single notable win.

          • the boy who cried wolf says:

And may I ask where you hail from good sir?

          • i'm blue da ba dee da ba die says:

All I gotta say is that the number 1 seed is going to be ours. If “Sleepy” Mike Johnson, and our stellar offense keep it up it’s going to be hard to beat us.

Prediction: Suffern v. Mahopac Section 1 final. Suffern wins 7-6.

          • Ilax2 says:

Let me guess – you’re gonna take the momentum from that win and let it carry you to a State Title, taking down West Islip and West Genny on the way? Ha. The delusion is strong west of the river. Pretty sure Suffern fans have predicted section titles every year for the past 25.

Where am I from? I’m from a place where quality strength of schedule and quality lacrosse on the whole is respected. We’re not from the same place.

          • i'm blue da ba dee da ba die says:

We’re not deluded at all. The top competition is clearly us, Mahopac, and Lakeland-Panas. We already lost a close game to LP that could’ve easily been ours and on a good day I we can compete with Mahopac. Nobody here is predicting a state title…

And I’m sure you’ve heard these predictions from all your good Suffern buddies and the tons of Suffern people that have posted on this blog in prior years…. wait, those people don’t exist.

          • the boy who cried wolf says:

Fair enough keep hiding behind Westchester. We are still going to root for our team and have fun. Come to a Suffern game and watch one of these days before you judge

    • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

Sleepy Mike Johnson played incredible in goal. The Wall Ball Ballers almost ran out of songs to sing for him. Came back after injury and first save back in was a save after a turnover 7 feet in front of the goal with a 1 on 1 with him. If he was a player in Madden he would have a 99 toughness. Mikey J was a force today and if he continues to play like that Suffern is going to be pretty tough to beat…

  5. Joe Lombardi says:

  31. Laxtime says:

#8 is Christian Bonaventura for Rye.

Great job Garnets! They are playing the best of anyone in Class B right now for sure.

  32. Big Easy says:

Great win for Rye! Congrats! Slacrosse, apologies for my earlier comments regarding Ridgefield…it was “Syracuse” I was referring to as a hater…you are alright in my book…that is an impressive win and I would agree that Rye is a tough “out” in Class B! Did Rye play their zone defense all game?

  33. laxforfun says:

Great win for Rye, glad they are healthy and pulling it together at the right time. Welcome to the wild and crazy class B ride !!! Right now it is anyone’s game.

  34. Lax Novice says:

Another great win for Rye, 2-0 vs tough FCIAC opponents Greenwich and New Canaan. I bet they wish sectionals started tomorrow.

  35. score says:

    Byram defeated Queensbury upstate 9-3.

    • slacrosse says:

Hey congrats to BH on the win and good to see BH getting out of the Section to face some well-known teams.

  36. slacrosse says:

Great overall effort by Rye and it needed to be as Greenwich was really tough applying strong offensive pressure throughout the game.

Gotta particularly compliment Rye’s Bonaventura with 5 goals as well as Spencer, Rye’s goalie who had a great game with some super saves.

Good luck to Greenwich in the FCIAC play-offs–That’s gonna be one heck of a tournament with high-quality teams.

    • ReLAX says:

Bonaventura is some player. He does it all. A throwback to the days when a middie ran up & down the field playing both O & D. He’s the heart of the Garnets..really stood out today. Great win. Just wished the refs would of stayed out of the game. I got there in the 2nd qtr & until the 4th the refs made very few calls. The Greenwich fans & coach began to get irate @ all the calls in the final qtr. Most went against them. I’m just reporting what I saw. Rye desrved the win, but the call on the coach for complaining about his players stick getting kicked away from him could of been avoided. Believe that lead to the 6 on 4 that Rye scored on. Still Greenwich had their chances. The final emo for rye helped them burn some crucial time in the last few mins of the game. Loved the way the game ended w/ the big save by Rye. It could of been a one goal difference w/o that save. Nice match-up for Sr Day!

  37. Jericho says:

    Bit of an upset:

    HHH East 9
    East Islip 7

  38. scott says:

heard #1 for Rye controlled the faceoffs in 2nd half and was a big factor in win

    • lax-for-life says:

#1 is freshman Chris Santangelo. Have to echo comments about exceptional game by Christian Bonaventura and goalie Gwynne Spencer.
      Rye scoring:
      Bonaventura 5
      O’Callaghan 2
      McReddie 2
      Barton 1

Road games for Sectionals have fun!!

      • Lax n stuff says:

That’s one of the more impressive wins by any team this season. Good job by John Jay. 16-5. Wow! Somers, the apparently soon to be #1 seed in B, lost to Iona Prep too.

        • laxforfun says:

think your stuff got twisted. It was early in the season.

          • Lax n stuff says:

I’m perfectly aware of when the game was. What’s your point? Somers just allowed 16 goals in a game very late in the season. A game is a game no matter when it’s played. Hellooooooo. Fact remains, John Jay beat a team Somers lost to by NINE goals. I guess that fact makes you a bit uneasy. It should!

          • Observer Lax says:

Well said. I’d say you have the RIGHT STUFF!

          • Old Rugger says:

Be very careful last I saw Somers beat JJ. Comparing games against same oponenets is very different than head on games which Somers can claim victory in round 1.
            A. Pac
            B Town
            C Bville

          • P&G says:

Old Rugger, shame on you…Bronxville is good – but would not compete with Jay, Somers, or Rye. When your signature win is by 1 goal vs. Fordham Prep, you can’t be no. 3 in the area.

          • slacrosse says:

            Bville?-Please

          • SWLAX says:

Try reading more carefully next time…Old Rugger is saying who he believes will win each class in section 1, not who the three top teams are. It is pretty clear.

          • slacrosse says:

            Correct SWLAX blow-my mistake

          • P&G says:

            Old Rugger,

SWLAX pointed out you were on classes and not rankings. Sorry – its sectionals time!

          • ReLAX says:

His point should be that Iona was a much better team earlier in the year when they beat Somers & Rye, both who I suspect were nowhere near the teams they are now. So Somers & Rye got much better as the year went on & Iona didn’t. That’s the point.

          • laxman says:

Either way Iona looked awful and the fact that Somers lost to them is hard to believe. And also JJ fans can be arguing that the loss to ytown shouldn’t really count since it was “early in the season” .. 1st game infact. So take it how you want.

          • laxforfun says:

Ok then lets not hear one more word about who is injured cause a game is a game no matter who is on the field when it is played. Hellooooooooooooo. Yes, the Somers/LP game does make me uneasy, but I will give the defense a break as I believe the jj game took a lot out of them. I mean holding jj to only 1 goal in the 2nd 1/2 was a great job – wouldn’t you agree.

          • laxman says:

Not really considering they did nothing different than the first half. JJ lost that game themselves. They probably had the ball for all of 5 minutes in the second half and most of those were turnovers. So, in fact the somers defense would actually be less tired due to never having to play defense in the half. And plus 2 days should be enough to rest, either way “being tired” is not a very good excuse.

  57. slacrosse says:

    how bout some D guys!!!!

    • WestLax says:

      Top 3 close “D” in section 1
      1. Collins – Rye – SUNY Binghamton
      2. Schur – Somers – John Hopkins
      3. Fahey – Yortown – SUNY Albany

      Top 3 LSM
      1. Ferguson – Mamaroneck – SUNY Brockport
      2. Dalton – Somers – ??
      3. Landis – Pelham – Notre Dame

      • LAX says:

Jack Lambert- JJ-UNC, should probably have him up there

        • jeffreyp says:

Jack Lambert is hands down number 1 LSM in section one. he has shut down everyone’s number 1 middie this year. the stats show it. He also has 7 points and is a ground ball machine.

          • P&G says:

Lambert is by far the no. 1 LSM. And he’s just a soph to boot.

          • Long Time laxer says:

I have heard lots of good things about Lambert. I haven’t seen him yet, but I don’t think anyone is hands-down best over ferguson. He clears the ball, faces off, easily 10+ ground balls a game, and it would be hard to imagine anyone has a better stick than he does.

          • P&G says:

Why is it hard to imagine. No offense to Ferguson, but Lambert started on JJ as a freshman, committed to UNC (had his pick of schools) before he played a game as a soph. He is an impact player on a team that plays a significantly harder schedule than mamo.

I have seen them both play, and Ferguson is a good HS player. Lambert is a special player.

          • slacrosse says:

Have you seen Landis play? Yeah he’s playing on Pelham but his talent would stand out on any team.

I have – and I was very impressed with his physical tools. I have not seen him this year to see if his stick has improved.

          • slacrosse says:

Yeah, as of last summer he still had room to develop/refine his lax skills and I haven’t seen him since. A special athlete (football, hockey as well) sure Notre Dame (and Hopkins) felt with 2 seasons + summers to go, he’ll get there.

Not sure if I’ve seen Lambert play but no doubt he’s a top player. Although only a soph, he does have the advantage of playing for a top team.

  58. Papa John says:

Iona prep is down. JJ will get the 4 seed

  59. Laxtime says:

16-16 2 minutes left. Donohue just tied it for Somers

  60. mrchooch says:

    16-16 227 left Somers to

Ot…………Somers misses cage on 1 on 1 with goalie

  62. mrchooch says:

    17-16 Somers cousin scores

  63. laxforfun says:

Hope Somers isn’t overly celebrating – not pretty and not one to be proud of. To blow that kind of lead and then not be able to get control. Sure Lew is going to make a few “adjustments” at practice

  64. Laxtime says:

Great game – 2nd time in 3 years Somers and LP go into OT with Somers winning both those games and last year’s game by two goals. Talk in the stands is that someone did the math and Somers will be the #1 seed in Class B since Town lost to St A’s.

  65. justlaxin says:

The way these seeds are done needs to be addressed.
Somers should be 2, Town 1, JJ 3 and Rye 4. Tappan Zee and Nyack will be involved jumping over Rye and JJ perhaps. Not a true testament of schedule strength, ability, etc. Pac will be 1 in A, followed by Suffern and LP. Arlington could sneak up and get a higher seed.

    • mrchooch says:

Anyone have white plains vs mamo or new rochelle dobbs scores?

    • the boy who cried wolf says:

I think you may be a bit off on the A seedings because I hear suffern is in line for the 1 and you are also leaving out New Rochelle who is in the mix. LP is closer to a 6 seed than a 3

  66. NYmike says:

As to seeds – strength of schedule is not a factor? Nor RPI? Does league play mean nothing? Apparently not.

  67. SirLaxalot says:

Who does everyone think should be Section 1 Coach of the Year? Tough choice this year. Horgan at Bronxville? McNally at Suffern? Haddelands at Mahopac?

  68. Lax Novice says:

Are we going to be subjected to the whiny nonsense of dozens of geniuses who want to revamp the seedings process every friggin’ year? Shut up, play who you are told to play, and win all your games. That’s what you can control.

    • Indian J says:

Mozart and Einstein were geniuses, we are just playing around on the computer. This year will be closer in terms of accuracy I think. There’s nothing anyone can do though you’re right.

      • lacrosse 25 says:

Problems started once the section committee took away the power league. Tappan Zee or Nyack was always a 1st or 2nd round game for teams like Yorktown, John Jay, and Somers and then you’d get your big match-up of Somers and Town or Jay and Town or Somers and Jay in the Finals. The Power League took strength of schedule into account. Unfortunately, it’s no longer around.

        • Lion says:

Mt. Vernon basketball fans never complain when they don’t get the nunber 1 basketball seed because of there national schedule.

Just play. The best team will win the section amd we won’ t remember next month who was in the semifinal games.

Also be thankful for the regioanl playoff game againat section 9. It don’t get any easier than that, the same teams that Nyack and TZ get accused of that soft schedule…

          • Lion says:

Power leqgues? Sure, can you imagine if Putnam Valley got higher seed than BH or Pleasentville, because they ae a power team.

The power league is to often one year behind what are really the power teams.

          • ReLAX says:

Please don’t mention the Knights & their fans in connection w/ lax unless it’s got to do w/ Yorktown because that is by far the only program w/ the history, talent, & legend to ever be mentioned in connection w/ the 9 time NYSPHSAA State Champion Knights! Their are two signs in the Knights’ upstairs locker room area for the kids to read, one outside the locker room says “tradition never graduates” the other outside the “signing room” states “Mt Vernon Basketball, where legends are made & imposters are exposed” which soon will be the case for all sect1 lax teams who don’t belong. You’re right we never complain about our seating, but we do like our home games. Great teams can beat you anywhere anytime. And in the Knights case we beat you on back to back days two weekends in a row to claim State & Federation Championships!!!

          • Lion says:

Fair enough if you want to equate the Knights of basketball with Town lax, or the NY Yankees for that matter.

But like the Yankees, you can’t always get a home game playoff. Sometimes the Minnesota Twins win their lousy division and the Yanks are only the wildcard.

Point is every team and fans prefer to play at home, but its not always set-up that the best team does. Record and winning conference or division have to count for something.

          • ReLAX says:

I completely understand your pt which is “put up & shut up”. I love the Knights & am very tight w/ the Program. That’s why I jumped all over your comment. I think they’ve got 28 section1 titles. Last yr they lost twice in the regular season to New Ro but third time was a charm in the Cty Ctr. And I’ve watched them play playoff games @ P’keepsie But w/ Ben Gordon you win. They’re a CLASS act. When you’re good you win on the road, so stop complainig.

  69. Laxtime says:

Well only one Section 1 team beat Yorktown and that was Pac. So maybe the Haddelands would be the best choice.

  70. KAboodle says:

    Coaches of the Year

    1. Pac
    2. Bville

    4. Somers

  72. LoVeLaX says:

who will get all section for class B??

  73. ReLAX says:

Coach of the Year goes to Lew/Somers look @ all the big wins he had NC,Rye,Pac,Carthage, CSH,JJ & L/P they lost by one to Ridgefield. It’s a no brainer. He didn’t take a team loaded w/ talent like bville & lose to Mamaroneck. And NOT play anyone except Fordham Prep. PAC did beat town, but Somers played a great schedule & had big wins. If town beat St Ants today Marr & Lew would be neck & neck…again because town took on all comers.

    • slacrosse says:

You may have it right there both with Somers and Bville!

Horgan is a good coach but IMHO you dont get ‘coach of the yr’ for taking a team with some D1 recruits/prospects and run through an schedule where not 1 top team anywhere in the region is played.

      • ReLAX says:

Somers in NO WAY is like bville in SOS again in sect 1 alone they BEAT Rye, Pac, L/P, JJ & now I’ll throw in Arlington. Their one loss to BIG DOG section talent is 10-6 to town. They had the one bad loss 1st game to Iona who was a better team in the beginning of the yr(Iona beat Rye early too) Somers goes on to play Nisky & beat Carthage beat NC, play Rfield to a one goal loss. Beat CSH, who the ville would love to have a win against!! So tell me how is Somers & Lew anything like the ville? Coach of the yr so far should go to someone who put together a nice DIVERSE resume. Lew scheduled much better teams & BEAT alot of them. Did Horgan do that?

        • SWLAX says:

I believe slacrosse was saying that you had it correct, on your view of Somers, as well as your view of Bronxville. But thank you, as always, for beating a dead horse and for the BVille bashing. What would a day on the blog be without it?!

          • laxforfun says:

I think the Bville bashing came from Bville coming on and saying how much better they were than other teams in the section. It was all the top teams in section 1’s fault because no one would play them because they were afraid to loose to Bville. In reality Bville has never been one of the top programs and because they are having a good year everyone should drop their better comp for Bville. So when you start the bashing expect not only for teams to defend themselves but bashing tofold. Let Bville have another strong year or two and they will be on the schedules of Town, Somers, Rye, Mahopac and JJ. But until they prove they are consistant they will have to go out of section like a lot of other teams do.

          • ReLAX says:

You’re absolutely right! Ck out SWLAX’s backhanded compliment to the Rye coaches below. Just another sign of arrogance. The Dooley’s build something, by eliminating the ville back to back maybe even more than that & swlax brings up anti-Dooleyisms. Your name isn’t in green so swlax can’t accuse me of commenting on my own comment. I’m sure there’s more bloggers who are tired of hearing about a how great the ville is w/o playing anyone!!

          • SWLAX says:

Arrogance? Back handed compliment? I was pointing out how misinformed some bloggers are on this site (those who were bad mouthing the Rye coaches at the beginning of the year). It was a sincere backing of the Rye coaches for the job that they’ve done. Enough already, move on and if you would, please stop the bashing.

    • SWLAX says:

How about the Dooley’s? Having a team start out 1-5 and now end up in all likelihood, 11-5, speaks volumes to the job they do in Rye. People on this blog were calling for their heads earlier in the year, so now it’s time to give credit where credit is due.

      • slacrosse says:

On a side-note while you know I’ve been hard on Bville with their SOS I wanted to stress again to you as a loyal Bville fan that I’m team neutral (except when rye plays) and try to be objective for my team, Rye. I would have absolutely jumped on the Bville band-wagon had they had some wins over top teams. I actually feel kind of sorry for the kids/parents as they should have had the chance to get the kudos from potential wins over top teams. If they win Class C which is quite probable I’ll be on their side for sure.

        Good luck in the play-offs.

      • lacrossegeek says:

The Dooley’s have done a great job in Rye. For the past 8 years, their teams have always been competitive.

      • Lax Games says:

Curious if you could cite when people were calling for their heads? The Rye bandwagon is officially full and now we are hearing too much chirping from parents which will lead everyone to root for their demise. Dooley’s are a classy bunch, focusing on team play and player development. Maybe they should coach Rye parents on how to be humble. Love to see Garnets do well for the Coaches and kids, scary to see the over the top response from the parents if it happens.

        • SWLAX says:

Everyone who knows, knows the great job the Dooley’s do/have done. This an anonymous blog where people were badmouthing the coaches after the slow start with an injury laden team. My comment was for the staff to be considered coaches of the year and nothing more. I apologize if my comments were misconstrued.

        • slacrosse says:

Trust me, SWLAX is correct. Dooley’s did take a shot early on about Rye’s start.

          • P&G says:

I remember it as well. Doesn’t appear there is an easy way to search.

          • slacrosse says:

Dont remember who made the comment(s) but its there if you look–I doubt it came from a Rye fan.

I haven’t looked at every word SWLAX has said in this latest thread but I dont ascribe a negative message. Just my opinion.

  74. […] lifted the Tuskers past Lakeland/Panas 17-16 in overtime on Saturday night after doing the same thing against John Jay 9-8 on Thursday […]

  75. slacrosse says:

    Somers/LP

Still surprised at the very high number of goals scored? Any particular comments on this from people who watched?

    • lacrosse 25 says:

Defenses had a tough night. Both teams really just exploited the opposing teams short sticks. Just 2 good very balanced offenses playing at the top of their games. And the fact that there were so many penalties creating man-up situations didn’t hurt either. Anytime there was a body check, a flag was thrown for an illegal body check or unnecessary roughness. I felt like I was watching indoor lacrosse.

  76. SWLAX says:

At a glance, if all teams that qualify for sectionals put it for it, there will be 18 teams in Class C. Does anyone know how that would work? Would the top 2 teams get bye’s?
