Mahopac visits Putnam County rival Brewster today at 4:30 p.m.

They’ll be talking about it for a long time to come.

The two teams that have met for the Suffolk Class A title the last six years, one of which — West Islip — has won four state titles during that span, going into overtime in a regular-season game in name only.

It quickly became the stuff of legends as Duke-bound senior goaltender Kyle Turri went from end to end to score the game winning goal as the Lions escaped from Ward Melville with a 7-6 win on what was quite a day for games.

You can read Newsday’s Bob Herzog’s story on the game and check out the video of the “the play” by clicking here. Also, be sure to catch “the play” on the Thursday premiere of MSG Varsity’s “High School SportsDesk,” co-hosted by the talented and hard-working duo of Jared Greenberg and Shawna Ryan, at 6 p.m. on Channel 14 (Optimum). The show reairs at 9 p.m.

As if that wasn’t enough — and my goodness, don’t you think it ought to be? — Darien battled back from early 3-0 and 5-2 deficits to win another overtime thriller, outlasting two-time defending New York CHSAA champion St. Anthony’s 9-8 on a goal by junior midfielder Tim Murphy off a feed from junior attackman Case Matheis, who had a hand in all but two of the Blue Waves’ goals with two goals and five assists.

And finally, in clash of two of the nation’s top prep school programs, Lawrenceville (N.J.) pulled out a 9-8 win at Brunswick on a goal with time winding down.

As we look to today’s schedule, we want to first note the possibility of weather factoring into the mix.

Anytime thunderstorms are in the forecast, it’s important to wave a cautionary flag. Scroll down to our daily set of links to check out today’s weather forecast.

Today’s action is highlighted by a key FCIAC showdown between Wilton, coming off a one-goal win over defending conference champ Greenwich, and 2009 FCIAC champ Ridegfield at 4:15 p.m. at Tiger Hollow Stadium in Ridgefield.

Greenwich is also in action as the Cardinals face defending Section 1 Class A titlist Lakeland/Panas at 7 p.m. at Panas High School.

  1. Tiger Paw says:

If K Christopher plays today . Put valley beats the overrated Lou and Somers.

    Valley-10
    Somers-9

  2. Lax Guy says:

Wow thats a pretty bold prediction. I however disagree, I think Somers wins it easily. 14-4

  3. GreenBear says:

That is bold…Even if he plays Somers wins 12-5

  4. Down State lax says:

    Lakeland game canceled

  5. LAX says:

Game of day Arlington at Wappingers?

  6. Joe Lombardi says:

Just got word from Ridgefield coach Roy Colsey that today’s game vs. Wilton has been postponed until next Thursday, May 5 at 6 p.m. at
Tiger Hollow Stadium at Ridgefield HS.

  7. Turf Toe says:

HG @ JJ, pac at Brewster, ppd, tba

  8. Joe Lombardi says:

    Staples-Weston also ppd. till tomorrow.

  9. WestLax says:

Rye vs. Fox ppd. no make up date

  10. sect1lax says:

wow Pac has some nice jerseys. their away jerseys are evven nicer, with bllue and yellow argyle sticker helmet designs with number, indian head, and they add the little hatchets for personal achievment. and have awsome gloves! its always nice for a team to look good…and be good

  11. slacrosse says:

Wow-that’s 2 League games canceled for Rye–gotta make em up sometime.

    • NYmike says:

They only had 6 of the supposed 8 league games on their schedule in the first place – now down to 4 with 2 to make up.

  12. Joe Lombardi says:

The Somers-Put Valley will now be played tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.

  13. Lax Novice says:

    The sun’s out here.

    • D-Pac says:

Don’t know why games on the turf were cancelled. Don’t they look at the weather updates? We need our lacrosse fix! Joe, can you update us inning by inning on the Mets game tonight with a lacrosse flair.

      • Lax Novice says:

It was actually nice to listen to the Met game on the radio on the ride home from LI last night, at least if you can tolerate Howie Rose. I like the sense of Met history Howie brings to the broadcast myself.

If they made the decision to cancel at 10am, to accomodate travel plans of other schools, e.g. then that’s fine. It was evident by 2pm that the worst elements of the storm front wouldn’t affect Westchester and Fairfield, but you just can’t wait until then. Better safe than sorry with the potential for thunderstorms.

      • slacrosse says:

If anyone can do, Joe can!

        • Joe Lombardi says:

Thanks, slacrosse. But the Mets might be difficult.

Lax Novice is quite right – schools have to make the call to cancel by 2 at the latest with buses scheduled, etc. I don’t know too many parts of the region that were being deluged by heavy rain at that point.

          • GreenBear says:

            Updates on the NFL draft?????

          • Lax Novice says:

Not only has no one been drafted from LI Lax’s Notre Dame, but Jimmy Clausen just lost his job to Cam Newton. At least the men’s lacrosse team is doing well.

  14. IslandLaxpert says:

Here are a couple of CHSAA scores guys!!! (drumroll …. )

    Fordham Prep 10, Kellenberg 7

    St. A’s 16, Stepinac 0

    Also…

    SWR 15, Miller Place 8

    Huntington 9, Westhampton 5

Sorry I don’t have any play by play for any of them lol

  15. slacrosse says:

    Joe,

Thx for any word you find out on make-up games.

  16. slacrosse says:

  17. laxerrr says:
