Senior goalie Alex Peyreigne and defending Connecticut Class S state champ Weston (9-3) take on a Staples team (10-3) that is also red-hot.

It was an emotional night at Somers long before the Tuskers pulled out a dramatic 9-8 win over John Jay in a rematch of the teams that have met in the last two  years in the the Section 1 Class B title game and three times in the last four years.

In pregame Senior Night ceremonies, Johns Hopkins University-bound senior defenseman Eddie Schurr of Somers was greeted by his parents. It so happens his father, Tim, is the head coach at John Jay.

In addition to Schurr and his younger brother, Kevin, a junior defenseman, the game had special meaning for the entire Somers team.

After all, last year, Somers fell to John Jay three times, including a 9-6 decision in the sectional final.

In their first meeting since then, Somers rallied from a 6-2 second-quarter deficit to pull out the win on a goal by junior attackman Kevin Cousin with 1:33 remaining off a feed from senior attackman Kieran Donohue, who had tied it at 8-8 on a goal moments earlier. Mike Lupinacci had given John Jay an 8-7 lead earlier in the period.

It was the latest comeback for a Somers team that rallied to beat New Canaan 15-11 after trailing 11-3 in the third quarter. In a preseason interview, Donohue had told me that Somers is “a very blue-collar team living in a white-collar world.”

“We’re hard working,” he added. “We’re like a family.”

Also in that interview, he prophetically cited Kevin Cousin as a player “you will definitely be hearing from.” You can check out that interview by clicking here.

There is quite a bit more coverage on yesterday’s John Jay-Somers game on MSG Varsity and msgvarsity.com. Also of note yesterday, Ridgefield pulled out a 12-9 win over Brien McMahon in a matchup of two of the FCIAC’s hottest teams. McMahon (10-3) had won five straight. Ridgefield (11-3) has won six of its last eight. In other action, Smithtown West pulled out a 6-5 win against Connetquot, West Islip beat East Islip 11-7 and Iona Prep outlasted Bergen Catholic 13-12.

  1. Old Rugger says:

Best game of the day looks to be Sayville Huntington
    Hunt 10 Sville 8

    Bville 14 Scdale 7
    Pelham 8 Easchester 7

  2. laxfan says:

Regarding the Scarsdale game it will be interesting to see when and how the goals get scored by Scarsdale, ie late in the game during garbage time or spread out and against the regular D. The Bronxville D has been vastly underrated and the reality is that for most of the season they have been playing with 2 and sometime 3 of the 6 starting defenders out for various reasons. The last 2 games they have had their regular starting D out for the first time since the first week of the season and the results have been very good. True, Eastchester cannot really be counted because the 1st string was intact only for the first few minutes of the game but a week ago when they played White Plains, that game was thought to be a real test and they ended up holding WP to 3 goals over the first 44 minutes of the game. I would say they are coming into the playoffs in very good shape.

  3. Old Rugger says:

Sounds like Bville are peaking and healthy at the right time. They will probably be the number 2 seed with 67 points to Pville probably no 1 at 68 pts. In C I think Bville has the horses. McCormick and Near are the real deal, saw them last year and in summer playing with Prime Time. Plus the scorer Gross. Haven’t heard much about the Bville poles. For my sleeper in C I’m taking Byram Hills most likely a 4 or 5 seed but srength of schedule makes them more battle tested than many in C. But as always hot goalkeepers and defence wins.

  4. laxfan says:

Excellent analysis as usual. Bronxville may have a shot at #1 seed. They do have 2 games left and I believe have a better SOS. Not sure how tiebreakers enter into the equation but against common opponents, Bronxville scored more and gave up fewer goals against PV than P-ville and defeated FL by 8 goals against whom P-ville lost. Speculation time is almost over though but I will take my chances with Bronxville’s 4 senior poles and 2 senior D middies. I think their coach is rounding them into peak shape at the right time so you have to give him some credit as well. The proof will be in the pudding as they say but I give Bronxville as much of a chance as anyone to win the section.

    • BH says:

It would be a travesty if P-ville was given the top seed with that schedule. i guess it could happen but really????? Bronxville as the #1 is the only thing that makes sense.

    • Lax Games says:

Pville D will give B problems. B- ville back line is not so strong but top line O talent will carry them in C

  5. scott says:

broncos are a lock to win C

    • laxfan says:

I would not call them a lock. I think Byram Hills, Pleasantville or Bronxville all have a shot and would not be hugely surprised to see any of those 3 win the section. The biggest surprise would be if one of those three did not win it.

  6. blax says:

    broncos win 19-2

  7. Jericho says:

Game of the day in LI… Huntington beats Sayville 8-7 in OT.

    Other finals:

    SWR 11, Hauppauge 5
    Set 14, Sewanhaka 3
    GC 17, Bellmore JFK 2

  8. laxfan says:

A big surprise for me has been the total collapse of Scarsdale. I did not expect them to threaten for the section this season but last season they seemed to really be going in the right direction and looked like a program on the rise and then boom they fall apart this season and end up doing very poorly. I wonder what happened there because they have a youth program and are a pretty large school.

  9. laxtime says:

everyone is all over bronxville, they play an extremely weak schedule… lets see them go up against l/p, jj, yorktown, somers, rye then say how good they are
