Dartmouth College-bound senior midfielder Jake Weil hopes to lead John Jay to its fourth straight win over rival Somers when the two-time Class B sectional finalists square off today at 6 p.m. at Somers.

Among the headlines from yesterday, Chaminade swept the regular-season series against CHSAA rival St. Anthony’s, winning 9-7. A likely Round 3 awaits the teams in the postseason.

Also of note, the upstart program at Islip got a breakthrough win as the Buccaneers beat Shoreham-Wading River 13-11; Rye continued its improved play, beating Horace Greeley 10-4; in Rockland, Suffern defeated Clarkstown South 7-3; and in Connecticut, Staples surged past previously undefeated Newtown 17-8, Greenwich got by St. Joseph-Trumbull 11-6 and Brunswick beat Avon Old Farms 12-7.

Today’s schedule is highlighted by a showdown between the last two Section 1 Class B champions, 2009 titlist Somers and last year’s champ, John Jay. The game, which will be played at 6 p.m. at Somers, could decide who will get the No. 4 seed (and a possible home game in the quarterfinals), with the loser of this game likely getting the fifth seed.

Last year, Somers fell to John Jay twice during the regular season and9-6 in the sectional final. Somers beat John Jay 14-9 in the 2009 sectional final after beating the Indians in the regular season. Somers is 10-4. John Jay is 9-5.

The John Jay-Somers was among the topics we discussed on our tristate lax segment on MSG Varsity’s “High School SportsDesk” on Tuesday. In case you missed it, you can catch it by clicking here.

Elsewhere, Dobbs Ferry and Irvington start what could be an intense rivalry for years to come in a game that’s a makeup. Also of note, North Salem hosts Clarkstown North in a contest that was postponed by weather/field conditions twice and Fox Lane continues its rugged week of games that has already included losses to Rye and Byram Hills, when it faces Lakeland/Panas.

Ridgefield, fresh off its first win in program history against Yorktown, takes on Brien McMahon (10-2), in a matchup of the No. 3 Tigers vs. No. 5 Senators in the latest New Haven Register weekly poll. You can check out that poll by clicking here.

In Long Island, West Islip and East Islip renew their rivalry in what could be an interesting game. The Lions are 14-0 and have won 35 straight. EI is 9-4 with a 15-6 win against Mahopac on its resume.

Also in Suffolk, Sachem North hosts Northport, Smithtown West is at Connetquot and Ward Melville takes on Walt Whitman.

  1. Big Easy says:

Can anyone shed some light on the recent Somers-Arlington Game- is the 9-8 score a testament to Arlington, a let-down by Somers or somewhere in between. Seems like a respectable performance by Arlington…

    • Capt Admiral says:

It was a pretty well played game. I think somers took the admirals lightly but soon realized they were in a game. Mental errors, costly turnovers and 6-7 missed quality shot opportunities in the end hurt arlington. Somers scored a late goal in the 2nd quarter to go into half up 6-4. Somers took control with and 8-5 and 9-6 leads. The admirals cut it to 9-7 with about 5 mins to go and made a late run scoring 2 goals in the last 1:30. Never had a chance to tie with last goal under 10 seconds. Somers no doubt the better team, but Arlington showed they can play with almost anyone on any given day if they play well. Somers did what they had to do to win the game. Don’t be mislead by yorktown and LP scores. They were their worst efforts of the year…

  2. POURPLE says:

Heres your light. Somers is OVERRATED!!!

  3. mikey ward says:

Joe what is your seeding in class B as of right now

    Lake/Panas-12
    Fox Lane -5

    Ridgefield- 12
    McMahon-7

    John Jay- 11
    Somers-8

    • Big Easy says:

Agree on ALL outcomes and scores are about what I’d think…well done! Bronxville is the 8 and NOT the 4…L/P, Rye and Somers would all beat them. Not sold on Mabus for AA, Yorktowns leading scorer is Gately…not saying he should be an AA candidate….just saying. Shuldt and Weil are the creme of the crop in Section 1 midfielders, although this kid Lombardo from Somers has had a hell of a season as well.

    • Doid23 says:

As much as I love what Bronxville has done this year, I don’t see them above LP, Rye, and Somers. Sure their record is better, but the quality of opponents is low. Again, not trying to minimize the success they’ve had, just one man’s opinion.

And maybe I’m slow, what does the citizen comment mean?

    • slacrosse says:

Bville has made it very hard on themselves in terms of rankings due to a very weak SOS (how did you get them to #4 if you’re “big” on SOS?).

      Town
      Pac
      Somers
      Jay
      Rye
      LP
      Suff
      Arlington
      Byram Hills
      Bville

      • ReLAX says:

Wow Slacrosse I’m lovin the ville more than you. Guess I’m not such a bville hater as I’m accused of. Bville’s @ full strength & Rollin after crushing Echester, but we know Echester’s no Salmon River. Why do you have suffern & Arlington ahead? Not sayin they shouldn’t be bye the way

        • slacrosse says:

          Strength of schedule.

With Bville you have to “guess” “how they’d do” vs teams with strong SOS cause they haven’t played any of them.

Suff and Arlington have played several of those teams with some very close scores (maybe one blow-out) so that combined with several very good players on Suff and Arlington, I go with them ahead of Bville.

      • ReLAX says:

        Town & Pac..could flip/flop arguments both ways
        JJ & Somers…will see today
Rye & L/P arguments both ways
        Suffern on SOS
        Bville
Arlington & BH arguments both ways

    • ReLAX says:

If you’re “big on strength of schedule” it doesn’t show in your poll. Move bville to 8. They have one win against Fordham Prep, which is middle of the road in CHSAA, when compared to St Ants & ‘nade. The Broncos have had a wonderful year so far. I’d put them at 8 & consider the loss to Mamaroneck anomaly. If they played Suffern or Arlington I’d know for sure they’re a better team. They will see BH in the playoffs & we’ll see how they stack-up. BH plays Rye today @ Rye, hopefully they can give the Garnets a game. They didn’t when they played rye @ armonk

    • ROLAX says:

You can see how week the division is if JJ is ranked 2. They are not the real deal that they once were

    • ryealum says:

Who from rye will receive all section and/or higher awards?

  5. Arlington Fan says:

    And Arlington is UNDERRATED!!!

  6. Westchester Lax says:

Bergen Catholic at Iona Prep today at 4:30

  7. Laxn says:

Somers needs to step up in a big spot after losing to JJ 3 times last year and after losing to Town the last 3 years.

  8. Old Rugger says:

    I too like that score
    JJ 11 Somers 8
    Arlington is underrated (Good Longpoles)
    Irv 9 DF 8
LP 8 FL 4 (Wider if longpoles don’t help a very good FL goaltender)
Rye 12 BH 6 (Rye offense hitting stride in time for playoffs)
    NS 9 CN 5
    KC 8 Haldane 7
    Croton H 9 Bcliff 6
    SW 11 Cquot 9

  9. LI Lax says:

WI at EI is going to be very interesting…perhaps the biggest overall rivalry in Suffolk, those EI kids would love to be the ones to end WI’s streak…and it is bound to end soon. Still, give me WI 10-8

SW 7-6…watch the Pannell v. Pellegrino matchup without Keenan out there

SN 16-13…neither of these defenses can stop the other’s offense, but SN’s offense is better.

WM 11-5- should be close for a while but WM pulls away

  10. LI Lax says:

    3-0 Sachem North mid first

  11. CardsLax says:

Congrats to Alex Marcus of Greenwich/Laxmagazine.com Northeast player of the week for his tremendous faceoff work vs FP:

Rye 0 BH 0 after 1stQtr Rye’s outplaying BH & finally scores 1:26 into the 2nd but BH is hangin tough so far 1-0 Rye & i
they score again 2-0 &9;15 left in half still on O w/ 8 mins left

  14. ReLAX says:

3-0 Rye BH finally puts some pressure on w/ 2 mins of O but Rye’s shot @ 2:30 left us saved TO BH w/ possesion they need a score b/4 halftime

  15. ReLAX says:

BH w/ emo goal. They needed it 55 seconds left they need the FO & get it 14 secs left get a weak shot 3-1 halftime

  16. scooter says:

    Pac 6-1 at half

  17. LI Lax says:

    3-1 WM after 1.

  18. ReLAX says:

BH on O. 1st 1:45 get one shot Rye scores w/ 9:04 left in 3rd 4-1 win FO & control the ball to the 8min mark get it back on O again all Rye 1st 6mins BH on O for 3mins get a couple shots none get past Last 2mins Rye on attack give it up BH w/ a shot min left EMO Rye fouls BH’s goalie w/ 1sec left. BH needs to score on this EMO

  19. ReLAX says:

They don’t Barton’s rifle I high. Rye on the attack for 1st 2mins & pick-ip goal on an unsettled situation on the doorstep 5-1 make it 6-1 wheels are off for BH, but they showed they can play today Rye’s been dominant for 1st 4mins of the 4th

    • laxfan says:

great updates; keep ’em comin’, but it sounds like BH has not been in this game at all and has been more struggling to keep their heads above water the entire game.

      • ReLAX says:

They were in the game for all of the 1st half. If they could of shot better they would of made it closer, but Rye dominated them for most if the 2nd half. BH played much better than they did when Rye beat them @ BH. BH showed they can play. Barton was head & shoulders above everyone on the field, but the BH goalie can play. A hot goalie in lax can make-up for alot. Rye’s hands will be full in the B playoffs. BH will have alot to deal w/ as well. I’ve seen bville play several teams & right now I give them the advantage over BH, but BH played a better schedule & something tells me they know they can play w/ the ville. Hopefully they’ll get there chance. Be an interesting match-up. Bville has alot of talent, but they’re untested vs top sect 1 teams.

        • lacrosse101 says:

Rye’s attack of Barton, Stern, and O’Callahan is arguably the best attach line in the section.

          Barton- 26 goals, 12 assists
          Stern- 25 goals, 13 assists
          O’Callahan- 20 goals, 6 assists

          • laxman says:

Dont know the stats for yorktown but Gately, Fusco and Mariano are more dangerous.

And for JJ lupinacci and morris alone combine for 101 points on attack which is the same as all 3 of those combined

          • lacrosse101 says:

Rye attack is better than jj attack

          • laxman says:

Okay, just going by statistics that 2 of their players have the same amount of points as the entire rye attack. And thats without Daniello.

        • postgame says:

Agree. Barton is real deal. BH D and especially goalie did a great job to shut Rye out in 1Q, 3 at half and 6 overall. When u can do that against Rye’s talent facing constant pressure you’ll win a lot of games in this Section. But, BH O could not penetrate Rye D today to even get off any meaningful shots. Credit tho to Rye’s D.

          • ReLAX says:

Your D & goalie are going to need to play as good if not better when & if you get to bville. They’re similar but their O mostly runs thru Near @ middie. McCormick @ middie has the rifle. BH will need to play strong LSM on them & play fast on close D vs a very quick attack. Rye gets you somewhat ready, but remember bville’s power is @ middie w/ Near shut him down if you can. Pressure McCormick & the attack & you’re in it.

          • SWLAX says:

Seriously, you’re giving a scouting report?! You’re either a coach that got fired or a disgruntled kid. Either way, grow up and move on.

          • ReLAX says:

Very true about ineffective O. In sect 1C BH will see less dominant D’s & should be OK. You néed to use your bigger Offensive kids more I remember a big middie maybe #33 & an attackman maybe #8 get those guys involved & do extra shooting drills. BH will be alright. Good Luck in the playoffs

        • slacrosse says:

          ReLax,

BH put up a strong effort today as they always do when they play Rye. They’ve always been a scrappy team with some talented players and have a chance to give Bville a run for their money.

Thanks for your running commentary and details on the game and I agree with some of them.

But I agree with “laxfan” above and respectfully disagree with your comment that: “They were in the game for all of the 1st half. If they could of shot better they would of made it closer”.

I don’t consider BH being “in the game” during the first half as Rye really dominated possession during the 1st and most of the second Q taking many more shots then BH. Had Rye’s shot selection been better I believe they would have had a good chance to score several more goals during their possessions.

          • no skin says:

FWIW, wasn’t there and have no rooting interest but objectively speaking, if you’re 0-0 at quarter and 3-1 at the half of ANY game, then it is fair to say you’re definitely “in it” no matter how you’re being dominated…lax games can turn on a dime and often do and a two goal lead is nothing. Plus, sometimes you gotta just credit a goalie/d not just say poor shot selction…anyway good W for Rye who seems to be rolling

          • ReLAX says:

Could not of said it better & I was there. At half I wondered if BH could keep it up. I got to the game near the end of the 1st & was pleasantly surprised that BH was up to the test. Rye outplayed them in the 2nd but BH hung in w/ the one goal. It was the 3-0 shutout in the 2nd half that finished BH off. They had chanced their shots weren’t good enough. They need extra shooting B/4 & after practice & they should be doing wrist curls to strengthen there shots. Hit the weights & shoot more to get ready for the playoffs BH. Nice bunch of kids & fans…good luck!

          • slacrosse says:

Sure have to accept your comment strictly from a score stand-point and yes sometimes games can turn on a dime.

It just didnt look or feel out there that there was much risk of it turning and at least on the Rye side fans were confident that Rye would eventually take charge. BH has a real good goalie in Larrebee but I feel that in the first Q particularly, he was not really tested because of Rye’s lackluster shots. Later in the game I think he did make some good saves as he’s capable of doing.

          • ReLAX says:

I appreciate your comments. You’re right that Rye dominated possesion throughout the game. I was there for 3qtrs. In the 1st half I got there @ 0-0. 2nd qtr Rye started dominating, BUT BH had opportunities & didn’t shoot well. Also Rye could have scored more BUT BH has a heck of a goalie. It was a solid win BUT BH played much better than the last time they met. Both BH & Rye are playing well. Good luck vs Greenwich. Sect1 needs a win vs FCIAC after the town Rfield debacle. This would be HUGE for the bragging rights that go on…on this blog. Of course there is no argument when it comes to LI being better than CT THEY ARE

          • slacrosse says:

And again I, like I’m sure others really appreciated the effort you made to report lots of color on the game. Like I said you made lots of good points and yeah Larrebee did make some real good saves. On one of the very latest rankings, I had BH ranked ahead of Bville based on their record and strength of schedule.

  20. scooter says:

    10-3 pac end of 3

  21. ReLAX says:

Barton shined all game. Very good atttackman. #8 played well @ middie both ends of the field. W/ 2mins left they pull Barton he was toying w/ em @ the end. Kids got game. Still 6-1 BH’s goalie comes out of the net & doubles the ball gor the last 2mins Love his determination. You can go a long way w/ a goalie like him 6-1 final

    • lax-for-life says:

      ReLax,

Thanks for recap of Rye-BH. How about Rye’s D holding BH to 1 goal and 6 in their combined two games? Nice comment on Barton (going to Connecticut College) and Bonaventura (Middlebury). McReddie (#42 1g, 1a) is Bates bound.

      • lacrosse101 says:

Does anyone know where Stern, (#3) from Rye, is looking to play college ball. He has a shot to really make a name for himself if he keeps up.

      • ReLAX says:

I’m surprised Barton is going to CC. Although, I’ve watched Rye play 4 games(Iona,Fox Ln, BH twice) I really started watching him today, eventhough he had 5goals vs FL I believe. Breaking down what I saw today 1)he extends a D w/ good mobility & better stickwork, 2)he’s a big kid w/ a great stick so he can be deadly in close 3) he’s got a rifle for a shot. Put those 3 together & it spells D1 prospect. Did he do the camps? Did he not get the notice? I know of another attackman going to a D1 school playing this weekend who didn’t impress as much when I watched him. He did play vs better comp & didn’t dominate like Barton when I watched him but BB’s got the goods!

        • Q says:

some kids prefer DIII for academic/other reasons even if they could go D1

        • Long Time Laxer says:

Always better to play in D3 then stand around and look pretty in D1. And while Barton is a nice player, please do not put him in the class of Jojo Marasco or Chris Bocklet. There is a big difference between a really good HS player and a D1 player

      • slacrosse says:

Have to compliment the continued outstanding play of Rye soph pole #21 Jack O’Neill. Once again he was great on ground balls, catches , passes, and stripping. If he continues at this pace he’s going to be one of the premiere poles in Section 1.

again, stern puts up some serious numbers.

      • Quakers says:

stern is best overall player on Rye, deserves best d-pole everytime

        • baltimorelax says:

Quakers- From what i know/seen, Barton far and away rye’s number 1 attackman, stern could get the #2 pole at most. I really dont know of any outstanding play by stern.

        • laxtime says:

there is no way you can place stern above #6 barton, their offense literally runs through him and he gets shots off at will, consistantly creating his own goals from 12 plus yards

          • ??? says:

isn’t it possible that teams use their best guys to cover bigger threats like BB and J O’C leaving Sterns an easier guy to beat??

          • laxtime says:

very true statement… also bonaventura at midfield, stern most likely draws the 3rd or 4th pole on a defensive

          • laxtime says:

  68. Elephant Man says:

Great job by Somers controlling possession and keeping their poise. Unselfish play all the way. Nice job boys

  69. CT Lax says:

Ridgefield is really on a roll. The Darien game should be a classic – FCIAC version of Somers/John Jay

    • laxr says:

McMahon is a solid team, but I don’t think a 12-9 win for Ridgefield is anything less than they should have expected. Darien has beaten all of the FCIAC’s top contenders by 7 goals (except for NC, who they beat by 6). I think Darien beats Ridgefield by 5, pulling away in the second half just as they did against NC.

      • Big Easy says:

Agree with your point, but given that Brien Mcmahon beat Wilton by 1 and Ridgefield lost to Wilton by 4 it is easy to see why people might assume Brien Mcmahon could win…

    • Big Easy says:

Assuming Ridgefied loses to Darien, how the heck would the seedings work for the FCIACS??? Darien is #1 and then?? It’s a nightmare from there….anyone know?

Assuming Ridgefield beats Darien, is it enough to lay claim to the #1 seed given Ridgefields losses to Greenwich and Wilton?

      Bueller, Bueller?

      • laxr says:

I would think that Darien would still get the #1 seed, because they would have one loss to FCIAC teams, Ridgefield would have two (not to mention that Darien won by wide margins, and Ridgefield didn’t play NC). I think that Ridgefield is deserving of the #2 seed even if they lose, but will they get it? I think that Greenwich and Ridgefield should get the 2 and 3 seeds in no particular order, but I think both would be happy with either because both would get to avoid Darien until the finals (Darien might want that too, because those are the only two CT teams to beat the Wave since 07, and NC and Wilton have beaten Darien a combined once since the state championship streak started). NC and Wilton with the 4 and 5 seeds (again, they could go in either order, and this is assuming NC beats McMahon), with McMahon, Staples, and Ludlowe closing it out.

      • Lax Novice says:

There’s a points method based on wins and losses to determine which eight teams qualify, but the actual seeding is done by the coaches at a meeting following the regular season. So they figure it out themselves. Not that seeding matters too much anyway, you still have to play most everybody and especially this year you can throw a blanket over teams 2-6.

Give Ridgefield this, they got the Darien team to set aside some homework, video game and NBA playoff watching time to go see them in person at McMahon tonight. I’m thinking that next Wednesday will be more like John Jay-Brewster than Jay-Somers, but then again it’s all about the playoffs anyway.

      • factcheck says:

I’m thinking no matter what Darien is #1. From there on everyone will want to position themselves on the other side of the bracket. Regardless, there should be some interesting match-ups and an exciting playoff.

  70. Old Rugger says:

Kennedy 8 Haldane 5, Ensures first winning season for Kennedy in a long time. (Granted they don’t play a schedule like Put Val) Congrats to the Savs!

  71. ROLAX says:

I keep telling you guys Jay doesn’t have it this year. I don’t want to hear anything thing about injuries! Must have been an inspiring speech at the half ’cause this another game in a string of them where JJ has the the lead only to see it shrink or disappear completely

    • Old Rugger says:

ROLAX I’m a believer now, just didn’t want to believe my eyes. Been following these JJ kids since they were young playing in CONNYs, I had a lot more hope that they would rise to the occasion, time and time again disapointing second half performances, they will probably draw Town in first round make their exit and then prepare for college(I hope I’m wrong). Can’t put my finger on what it is? All these soft things like heart and leadership come to mind as I know they have the ball skills, just can’t figure it out? Also seems other teams making better second half adjustments.
Just my 2 cents as they are a good bunch of kids.

      • Indian J says:

This class has not improved tremendously since 10th grade-and you have to do that.

There was a coaching change which was controversial (probably ridiculous) and with that you also had this tremendous hype that surrounded this class too. Things like that are obviously not good.

Then you have four guys get hurt at the start of the season.

Apparently, there have been some discipline issues too and I agree with Rugger that there is a lack of heart and leadership. Ground balls, clutch plays, smart shooting etc, etc. have been a problem all season. Being good kids is important, but you have to be good kids who go after ground balls and play the whole game like it’s your last. If you get fouled, let the ref call it, and if he doesn’t, beat them anyway. That’s what Jay was doing prior to all of this .

Playing or coaching that 1986 style doesn’t work any more and you have to change what you are doing sometimes- but that is really just semantics when it comes to effort, leadership, and heart.

A program like Jay is a better program than most and it would be a shame if it does not come back. No knock on anybody, but there have been four losses this year that either should have been wins or decidedly more competitive games- based just on those who are still healthy. A team that does not play their best the majority of the time is not a good team. This season is not over yet, but they will need to do something different if they are going to do anything in the post season. Must come from the community as a whole: Players, Coaches, Parents.

        • Jaybird says:

Let’s not overcomplicate things. If John Jay had Daniello and Jimmy Morris things would be very different, let alone Beck and Bennett.

No different than if you took Donohue and Lombardo away from Somers and they played a completely healthy John Jay team, which Somers is.

Injuries are not an excuse. They’re a reality.

Kudos to John Jay for playing through them and still being a position to beat win another sectional title. Hats off to Somers for pulling out a win in a well played game between two well coached and hard working teams.

          • P&G says:

Jaybird, you took the words out of my mouth.

Some kids on this team have developed and/or improved, some kids have not. No different than any other team.

Too much hype – sure…thanks to blogs and the like. Where would Yorktown be without Mabus and Schuldt, Rye without Briggs and Bonaventura.

John Jay is competing. No game day excuses, but if you want to say they are over-rated, I’d ask compared to what?

Funny, they lose a one goal game to a good team – and the sky is falling. If they won by one would it change anything? Would it suprise anyone if Jay made a run in the sectionals…I think not.

As far as coaching and adjustments, those that know – would not make such statements. John Jay is always prepared. Can’t execute for them.

          • Indian J says:

Just to clarify, I said this class has not improved “tremendously” not that no single player has not improved at all and that adjustments or no adjustments- those are semantics. Nothing can replace player execution. I do know. No team is always prepared.

I’ll be the bad guy or nutty poster, who is forgets to sugar coat. I mentioned the injuries and various other contributing factors. Some have not mentioned the second half deficits after leading. I’m a Jay fan no matter what and will always be.

          • Doid23 says:

I’m certainly not overreacting to a 1 goal loss, but rather to the pattern of bad 2nd half play. I have always been, and will remain, a staunch Jay supporter, through thick and thin.

As to injuries, of course that plays a role. It clearly not the same team without those players, and I for one don’t expect them to hang with the Manhasset’s of the world without those players.

But with the team that they do have on the field, they seem to have displayed a pattern of second half drop-off. So I’m not talking about falling short of pre-season expectations, but rather trying to figure out why this is happening.

          • SirLaxalot says:

When you have a lot of injuries to key starters it obviously affects depth and that means the team will feel those injuries more in the second half and latter part of the game.

          • ROLAX says:

Did you see them crumble at New Canaan in the 2nd half?

        • slacrosse says:

For sure Jay has to live with how they’ve performed with the players they’ve had.

But I’ve always felt it was huge shame for this team to have had SO many injuries to KEY players. Not saying waht the results would have been but the fact is that Jay was not able to put out the team that drew the pre-season raves from most people. Just saying a shame.

As “Poco” said below, “no excuses for injuries. Jay has the talent on the field to win these games”. But as an “outsider” observing Jay I do see it as a testament to the depth of Jay’s program that even with these injuries, the team still has enough good talent to be one of the top teams in Section 1 and remain a real threat to win Class B.

          • P&G says:

As always slacrosse – a fair and balanced opinion from you. Not in a FOX News kind of way, either 🙂

          • Old Rugger says:

Slax always a great observation. (and positive)Good luck to Rye they are peaking at right time.

        • Doid23 says:

          Old Rugger/ Indian J,

Good posts. I haven’t seen the team play this year, but obviously something is off with this team. Too bad, could have been a great year.

        • ROLAX says:

DANIELLO & MORRIS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!!! THE TEAM HAD FIRST HALF PLENTY OF TIMES ONLY TO SQUANDER THEM. DO THEY PLAY DEFENSE?

          • ROLAX says:

They owned they first half. someone needs to put their hands on their throat and squeeze. If I’m correct the JV team spoken about were 20-2 most tied JJ record for most shutouts without Daniello. He was on Varsity that year.

          • laxman says:

yes, its just when you lose 3 of your top 7 offensive players the depth kicks in and the 2nd half is a lot harder to play in.

    • Chapped says:

When you see the two team captains, Daniello and Morris, on the sidelines and you realize that they easily represent 125 points combined you gain a measure of respect for the team on the field. There are not a lot of teams in Section One looking forward to playing Jay in the playoffs.

  72. slacrosse says:

Looking forward to the Rye/Greenwich game on Saturday. Both teams are playing at a strong level at this point in the season.

From a location stand-point, other then Harrison, Greenwich is closer to Rye then all the other teams that Rye plays.

Also understand that some kids on both teams know one another having played together on the CT. Chargers.

Rye welcomes its neighbor and looks forward to a great game.

    • Big Easy says:

Agree…..those two teams are very well coached and play a nice brand of lacrosse….give Rye credit (however it happened) for playing Greenwich. Enjoy the game!

  73. slacrosse says:

Congrats to Somers on a great win!!

  74. Doid23 says:

Well, I asked the question and I got my answer: the first half only Jay team showed up

I guess I’ll say what I’ve been thinking for some time: when teams continually give up halftime leads, or are being outplayed in the second halfs of games, it’s usually a case of being out coached, as in, no halftime adjustments or changes

  75. Poco says:

JJ had so many second half turnovers yesterday and I mean careless, uncontested turnovers. I don’t want to hear about injuries anymore because they have the talent on the field to win these games. Somers just looked like they wanted it more yesterday. I was wondering when Jay was going to wake up but it never happened. Lambert had a good game, kid can play!

  76. Old Rugger says:

Lambert always has a good game, got to be one of the best sophomore defenders in the country. More speed than Bolander, same field vision and anticipation, great at intercepting the pass, knocking down the ball, GBs, not as much strength as Bo but we will see.

  77. LSM says:

Somers played harder in the second half. Lambert is a beast. Will be one of the best Poles ever in this area!zi

    • Indian J says:

      LSM,

Lambert is awesome and I hope he turns into Ric Beardlsey ( well, ok I hope he plays like Ric Beardsley) but that is a tall order. One of the best poles in the section ever ?

      Beardsley
      Kuczma
      Doerr
      Harrington
      Bocklet
      Bohlander

List goes on and on. Tall order.

  78. justlaxin says:

Bohlander is not one of top ever. He does not belong on that list. Great player (mean that) but not on that list.
Add Rob Smith – Somers, Steve Kisslinger – Lakeland, Darren Mahoney – Pac, Jason Foley – Town, Bill Ralph – Town…
    Good topic for discussion…..

    • Indian J says:

Smith is not on it either then. Bohlander more successful. Boniello and Armstrong ? Garcia ? Maybe.

    • sect1lax says:

cant forget ryan McClay. i mean he was a starting defensemen on the usa team so instead of him being best in section history also the world lol. bc he did play lsm for Pac too

  79. And says:

    Add
    Andy Seal
    Al Meola
    Ryan MCclay

  80. Old Rugger says:

Good topic and don’t disagree with any of it. Just used Bohlander as a reference (a very good 2 X AA) Also I’m comparing the HS sophomores and beside Bo, Bocklet and Doerr did not see them as sophmores in HS.

  81. BigBadBear says:

Haven’t seen all those great poles, but I did see Bohlander..damn, I thought he was pretty fearsome…and a shout out for my boy Al Meola, some have said the best LSM in the section

    • laxforfun says:

Best LSM….. #20 for Somers, Natt Dalton. Should be in AA discussions. He is a ground ball hog and awesome on the wing. Causes turn overs and isn’t afraid to get in and mix it up. Best defensive player on Somers. Awesome with a shorty too

      • slacrosse says:

Agree. Seen him play a few times. Very impressive

        • slacrosse says:

Just to clarify, agreeing that he should definitely be in AA discussions but no conclusion on whether he’s the best LSM.

      • sectone says:

I’ sorry but I was at the game last night, and Schurr is the best D player for Somers and it wasn’t even close. The other Schurr kid held Morris to zeor goals. Wasnt’ Dalton guarding Lupinacci who went 3 and 2?

I’m sure Dalton is a very good player but not AA material.

  82. jack says:

Town had quite a few monster poles in early 80s…most of u too young to know

  83. section1 says:

I think Connor Ferguson from mamaroneck should be an AA

  84. justlaxin says:

Was trying for top level of defensemen here….Many guys mentioned are excellent but not on that level of the top ten lets say…..
Beardsley Lakeland 4 time AA at Cuse National Champ
Kuczma Town Dman of year at Hop
Watson Town 2 time captain at Hop National Champ
Ryan McClay Pac USA Gold Medalist 2time
Billy Ralph Town 4time AA at Maryland I believe
Rob Doerr Town MLL Dman of Year AA at Hop
John Harrington Town 3 time NCAA champ AA at Princeton
Steve Kissilinger Lakeland Towson AA some say could have been best
    Jason Foley Town Loyola AA
Matt Bocklet John Jay AA at Hop MLL All Star

other level I see guys like
Rob Smith Somers Dman at Gtown and Del
Stephen McElduff Town AA at UNC
Ryder Bohlander John Jay 2 time AA Terp
Darren Mahoney Pac AA at UVA and captain
    Brad Garcia LP interesting

    • Indian J says:

In high school, Harrington was as good a anyone at taking the ball away. His Princeton career was very solid too.

  85. scott says:

Justin schhneidmann sp? 2time aa at cortland from JJ

    • P&G says:

What is crazy is that Bohlander, Schneidman and Crosset (another big strong kid having a very good D3 career) all played together at Jay.

Any other examples of 3 (or 4) top notch defenseman on one team? Have to think Yorktown had some great groups.

      • OT says:

It always has been absurd when this year’s team was compared to the ’07 team. 25 players from that team played in college – 19 played were still playing this year.
        including:
        Douglass – Yale’s leading goal scorer ’10, ’11
        Bocklett – UVA’s leading goal scorer ’10, ’11
        Stewart – William’s leading goal scorer ’11
        Stockel – Drexel leading midfield scorer ’10 – Captain/injury redshirt ’11
        Drew – Syracuse – National Champ ’09 – All Big East ’11
        Granelli – Salisbury – National Champ ’09 (Cortland) – All CAC ’11
        Santare – WNEC – All New England midfield (27G 10 A) ’11
Crossett – Endicot – All New England defense ’11
Sneidman – Cortland – Nat Champ ’09 – All American ’10 defense All SUNYAC ’11
Bohlander – Maryland – 2 plus year starter ACC Champ ’11
