Johns Hopkins-bound senior midfielder Tom Gordon and Garden City hope to beat rival Manhasset, the two-time defending Class C state champ, in the 120th edition of the Woodstick Classic today at 7 p.m. at Manhasset. The host Indians have moved up this season to Class B, where Garden City made the state finals last year.

Well gang, it’s been quite a week.

It started with a showdown of perennial state champs between Darien and Manhasset.

It included a goaltender scoring the winning goal — in overtime, no less — in a battle between two of the nation’s consensus top five teams, West Islip and Ward Melville.

And now, it’s time for the granddaddy of them all when it comes to HS lax.

We’re talking about the Woodstick Classic, the nation’s longest uninterrupted boys lax annual affair. This year’s Garden City-Manhasset game will be the 120th edition of a rivalry that started in 1935.

But there are plenty of other big games today, as we’ll soon see.

First, let’s look way ahead for a moment. In case you missed it, we posted the outline for the New York State Tournament, including some new info on sites for the various rounds.

Most noteworthy – the downstate semifinals will be held at White Plains High School, not Hofstra this year. The Section 1 semis, which had been at White Plains the last two years, will be played at Suffern Middle School. For the complete report, including tournament brackets for all three classes, click here.

Let’s start with one of our popular quick programming notes.

If you can’t make it out to Manhasset for Woodstick mania, be sure to check out the game live on MSG Varsity Channel 14 (Optimum). The Woodstick Classic should be just that – a classic.

Keep in mind, the other showdowns we’ve spotlighted this week – Darien/Manhasset and West Islip/Ward Melville, both resulted in one-goal affairs. Will the Woodstick Classic, with Manhasset’s 45-game win streak on the line, be as well? Stay tuned.

Also of note today, Yorktown will get Charlie Murphy Field warmed up for a busy stretch of big games.

The Huskers look for their fourth straight win vs. rival Chaminade today at 1 p.m. Then, on Tuesday, Yorktown hosts Somers in what could be a preview of the Section 1 Class B final in a game that will be broadcast on MSG Varsity. Finally, a week from today, it’s the annual Murphy Cup game vs. defending Section 1 Class A champ Lakeland/Panas.

In an interstate border battle, 2009 FCIAC champ Ridgefield hosts 2010 Section 1 Class B champ John Jay at 1 p.m. at Tiger Hollow Stadium.

Ward Melville hosts defending FCIAC champ Greenwich at 2 p.m., Wilton hosts St. Anthony’s at noon, Lawrenceville (N.J.) host Greenwich at 2:30 p.m., Niskayuna visits Greenwich at 3 p.m. and Rye visits New Fairfield at 7 p.m. in other interstate affairs.

In a big Section 1 clash, Mamaroneck, coming off a one-goal OT win against previously unbeaten Bronxville, hosts a Byram Hills team that saw a five-game win streak snapped by Rye in its last outing. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Though outside the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region, Summit looks to extend its national-best 57-game win streak when it takes on Delbarton in a New Jersey clash of the titans.

Before we run down today’s schedule, a quick note about last night. As we usually do, we received info and scores on nearly all of the big games on our “Gameday Friday” thread. But there is one game we received late info on I will update here. Ward Melville, which has had a busy week and returns to action today as noted, beat Connetquot 11-3. Tyler Hegarty and Jim Coughlan each had three goals for the Patriots. Goalie C.J. Ryan, Zach Zanone, James Cashin, Andrew Aicher and Sean Finnigan were defensive standouts.

As always, coaches or team representatives may send final stats from games each day to us at info@laxlessons.com.

    • Joe Lombardi says:

      Final: Darien 8, Nisky 4

Murphy, Maybell and Gregory scored goals in the final quarter for the Blue Wave, who led only 5-3 after three quarters.

  36. LAX VET says:

    To paraphrase Lax Dog:

I guess John Jay is not as good as they think they were!

    • Big Easy says:

C’mon now. Your issue is with the “John Jay Hype Machine”, which bothers me as well, not the players. Cut them a little slack…Ridgefield is a solid team…they beat Somers as well.

      • sectone says:

John Jay isn’t as good as they thought they would be. No apologies and it has nothing to do with hype. They have sustained significant injuries – and if I heard right they played yesterday and today without Weil. Add that to injuries to Daniello, Morris, Beck, Walter, Bennett and its easy to see why they are playing the way they are playing. And I agree with Lax Vet, Ridgfield is solid. If Jay gets healthy they will be a tough out in Section 1.

        • mikey ward says:

          Danny Caiola – 1 1 – – – – – – –
          Matt Ferentini – 1 1 – – – – – – –

          Shawn Smith 1 – 1 – – – – – – –
          Jake Weil 1 – 1 – – – –

          • Big Easy says:

Hold the phone…JJ scored 10 goals, not 7, they actually beat Ridgefield…incredible development….

          • Salem Shores says:

            Correct stats…

            JJ …

            B. Morris 3-0
            D. LoBosco 2-0
            Weil 1-0
            Smith 1-0
            Caviola 0-1
            Ferentini 0-1

            Ridge …

            Scott 5-1
            Buckanavage 2-0
            Hrvatin 1-2
            Scala 1-0

I think young Mikey Ward had too much chocolate today and is taking a nap now.

          • YEA says:

Mike lupinacci also got an assist, and Caiola got an assist not Caviola. Maybe you had too much chocolate as well?

          • Lax Novice says:

Thanks for the update. Great day for Aidan Scott.

          • YEA says:

The people that have the dash before the number are assists not goals. Incredible! It adds up to seven!

          • laxforfun says:

So are you saying that, for example Danny Caiola – 1 1 had 11 assists? If the dash is infront of the # and that equals assists and even if we only count assists for the first # after the dash JJ had 10 assists…now that is incredible, score 7 10 assists.

          • YEA says:

I’m not sure why he wrote it in such a bizarre way, but I would assume that some of those numbers are the total points for that individual.

        • mikey ward says:

Sean Riley, Ridgefields leading scorer, did not play today with an apparent shoulder or arm injury (sling)…he is a juniuor commit to UVM…

Jake Weil did play for JJ

          • laxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx says:

Weil only played in the second half, not sure why he didn’t play in the first. Daniello and Morris (team captains) did not play along with Beck, all of whom would be huge contributors. Injuries aside, Jay looked like the better team and just could not seem to put away Ridgefield in the second half, something that appears to be a problem for Jay throughout the entire year so far.

          • Big Easy says:

I, for one, am a huge fan of the “better team” argument, especially in a game where the “better team” loses by two goals and has a NINE to TWO penalty advantage…hilarious contribution…thanks so much…keep em coming please…

          • jeffreyp says:

Weil played second half only because of something school related, morris and daniello still out, don’t count them out though for the whole season though.

          • laxbro says:

Morris didn’t play but somehow he had 3 goals? Stat girls must like him.

          • LoveTownLax says:

brothers… Jimmy and Brendan. Jimmy hurt, Brendan not. However, isn’t one of the JJ players (Beck or J Morris?) out for the season? If so, the repeated blog disclaimers on him should cease if there is no hope for his return….

          • laxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx says:

And Credit to Ridgefield, they played a good game, and took good shots that always seemed to go in.

          • jeffreyp says:

Beck is out for the season, jimmy morris is not, that’s why i didn’t mention beck. and yes ridgefield played well in the second half. especially aidan scott. he’s a stud

          • LoveTownLax says:

gotcha jeffreyp, but laxxxxxxxxxxxx(etc) did, that’s why I was asking…. (I didn’t catch your last sentence yesterday, but thanks)

  37. slacrosse says:

Good comeback by Town but loss of most FO’s just gave powerful Nade too many chances to score.

  38. Joe Lombardi says:

    Darien 2-2-1-3 = 8

    Niskayuna 0-0-2-2 = 4

    Darien scoring:

    Case Matheis 2-1

    Bobby Weaver 2-0

    Graham Maybell 1-2

    Richard Gregory 1-0

    Ben Preston 1-0

    Tim Murphy 1-0

    Niskayuna scoring:

    Tanner MacIver 2-0

    Luke Goldstock 1-0

    Brian Schlanster 1-0

    Matt Sexton 0-1

    Darien goalie saves:

    Dylan Torey 15

    Nisky goalie saves:

    Evan Quinn 10

Records: Both teams are now 8-2

  39. mikey ward says:

Darien has lost 3 times. the Penn team, Manhasset, now nisky

    • laxr says:

Read that post again. Darien beat Nisky.

    • Ride the Wave says:

Mikey – Not sure about your reading skills. Darien beat Nisky 8-4 as the updates above state. Darien has two loses not three.

    • Lax Novice says:

About as good as his math skills, considering the stat breakdown with 3 more scores than the team managed as a whole. The SAT’s next Saturday, he better get to cramming soon.

  40. Traditions says:

Ryan Matthews scores just over a minute in to give Set a 1-0 lead.

  41. Traditions says:

    Kennedy for GC 1-1.

  42. Traditions says:

Matt Tompkins for Set with minute to go in 1st. 2-1 Set

  43. Traditions says:

Tompkins scores his 2nd to give Set a 3-2 lead early in the 2nd. Coleman had tied it for GC a minute in to the quarter.

  44. Joe Lombardi says:

    4-3 GC at half

  45. Joe Lombardi says:

Final: Rye 13, New Fairfield 6

    • Lax Novice says:

Big win on the road for the Garnets. 1st of six consecutive road games? Is the circus using your field? A good confidence builder in a wide-open Section 1 vs very overrated New Fairfield.

    • F&MviaTP says:

Speaking of NY vs CT..what was the St Ants Wilton final WM vs Greenwich?

      • Lax n stuff says:

St. A’s-Wilton final was 10-6 St. A’s. Sounds like a solid effort for Wilton.

        WM beat Greenwich 11-5.

        • slacrosse says:

Yeah a loss but against a national power like WM, sounds like a good effort by Greenwich. Though the margin would have been easily larger. Greenwich’s very tough sched could pay off big for them during play-offs.

  46. Copps Hill says:

9-4 Garden City? Really?? Wouldn’t have been surprised if they won a close game but this is definitely surprising. I guess my first question is how did Darien ever lose to Set? Or maybe a better question is how was Darien ever ranked #2 in the country??

    • laxr says:

It’s hard to compare scores. Just as Darien didn’t play their best against Set in the first half, Set didn’t play their best against GC in the second half. Doesn’t mean the outcomes would be different if the teams played differently, but scores are hard to compare. Look at PA: Conestoga beat St. Joe’s Prep by 3, and Lasalle beat Prep by a goal. Prep lost in OT to Haverford, and then Haverford beat Stoga 11-6, and Lasalle 13-7. And Darien is a very good team, but they were a bit over ranked at #2 (some key injuries have hurt them though).

    • F&MviaTP says:

Darien’s not bad, but they’re definitely NOT a #2 national team. If anyone is #2 fr the tri-state they’re fr LI. Set played better vs Darien, but that’s probably because GC would beat Darien too & would look good doing it. Haverford needs to play a LI power. National rankings are too subjective. Top 2-3 teams national are probably on LI

      • laxr says:

Read my post again. I said myself that they were over ranked. And yes, GC would most likely beat them (I didn’t say this in my post, but I think that the general point of my post implied this). My point was that Garden City is better than both Set and Darien, but that doesn’t mean that Manhasset’s performance was consistent. IMO they played with a lot more confidence and poise against Darien than GC, just as Darien played with more poise against St. A’s than Set.

    • Lax Novice says:

      May 18th you’ll find out.

      • Copps Hills says:

oh yes of course. Believe me we are all looking forward to beating Darien for the 3rd time in the last 3 games.

        • Lax Novice says:

Of course you are. Make sure everyone’s healthy beforehand. And keep the mouthguards where they belong. You saw what happened to the St. A’s guy who wasn’t wearing his.

  47. LI Guy says:

    Final… GC 10, Set 6 … Set’s 45 game win streak is history.

  48. sect1lax says:

    wow keep it up Pac!

    • observer says:

Way to go with that soft schedule is more like it. Have a feeling that schedule will come back to bite them come sectionals, especially with Lp being tested each week with a tough schedule.

      • Lax Guy says:

I guess East Islip, Northport, Yorktown, Somers dont count. Northport just lost to WI 11-8 after blowing a 6-2 halftime lead. I doesnt look like Shaker was to tough with the LP score and their record. Why no love for Pac ?

        • observer says:

They beat a below 500 Northport team, Yorktown without their best player, and lost to Somers. I’m just questioning playing Carmel, a bad Guilderland team, Wappingers, White Plains, etc. when other teams are playing Chaminade, Carthage, Greenwich, Ridgefield, Shen, etc.

          • Pac Lax says:

Lax guy is just some parent or coach of a team the Pac just beat. Prob Town…. Play no mind to him. The Pac will be fine. They played Carmel due to the fact that they are an Natural Rival. As for Guilderland, they beat Pac the last two years. Yes they are down this year but how could you tell going into the season. At least we play some tough LI comp in NP an EI unlike some other “POWERS”n this section..BVILLE

          • Pac Lax says:

I meant Observer on the above post. I agree with Lax Guy. Northport would be a top 5 team in Section 1. Lost to WI 11-9 and were up 8-2 in the second half. NP also lost by 1 goal to Conqt. And where is all the Mahopac Hype on this blog??? I can’t find any Mahopac poster who has hyped them. If any team is hyped on thiis blog it is JJCR (Many Injuries wll documented) and B-VIlle who has literaly played NO ONE. Pac will let their playing do the talking come sectionals. By the way who has Suffern played????

          • Lax Guy says:

So Mahopac was supposed to re-schedule the Yorktown game to wait for their best player to return.Injuries are part of the game, everyone has to deal with them. And how were they supposed to know Guilderland was going to be down this year.
Scrimmaged both New canaan and Rye and did very well against both. You are looking at a Northport team that if they played in section 1 would be in the top ten. As I already stated lost a close game to WI. Ask Somers about playing Pac and they will tell you they won the game on a one in a million shot with 2 seconds on the clock, after being down to Pac for the whole second half.

          • observer says:

Still doesn’t explain why they’re playing White Plains, Carmel, Wappingers, Greeley, etc. All I’m saying is, if this team doesn’t live up to all the hype at the end of the year, I think you have to take a long look at that schedule they put together.

          • Lax Guy says:

Who is creating hype?, no one from Pac has not claimed anything, not during the pre-season and not now. Tomorrow they play JJ so what is that another team on their weak schedule? Oh wait maybe they should re-schedule because JJ best player is hurt. They are playing Carmel because they are cross town rivals, just like LP and Town. Did town stop scheduling LP just because they beat them in the Murphy Cup almost every year. Im done, but when you find all the hype that has been created let me know where I can find it.

  49. HHH says:

I guess Mamo couldn’t stand their new found prosperity as they lost to BH last night ,after beating Bronxville the night before. One step forward, two steps back.

  50. Score says:

BH over Mamo –4-1 after 1Q, 5-1 H, 6-1 after 3Q. Mamo scored a few late EMO to close gap in 4th but BH had game won by then. Great atmosphere with new field under lights. Perhaps some let down for Mamo, but don’t think they looked flat…they had their guys and played well enough to win a lot of games, but give credit to BH on a very good performance. Mamo had plenty of shots, but BH defended well and BH goalie was really terrific. BH improves to 7-2.

Does this mean BH beats bville…the logic of the comparative score bloggers would say yes..they would have BH in a 6 goal better blow-out..but serious..what do you & HHH think?

      • HHH says:

no way jose does it mean that BH beats bville. BH would need to play close to error free lax to beat bville. It could be done but they need to play smarter.

BH needs to clean up their middie play and their clearing game, way too many turnovers-too many of the BH middies are holding onto the ball for too long and not passing to open teammates.Maybe their worrying about making bad passes. Pretty basic stuff but its been happening all year.

I think BH should send a thank you note to Bronxville. Mamo could not help but be a little worn out both physically and emotionally after just playing an extremely difficult game 24 hours earlier. Can’t forget these are still kids. Perhaps if things were reversed and Mamo had to play Bronxville after playing BH then Bronxville would have won also but you can’t figure things like that because a team just has to play it’s schedule and, no doubt, BH benefitted in this instance from playing a somewhat worn out Mamo unit.

  51. HHH says:

Mamo certainly had many shots , they weren’t good shots -they either were forced on the inside-or they were shots from 15 yards out and beyond. Not too tough to stop. The 2nd half BH tried to give the game back to Mamo by taking silly penalties and having countless turnovers. But Mamo couldn’t capitalize. Lost opportunity for Mamo, it would have been a great weekend for Mamo lax.

i personally think they were just tired and worn out after playing so hard the night before. BH had a 4 day rest where mamo only had a 24 hour rest. it makes a huge difference.

Congrats to BH. Was surprised at the outcome as I thought Mamo would win by a couple. Based fair amt on Mamo’s D which was very good vs Bville.

    no Shaker/LP game y’day… can’t find a score anywhere?

rye beats new fairfield 13-7, wouldve liked to see their defense hold new fairfield to less goals but ryes offense is starting to click, briggs barton with 3g, 3a and jack ocallagan with 4g

    • slacrosse says:

Yeah, keep the positive “mo” going.

O is playing better now with more confidence. Chapman’s return is key and could be wrong but think 8 goals for O’callaghan in last 2 games. Colgate bound “OC” starting to light it up again is a big + for Rye’s O. McReddie’s very solid play continues now on D as well as it had been on O. Gotta tighten up transition play where couple of lost possessions led to unsettled situations and scores.

Positive trend in play coming at right time. Want to continue winning League games in a dominant way and play tough vs New Cannan and Greenwich which would be great for Rye going into the play-offs.
