Cold Spring Harbor, above, faces Friends Academy in a battle of two of Long Island’s top Class C teams today.

It’s rare, on a weekday no less, that all the games we have to spotlight start at 7 p.m.

But that’s the case today, folks.

Here’s why:

* Two of the top Class C teams on Long Island, Cold Spring Harbor and Friends Academy square off.

* Bronxville faces perhaps its biggest remaining test of the regular season when it plays Fordham Prep at Haindl Field in Eastchester.

* Fairfield Prep, fresh off a one-goal loss to a stacked Chaminade squad, faces defending Class L Connecticut state champ Cheshire, a team it lost to three times last year, including the state title game.

Also of note, at 6 p.m., Mahopac, which has a win over Yorktown to its credit, plays at John Jay.

Here’s a rundown of today’s schedule:

Deer Park at Bayport-Blue Point, 4 p.m.
Weston at Joel Barlow at Field J, 4 p.m.
Suffern at Clarkstown North, 4:15 p.m.
Ardsley at Saunders, 4:30 p.m.
Haldane at Hen Hud, 4:30 p.m.
Edgemont at Hastings, 4:30 p.m.
Irvington at New Rochelle, 4:30 p.m.
Harrison at Eastchester, 4:30 p.m.
Horace Greeley at North Salem, 4:30 p.m.
North Rockland at White Plains, 4:30 p.m.
Albertus Magnus at Peekskill at Torpy Field, 4 p.m.
Seaford at Locust Valley at Centre Island, 4:45 p.m.
Rye at Fox Lane, 5 p.m.
Lawrence at Hempstead at Lincoln Park, 5 p.m.
Arlington at Wappiners, 5 p.m.
Mahopac at John Jay, 6 p.m.
Bronxville vs. Fordham Prep at Haindl Field, Eastchester, 7 p.m.
Fairfield Prep at Cheshire, 7 p.m.
Friends Academy at Cold Spring Harbor, 7 p.m.
Danbury at Pomperaug, 7 p.m.
Hamden at Fairfield Warde, 7 p.m.

Now, a quick word about tomorrow. The two leading teams right now in Section 1 Class B, Somers and Yorktown, meet at 7 p.m. at Charlie Murphy Field in Yorktown Heights. The matchup is the subject of our latest poll question.

Who do you think will win the Class B confrontation?

  1. intheknow says:

FYI- Bronxville vs. Fordham Prep game will be held at Haindl Field in Eastchester.

  2. Old Rugger says:

    Fordham 10 Bville 8
Pac 9 JJ 8 (too many injuries)
    Farified Prep 11, Cheshire 7
NS 9 Greeley 8 (Upset of the day)
    Albertus Magnus 6 Peekskill 5
    Rye 8 FL 6
    CSH 9 Friends 7

    • laxerrr says:

      Greeley 18
      NS 2

greeleys entire starting squad (all 10 of them) was taken out mid way through the third quarter.

      • laxforfun says:

Really it is amazing when you finally win one you have to state the whole starting squad was taken out – have some more class since you have been on the other side quite a bit. It would have been more of a shame if Greeley didn’t win this one big.

        • slacrosse says:

Think what laxerrr may have been trying to communicate was that HG was not trying to run up the score by keeping their starters in. With an 18-2 score you wonder about that.

          • laxforfun says:

You can think that, but if that was the case, laxerrr would not have had to emphasize the fact that all 10 starters were pulled. Enough would have been to state starters pulled. But this is a typical post of a Greeley fan

          • NYmike says:

Once you go 10 goals up, laxpower discounts the rest of the score and game -wonder if the section does that as well – Pville blowing teams away with the schedule they have. The playoffs even things out after the first round.

  3. sec1lax says:

rye handles fox lane with ease, 12-4

  4. Lax says:

I say itll be a close game Rye 9-7

  5. Old Rugger says:

FL has a very solid goalie who I believe will keep it close

  6. LI Lax says:

Don’t expect either coach in CSH-Friends to give away much. This is almost certainly going to be the matchup at Hofstra in late May.

    7-1 JJ Half

  17. Li laxer says:

Pac almost lost to hen hud.

  18. Old Rugger says:

LI Laxer almost lost to Hen Hud because they have a FO guy that is very good, and then they beat Yorktown which is a very solid team. Just the most Parity I’ve seen in Section one ever.

  19. sec1 says:

    7-2 JJ 3:22 left in 3rd

  20. sec1 says:

    7-4 JJ end of 3

    JJ Score?

  29. slacrosse says:

    5-4 Rye over Fox Lane.

Good call “Old Rugger” bringing up the Fox lane goalie as someone who would keep it close–he did. + FL had some nice shots/goals from believe their #24. Also understand FL missing their top O kid.

I believe the scoring win margin for Rye would have been noticeably higher w/o him. Rye also didn’t help themselves in the 1st half by giving up the ball with numerous unforced passing errors in their O zone.

Stephens was lights out with at least 20 saves, some on very tough shots. Also he was very strong on clearing passes which made their transition work in many instances. Maybe some extra motivation vs the 3 Rye O kids that played with him on Empire team. Hey, that’s why he’s an Ohio State recruit.

  30. laxer says:

close d also did nicely for the foxes. holding number 6 and 14 for rye to 0 goals and 0 assists combined. the two combined for about 2 shots on goal, both coming from 14

    • slacrosse says:

      For sure

    • jake zybord says:

BUT. Rye’s #3 Greg Stern, the underrated third attackman for rye (the only junior starter) had three goals to carry the Garnets.

    • sec1lax says:

thats not true, 6 for rye got numerous looks at the cage and wasnt really stopped once one on one but his shooting looked very off and had some saves made on him, also a great shot for a goal that got called back for a phantom moving pick by number 3

  31. Doid23 says:

If not parity, then certainly inconsistency in Section 1. This will be a matter of who’s hot come sectionals.

  32. lax says:

    Fianal from Haindl Field:
    Bronxville-12
    Fordham Prep-11
Good game with numerous lead changes. Neither team ever led by more than 2 and Fordam had the ball for the last minute of the game and took a TO with 30 seconds but could not put one in. Fordham took 2 bad penalties when they would have been a man up because of a Bronxville penalty but their penalty for unsportsmanlike or something made it even up and that may well have cost them the game. Very even match and exciting to watch.

  33. Bronco Bob says:

Congratulations to Bronxville on a hard earned victory and for passing yet another big test. Well done, gentlemen!

    • slacrosse says:

      Yes congrats.

When you say “another” big test–what was the previous “big test”

      • SWLAX says:

I would say the other big test was to see how they bounced back from the loss on Friday.

        • SWLAX says:

Also of note, 8/11 of the Broncos games to date have been played on the road. May constitute a test as well, regardless of how most feel about their schedule.

          • F&MviaTP says:

This game was played in eastchester..bvlle is a village in the town of eastchester so although it’s listed as an away game it was way more a home game for the ville then Fordham Prep which is in the Bronx

          • blax says:

many of the fordham prep students are from towns like eastchester and tuckahoe. The game was a neutral site

          • F&MviaTP says:

I wouldn’t call it a road game as swlax infers

          • SWLAX says:

8/11 games have not been played at home, with 7 of them being away. Better?

        • slacrosse says:

Yes a bounce-back from that surprising loss was a good thing.

  34. sectone says:

Not trying to knock that hornets nest, but the ‘Pac crowd is awfully quiet tonight. I was at the game, both teams played very well at times, and poorly at times. Jay was exceptional in the first half, knocked Mahopac down. Credit to Mahopac for fighting back and making it a game. Still looking for Jay to put two good halves together – but this was progress.

    • F&MviaTP says:

Town, Somers, JJ, Pac,& L/P still the elite of sect.1 JJ proved today when yr in yr out you play the best you belong. I still remember that OT goal vs Huntington..congrats JJ. Those 5 teams deserve the respect. They’d have their way w/ the rest of the section

      • Lax Novice says:

When did Jay play Huntington? Was that a state playoff game?

        • Long Road says:

          Playing dumb, good strategy.

        • Indian J says:

Yes that was the defining win ( The type that we talk about when we keep “remembering the past”- to quote another poster)

Huntington had both Brattons and Howell and a 54 game winning streak. Jay beat them in OT in the 2007 State Class B semis. It was very exciting for our community.

        • F&MviaTP says:

YouTube it they’ve got the Rocky theme playing & show some big hits & of course they beat Rhamel & Shamel which makes it even sweeter. Yes it was for the whole ball of wax. That’s a victory you can hang your hat on!

    • D-Pac says:

Couldn’t have said it better myself, Sectone. Sloppy first quarter by both teams. Second quarter belonged to JJ outscoring Pac, I believe 5-0. Pac woke up too late and JJ did a great job holding them down. JJ goalie made some great saves, especially when it would have been 8-6, but he made a great save with a Pac guy right in front. After that JJ made it 9-5. Pac’s inability to clear because of JJ pressure, which led to several goals, was the big difference imo.

      • OT says:

        gotta ask

Jay seems to be having difficulty in the second half of games.

        Is there a conditioning issue?

        • Indian J says:

          Missing depth.

L/P was beaten in the second half and in some contests, there has not been a let down in the second half, but rather inconsistent play in chunks spread out throughout the entire game.

Having said this, their general trend has been one of improvement since their first game- which was not a good game.

Their lineup, I don’t think it has been the same even once this season. Maybe somebody who’s been to all the games can verify that ? Not sure.

          • sectone says:

Indian J – you are close.

The depth isn’t missing its right on the sidelines in the injured players. If Jimmy Morris and Daniello come back it would go along way in resting players like Walter and Weil along the way – making them fresher in the 2nd half of games.

If I’m not right on with the following point – I’m close…The only players to start every game this year are Brendan Morris, Mike Lupinacci, and Jack Lambert.

          • sectone says:

            forgot Alex Lanza!

          • Old Rugger says:

            Don’t forget Beck as well

          • sectone says:

Old Rugger, I think I worded my post poorly. Was trying to state the only ones that started everyone game as opposed to those that were out. I think its 4 players. You know stressing the positive 🙂

          • LoveTownLax says:

            Beck… not… coming …. back….
            2011 season…

‘Town is playing without Johnny Ranagan…. oh wait, he’s not coming back either……. :o)

  35. jake zybord says:

    Rye vs. Fox Lane.

Fox Lane did a great job keeping it close. But sleeper, Greg Stern, picked them apart. I believe he had 3 goals to carry the garnets. He is a young gun who has a bright future.

Please let me know if anyone knows where he is looking to play college lax.

  36. D-Pac says:

    As of today, thoughts?

    i. Town
    2. JJ
    3. LP
    4. Pac
    5. Somers
    6. Suffern
    7. Bronxville
    8. Fordham Prep
    9. Rye
    10.Pleasantville/Mamaroneck/Arlington

    • sectone says:

I will only (re)rank your top 5 as that is all that I have seen…

      1) Town
      2) JJ
      3) Somers
      4) Pac
      5) L/P

    • Indian J says:

      1. Town
      2. JJ
      3.Somers
      4.Pac
      5.L/P

And in four days we can switch it again.

      • Doid23 says:

Four days? How about 1. Somers-Town today.

Big dropoff after the Top 5.

        • slacrosse says:

Nah. I’ll just speak for Rye and say I don’t agree at all that there is close to a “big dropoff” between Rye the top 5. They certainly forfeited the right to be part of that group–but a “big dropoff”–no

    • Lax Games says:

      Should look like

Upper Section: (really no strong feelings about current order)
      1. Town
      2. Somers
      3. LP
      4. JJ
      5. Pac

Middle Section: (who else goes in there?)
      1. Pleasantville
      2. Fox Lane
      3. Byram Hills
      4.
      5.

      Lower Section:
      1. Rye
      2. Bronxville
      3. White Plains
      4. Mamo
      5. ?

      Rockland:
      1. Suffern
      2. No Rockland
      3. ?

      Privates:
      1. Fordham
      2. IP
      3. Hackley
      4. RCDS
      5. ?

      • Old Rugger says:

I would reorganize by class. Rye beat Fox lane so should be above them. Bronxville even with light schedule has to be favored in Class C. Lots of Parity, so on any given day anything can happen.

Class A (top 3 very interchangable)
        1. LP
        2. Pac
        3. Suffern
        4. Arlington
        5. Mamo??

Class B (top 3 very interchangable)
        1. Town
        2. Somers
        3. JJ
        4. Rye
        5. Fox Lane

        Class C
        1. Bronxville
        2. Pleasantville
        3. Byram Hills
        4. North Salem
        5. Put Valley

        private
        1. Brunswick
        2. Fordham
        3. Iona
        4. Hackley
        5. no idea

        • D-Pac says:

After tonight I would flip flop Somers and JJ, otherwise pretty accurate.

        • in the know says:

Brunswick? Really good CT team, however not a NY school.

          • F&MviaTP says:

Put RCDS on the list & Trinity Pawling, although T-P is 2-5 they have 3 one goal losses to Loomis, Westminster & NMH, lost by 4 to Deerfield & played Salisbury. They’re coming off a decisive win over Berkshire 13-8 & most likely won today vs another NY Prep Millbrook

          • F&MviaTP says:

T-P would rank above RCDS since T-P beat Canterbury 16-0 while RCDS lost 8-5 to Canterbury

        • Lion says:

For number 2 in Rockland you have North Rockland, which lost to both Nyack and Tappan Zee. I know earlier in the season but those 2 teams have held par with North Rockland on all common opponents.

Head-to-head is hard to refute. The number 2 slot will probably be decided ahen Nyack and TZ meet at the end of the season.

        • Lion says:

For no. 2 in Rockland, you have North Rockland which lost to both Nyack and Tappan Zee. I know NR is playing better, but you can’t refute head to head results, and similar outcomes against common opponents.

No. 2 should be TZ or Nyack, decided by next weeks game.

      • slacrosse says:

Let me see if I get this:

Rye thrashes BH, beats FL (but for a fantastic goalie, would have been at least a 5 goal margin), plays a SUBSTANTIALLY harder schedule then both with some very close losses to Upper Section teams–but can’t make your Middle Section????????Please

To be kind I’ll just say that is one of the most bizarre pieces of rankings I’ve ever seen.

        • Bobcat says:

slacrosse, you’ve got to take off the Garnet kneepads your Rye team is good but inconsistent. To throw up comparative scores is a useless exercise. BH beat FL by 5 goals so what? Does that make BH as good as or better than Rye? Probably not but get a grip.

          • slacrosse says:

What are you talking about??? You say I’m “throwing up comparative scores”?? Astonished by your incorrect mis-reading of my very clear and simple comment.

Let me try again. I think you’ll get this. I said Rye beat BH and then Rye beat FL so how could Rye be ranked below those two teams? Nothing was said or implied about BH beating FL!!!

Don’t bother coming back on this–I’m done with you on this.

        • slacrosse says:

          Lax Games,

As pointed out by “wait” below now I see you were ranking quality within geographic regions (upper, middle, lower).

Sorry I didn’t interpret your list correctly thinking your “upper, middle lower” were quality designations.

      • righthandman says:

JJ handled L/P easily so they should be ahead of them. Then Rye and Bronxville are both better than all 3 teams you have in your middle section

      • F&MviaTP says:

Need to put RCDS down @ 5 & add Trinity-Pawling to your list. T-P killed Canterbury 16-0 while RCDS had an 8-5 loss to Canterbury. T-P has 3 one goal losses to Loomis, Westminster & NMH had a four goal loss to Deerfield & played Salisbury. Hopefully, they put away Millbrook today because they have Avon(5/7), Choate (5/11) & Brunswick (5/16) all away w/ only Gunnery @ Home on 5/14 for their next 4 games and have to deal w/ Hotchkiss, Kent & Taft to finish out an extremely difficult schedule. WOW

    • F&MviaTP says:

I wouldn’t put bville ahead of rye

  37. slacrosse says:

    Top 5

    Town
    Somers
    Jay
    Pac
    LP

  38. laxing says:

i dont see how so many people can have rye so low in their rankings, yes yes they are 4-5 now but they lost early season games to very qaulity teams in jay, l/p, and somers, dissapointed that rye lost to iona and montgomery but they started off the season banged up also missing a key player. this team is now picking up some momentum, its unbelievable to see rye ranked behind teams like fox lane and byram hills who they have beaten

    • wait says:

it seems to me that the first attempt above at rankings that people find ridiculous was geography-based–which of course is silly since they don’t even correlate to the league’s geography…it looks like upper , middle and lower apply to westcheter location (lower is south not lower in quality–I am guessing), then rockland…i don’t think he means tiers of teams, which has gotten people needlessly crazy….anyone can post anything and then the rest all fight about it…LOL

      • slacrosse says:

Great observation about “Lax Games’s” list. Yes now I see he was ranking quality by geography regions!!

    • NYmike says:

Like Greeley last year – Rye has big physical kids looking beyond the regular season, but not sure the strategy will pay off. Like the NHL, don;t most teams get a shot at the playoffs anyway? And that BH – FL game was 0-0 at the half – won’t happen next time.

      • lax-for-life says:

Don’t think Rye is looking beyond the regular season. On the contrary, they are using highly competitive games against New Canaan and Greenwich as a tune-up for the playoffs.

        • slacrosse says:

Agree and are also focusing very intently on winning/playing well in each remaining League game + RCDS.

  39. Long Road says:

Just go visit Joe’s rankings on MSG Varsity. Joe sees more section one lacrosse then everyone on this blog combined. If his list isn’t accurate then no one’s is.

    • Laxin says:

Joe is more regional focus as in NY Tri-State – look at his Top 14 in region – no Section 1 teams. Hard to see every game when you are covering over 200 high schools over 3 states. Good for him – but not for us…

      • slacrosse says:

Rankings look pretty good to me except think Yorktown could make a case to squeeze in there at #14

        • Laxin says:

no problem with rankings of Tri-state teams – comment was related to insight on Sec 1 teams and his current focus on wider geo. Not a bad thing, just cannot provide the same coverage for Sec 1 as in the past. Is there a Sec 1 ranking he puts out?

          • Lax Guy says:

Yes there is a weekly section 1 ranking that is on MSG Vasity. Joe puts his list side by side with another guy I believe his name is Issac. Thet differ slightly from one another on a week to week basis. They also make some predictions on games coming up within that week, they do not do every game.

          • Laxin says:

            Thanks, will look for that
