Connor Kelly and Fairfield Prep renew their rivalry with Chaminade today.

It’s the busiest day of the season, folks.

We’ve reached about the halfway point and schools have returned from break, and, after a day back of practice, they’re all playing today.

Well, almost all.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a varsity team from the nation’s No. 1 hotbed for lax, the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region, not in action today.

Even Manhasset.

The Indians, fresh off their huge 10-7 win over Darien last night, are right back at it today as they visit Plainedge.

All told, 70 — count ’em, 70 — games are on today’s slate.

OK, OK. So Ward Melville and West Islip aren’t in action today. Ditto Darien and St. Anthony’s. They’re all in action in much-awaited games tomorrow, of course.

Which reminds me. Don’t forget, gang, we are rotating our poll question, asking for your vote on who will win some of the big showdowns this week. For a rundown of those games, click here.

To vote, go to the right panel of this page. Then, just scroll past the “New Comments” and “Popular” tabs and click on “Poll,” and then cast your vote from the choices available, or write in your choice if it’s not listed.

As far as today, among the more interesting matchups:

* John Jay visits Lakeland/Panas in a meeting of defending Section 1 champions.

* Yorktown hosts defending Section 1 Class C champ Put Valley, coached by former Husker All-American Brian Kuczma.

* Chaminade and Fairfield Prep renew their rivalry.

* Weston, the defending state Class S champions, last lost to a Connecticut team on May 28 of last season when it fell to New Fairfield 4-3 in double OT. The Trojans have won nine straight vs. Connecticut-based teams. Today, they meet the Rebels meet for the first time since that game.

* Suffolk rivals Rocky Point and Huntington square off.

* Rye, eyeing a much-needed win, takes on red-hot Byram Hills.

Should be an interesting day.

If you’re a Connecticut lax fan, be sure to join us on a special link on the New Haven Register’s website, nhregister.com, at 7 p.m. I’ll be joining Dan Nowak of the Register sports staff for a live chat. You can access that chat by clicking here.

  1. F&MviaTP says:

One last observation about last night’s game @ Manhasset. Talk about hotbeds. What an environment to play lax. You put anyone GC,WI,WM or what I’d like to see Haverford or St Pauls in that stadium w/ those fans & the visitor comes out w/ a win…wow! That’s some home field advantage! Great place for a game. I give Darien credit for going. Advantage Set in the Woodstick

    • Lax Novice says:

Manhasset is one of the classiest places to play a road game that I’ve personally experienced. I liked the PA guy last night, I thought it was notable that when somebody scores a goal, he announces the name, but when a guy takes a penalty he gives the number only. I thought that is a nice touch.

Last night was the 3rd consecutive win for Manhasset in the annual get-together, although the first on its home field in a few years, Darien having won there in 2006 and 2008. The Indians won at DHS Stadium in 2007 qand 2009, along with last year’s 9-5 win at St. Anthony’s. Prior to last night the last home team to win was Darien in 2005, 9-7.

    • SayWhat says:

Its like the nouveau riche versus old money. Kind of sad really to read all this sparf about who’s ****s is bigger when both schools in question probably have bigger budgets than most D3 college teams. Just sayin…

  2. laxidasicle says:

summit @ chatham… 54 game win streak on the line… chatham’s 2 losses vs delbarton & fairfield prep… should be a good one!

    • laxidasicle says:

dang joe, didn’t even make your 425 game slate from above!

      • Joe Lombardi says:

It’s an incredible streak for sure, and thanks for the updates Laxidascile, keep it coming. The slate of games each day includes Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut. Today is the longest I can recall it ever being – 425 is not far off.

  3. Justafan says:

what does anyone know about prep this year? They play an odd early schedule and then seem to be a force in the states every year. Anybody have any info? Seems quiet this year inre prep. Do we need to see what happens today? How will they match up against the fciac boys this year. I really know nothing about them and am curious if they are going roll through ridgefield, greenwich in the states since darien is in different class. Thanks

    • laxbro says:

Heard he was out for the season.

      • just laxin says:

is this true? Joe, you have any information on this?

        • Joe Lombardi says:

Hamstring injuries can be slow to come around. That’s something I know from personal experience. I think it’s fair to say John Jay will be very cautious as far as contemplating Mike Daniello coming back this season. I’d say the chance are not good he will return. Sadly, the injury was sustained the very first day of practice.

          • WoW says:

It didnt help that some fan/adult yelled at him during the Manhasset game to use 2 hands on a ground ball after he dropped it 2 or 3 times while using 1 hand. He probably thought to himself “forget it: Why bother!

          • laxman says:

    • lax-for-life says:

      Rye 13- BH 5 Final

      • Quakers says:

Rye 13 Byram Hills 5. It was Rye’s game from the start, they won basically every face-off, which really didn’t allow Byram’s offense to get going. Rye’s shooting was spot-on, BH defense looked tired. Rye definitely needed this one after a 1-5 start and they definitely stepped up to the plate. Came out firing right away and never stopped. When BH O actually got possession they looked pretty good, just outworked on ground balls, maybe an 11 day lay-off from games gave them a little rust, but they’ll try and get back on track with Harrison. Big week for Rye to get back on track and win some games. If they keep playing like they did today, they’ll be ready come sectionals.

        • laxerrr says:

          Ha! What BH offense?
this was a much needed, deserved, and expected win for Rye. Byram Hills talked A LOT of trash about this game…
how many goals did Stern have?

Way to go Zack Reilly!! How many saves for the back up goalie?

  52. jay says:

    John Jay Wins 13-8

    • Indian J says:

Well, can we get an explanation of what happened and who played for Jay ? 13-8 over L/P is a solid win with any line up. Nice job by the Jay kids.

      • righthandman says:

It was a very good comeback for Jay as they played much better all around. Game started off a little slow and at half L/P was winning 6-5. Jay came ready to play in the 2nd half and by the end of the 3rd quarter it was 10-7. Back-ups were going in for both teams in the 4th quarter. Daniello did not play for Jay, so good to see them getting offense without him. B. Morris had a good day with 4 goals and a few assists. Branca started in goal for Jay and played very well.

  53. laxman says:

no wonder why the updates stopped coming from PV / LP Lax 🙂

    • PV /L/P LAX says:

13-5 Rye over Byram Hills. Good effort by Byram Hills but very lopsided.

Nice for Rye to get a W , have alot of O time, worked the ball well, and have a lot of different kids score. Best news is finally got back its missing senior starting middie.

  60. lax says:

Almost all of the L/P starters were pulled with about 11 minutes left in the game down 3 or 4 I think (Monte, Caffrey, Prunty, whole defense, etc). Looked like the coaching staff wasn’t particularly happy with the effort of the kids today.

  61. sec1 says:

  71. Lax Novice says:

any update on Wilton @ McMahon tonight?

  72. lax4life says:

Hen Hud loses to Pac 11-10 in OT. Hud came back from 4 down with 3 minutes left to tie it up. FO guy was absolutely dominant. Great goaltending and D too.

    • nylaxin says:

Wow..surprised that it was such a close contest. Maybe Pac overlooked the Sailors just a bit. Either way.. good job hanging on for the win.

      • lax4life says:

Pac was lucky to hang on. They totally lost their composure at the end blowing a 4 goal lead. HH had two chances to win. With 10 seconds left in the 4th, HH fast broke off the FO (again) and just missed a shot inches from the pipe. HH then won the FO in OT, dished a pass to the attack who was promptly mugged, but no call from the refs. Then Pac threw the ball away on the sideline but got it back on a questionable tip call. HH had 4 guys on their bench. Pac had 20. The Sailors should be proud. They proved they can hang with anyone in Section 1 (remember the opening 10-7 loss to LP in a game HH could have won).

        • laxing4ever says:

I would not say that the Sailors can hang with anyone in Section 1. Bronxville handled them 15-6 and only scored as the seconds were put in. and Ytown beat them 10-4 with 8-0 at halftime.

          • lax4life says:

Fair point. But then again HH has only 14 kids on the roster, that includes 4 sophs and 1 freshman. So I shall rephrase: when all 14 Sailors show up to play against the other 30 man rosters in section 1, they can hang with anyone.

          • D-Pac says:

Agree Lax4life. Very impressed with the Sailors. Good ball movement and I love the way they attack the goal. You definately have to show up to beat them.

          • SWLAX says:

B’Ville was up 11-2 at half. HH is twice as large enrollment wise, I wonder what the reason for having 14 kids on the team is? Is there just no interest?
Town was up 9-2 at half, not 8-0.
B/w the L/P game and now this game, the sailors have proved that they still have some fight left in them, and maybe it adds a little credibility to B’Ville for the manner in which they handled them. Just a little? Work with me people!

          • Pac Lax says:

SWLAX, So BVille must be the best team tnem in section 1 IYO. Should be able to handle Town, Pac, and LLP ,because Bville scored more against Hen Hud than they did. You can’t think that way. Bville fans have some inferiority complex!! There are always weird scores now a days.

          • SWLAX says:

Comparing like opponents is not a scientific way of comparing teams, but when teams don’t play head to head, unfotunately it is one of the only ways to compare them. It’s a far cry from asking for a little credibility for the manner in which B’Ville beat a like opponent of all of the teams, to claiming that they are better than all of those teams.

          • slacrosse says:

            AGREE WITH Pac Lax below.

The “comp” score thing might mean something if Bville played multiple games vs a few more top teams–but just vs HH means very little.

As I’ve said before, I believe Bville is one of the top teams but that’s just a “gut” feeling. It can’t be proved due to your sched. Forget WEschester. Still cant believe your coach could not find at least 1 or more games vs known top teams out of LI, CT, NJ, NYS–come on!!!

I’d get off your “see how good Bville is bandwagon” if I were you. As they say, “that dog don’t hunt”. Win Class C, get to Hofstra AND MAKE WAVES-EASY WAY FOR CREDIBILITY, EXPOSURE and scheduling games next season.

          • SWLAX says:

I’ll just let their play speak for itself from here on out.

          • slacrosse says:

            SWlax

Hey, maybe a Rye/Bville scrimmage before playoffs?–even a half field would be good for both teams. No comments in Laxlessons post scrimmage respecting its only a scrimmage.

            Maybe it’ll happen

  73. Hondo says:

Balance scoring for the Tuskers of Lincolndale. WHOS NEXT?????

  74. Lax n stuff says:

All the best to Mike Daniello. I was disheartened to read here last week he was likely out for the year. Now that it looks like he won’t be back just wanted to congratulate him on a tremendous HS career, if indeed he has played his final game.

  75. slacrosse says:

Congrats to Somers on their win and to Hen Hud for coming back and taking it to OT! Gotta take the Sailors seriously come play-off time.

Also would like to see their face-off kid in action. Keeps getting rave reviews!

    • Lax Guy says:

Face off guy is the real deal, you have to give Hen Hud credit they came to play. Hopefully Pac learned a valuable lesson, took the foot off the gas with a 4 goal lead with three minutes to play.

      • Pac Lax says:

Lax Guy. Agreed. I was at the game and Hen Huds face off kid is the real deal. Def best in the section IMO. Dominated Monte from LLP and now Pac’s Evans who is pretty good also. Pac could not win a faceoff the last 2 min of the game and it almost cost them. Pac D look like they were on vacation the last 3 min of the game….Spring break is over boys, lets gooooo. Way to hang on for the W.

    • slacrosse says:

      Sorry-meant Pac, not Somers.

    • D-Pac says:

Hud’s faceoff guy was an alternate on Empires. He is fantastic and only a soph. They should have won the game. He won the faceoff with 11 seconds and came straight down the middle. Shot went wide and they still almost scored from behind the net with 4 seconds left. Pac’s D was a no show and they didn’t finish the way they should if they want to go far in the playoffs. Hud kept attacking the goal, while Pac got lax and just passed it around without going for the kill. Hud showed a lot of heart and almost pulled it off with only 15 players. Town and Somers did what they had to do and Pac didn’t. Hopefully this is a wake-up call for them. Certainly didn’t play with the constant energy like they did against Town.

  76. Long Road says:

wow balanced scoring vs. Brewster, impressive. Next up is PV where Somers will more than likely again have balanced scoring, then Yorktown where the scoring won’t be so balanced, guaranteed.

  77. Old Rugger says:

Saw the FO kid from Hen Hud and he is very good!. Does anyone know his name? Very solid his % has to be exceptional. Hen Hud does well in the break off a quickly won face off. In straight 6 vs 6 settled situations they are not as strong at all, but with a guy like that they can hurt you.

Congrats To Mike D great carrer sorry you couldn’t finish it like you wanted. Has Shurr started to right the ship?

    • Doid23 says:

Sad to hear that Mike D. is out for the season. Forget about the impact on the lax team, just tough to work all those years for your senior season and to have it not work out. Luckily, he will get to play in college.

At to Jay, I guess they’ve righted the ship for now. It seems to go in spurts. Great first half vs. NC, bust in the second. I’ll give the kids the benefit of the doubt, that they are trying to deal with a lot of inconsistency due to injuries (both in performance and chemistry). But without Mike D. and the other injured players, I’ve reset my expectations for the team, I think a trip to the Section final would be a good accomplishment, and winning it would be an upset.

With Ridgefield and Pac on the horizon, we’ll find out soon if this team has turned the corner. For now, enjoy the win vs. LP.

  78. newshound says:

Hen hud soph crew: face-off man is matt ledwin and he’s got to be in any conversation about the best fogo in the section. An estimate: won about 20 out of 24 vs Pac. Another soph, Kevin McDermott, also came up big as did defenseman Joe Fraietta.

    • laxfan says:

Did see him get eaten up by the FOGO junior Andrew Walsh from Bronxville which was one of the big reasons HH got blown out in that game. They never had possession.

      • lax4life says:

MaxPreps box score says Ledwin won 10 of 16 FOs vs Walsh, and 12 of 19 overall. So who ate who up? Hud’s attack was struggling against Bronxville and Charlie McCormick played outstanding with 5 goals. That’s why Hud lost that one.

        • newshound says:

lax4life is right. Ledwin had a tough first quarter but dominated the rest of the way v bronxville. even then, it’s a stretch to say he was “eaten up.” HH just didn’t have it that day, to say the least, and Bronxville was great.

        • laxfan says:

HH definitely had a bad game that day. Not saying they would win if they played again because they probably would not but I think it would be a closer and better game. Weird game because HH looked bewildered most of the time like they could not start the engine. They were not taking any quality shots and, yes, that could have been because of the defense but they also could not clear the ball, had a lot of turnovers and generally played a sloppy game that day but hey, this is HS and stuff like that happens occasionally.

          • SWLAX says:

If a team wins and plays a bad game, it’s ok to point out what went wrong, from a blogging standpoint. Whenever a team has a bad game and loses, it always comes across as an excuse for the loss. Teams do have bad games, no doubt, but sometimes they have bad games because the other team outplays them and makes them look bad. HH looked bewildered because they got down 7-2 after 1, 11-2 af half. The Hen Hud face-off guy did very well, and even scored a goal for them, he is very good. Either he, or Trapp from WP have been the best that B’Ville has faced this year, otherwise Walsh has controlled the x.

  79. Hop says:

That would make him the only fogo in the section.
None of the big guns in sec 1 have just a fogo.

  80. fansrfirst says:

donohue looks like hes having a monster season for somers, him and barton from rye have both become elite attackman feeding and scoring

    • lax-for-life says:

Totally agree… and both Empire players

      • sec1lax says:

caffrey from L/P complemented both players very well at empires, barton being the strongest dodger of the 3 with his size, speed, and shot, donohue a very fluid righty finisher with a good shot, and caffrey a slippery dodger and excelent feeder… the three worked very well together

  81. Old Rugger says:

Ledwin is more than a FOGO, especially on a team with 15 or so players. While most of the top teams don’t have a FOGO they do have a player that takes most of their face offs. Who are the better ones in sect 1?
