Most schools are on break this week, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of games.

And some big ones.

One team that has a couple of big tests is Yorktown. The Huskers, coming off a 12-11 OT loss to Mahopac, face six-time Connecticut state champ Darien on Wednesday before hosting Suffolk Class A heavyweight Smithtown West on Saturday.

Today, there is a mixed bag of games at various times during the day, including an interesting interstate game between Montgomery (N.J.) and Rye.

Cardinal Hayes, in the midst of its first season of CHSAA competition, visits New Rochelle at 4:15 p.m. in a scrimmage that is emblematic of the growth of the sport.

New Ro, of course, is one of Section 1’s premier athletic programs, due in large part to its football, boys basketball and hockey programs. Can lax be next? Well, the Huguenots are off to a 7-1 start, including five straight wins.

New Ro’s rise has been sparked by a large senior class. One of them, midfielder Andrew Billups, is headed to Division III power Cortland State.  Billups, an adept long-distance shooter with either hand, scored seven goals in a 14-7 win over Ardsley.

Attack/midfielder Joey Lopopolo, is considering C.W. Post, Catholic, Utica and New England College while classmate Daniel Lombroso, an attackman and three-year starter, is bound for McGill and lock-down, athletic and agile defenseman Willie Rutherford has narrowed his choices to C.W. Post and St. Joseph’s.

Another player worth watching is junior attackman Matt Junious, who may be New Ro’s best all-around athlete.

Speaking of athletes, 6-3 junior Johnathan Stokes, a defenseman, is being recruited by several college programs at various levels.

In other action today, West Islip is hoping to continue the momentum it gained last week in back-to-back wins over nationally ranked Sachem North and Chaminade. The Lions play at Smithtown East at 3:30 p.m.

The Bulls are 4-3, but all of those losses have been to top-notch teams in Ward Melville, Sachem North and Connetquot. The wins have been over Rocky Point, Miller Place, Commack and Half Hollow Hills East.

Here’s a rundown of what’s on tap for today:

    Montgomery (NJ) at Rye (11AM)

  2. slacrosse says:

Great to see New Ro continue to build its program and win games.

    Keep up the good work.

  3. slacrosse says:

Another cross-country challenge from a strong CA team (Foothill) vs Long Beach and Farmingdale.

  4. sec1 says:

    Rye 1 Montgomery 4 6:53 left in 2nd

  5. sec1 says:

5-1 Montgomery over Rye half time

  6. LI Lax says:

Huntington out to a surprising 7-3 lead over CSH with 9 minutes remaining in the third.

  7. ??? says:

Tappan Zee beats Sleppy Hollow 12 to 7. Sleepy scored 3 late.

  8. slacrosse says:

Montgomery 9-5 over Rye inc. an unnecessary empty net goal with seconds remaining. Credit to M–they are a pretty good team.

Nothing to say except clear that Rye could not call back much, if any, of the good play/spark they showed vs LP on Saturday. Maybe 3rd game in 4 days took its toll? Whatever. Didn’t perform well.

    • tblax says:

That is a bad loss for Rye. Montgomery is rebuilding this year and are nothing like they were in previous years. For a team that was supposed to be very strong this year, it seems like they are very overrated.

    • laxin says:

Rye looked slow on D – especially on slides. Montgomery scored most from up top with some nice speed down the alley.

Bad shot choices by Rye – maybe frustrated – when they shared the ball – found great looks – when they put their head down to dodge – Mont. packed it in and prevented penetration.

    • SWLAX says:

What is up with Rye, still injured? L

    • laxfan says:

I would say that’s even worse news for Hen Hud who have a chance to go a 7 game losing streak

    • SWLAX says:

They have Wappingers and Haldane in there, so not 7 straight, but for sure it will be tough to get more than two wins from here on out for HH.

      • laxfan says:

When does HH play Wappingers and Haldane? According to MaxPreps they are on a 3 game slide now with losses to L/P, Y-town and B-ville. They now play Montgomery who will probably beat them after seeing what they did to Rye followed by Mahopac, PV, Somers, FP and JJ. I, for one do not see them winning any of those games and they could, in fact, get blown out in all of them so it could be a dismal rest of the way for the Sailors.

  9. LI Lax says:

FINAL: WM 11, Bay Shore 3

It was 5-3 at half before the Patriots pulled away.

  10. CA Coach Lax says:

Any score update on the WI vs SE game?

  11. LI Lax says:

    Actually 12-5 WM final

    • Joe Lombardi says:

Just got word that Tyler Hagerty had five goals for WM. Will Mazzone scored three times. Sean Cleary had three assists.

  12. Lax Dad says:

Any West Islip score to report?

  13. Joe Lombardi says:

Minisink Valley picks up a big win for Section 9, winning 4-2 today at Clarkstown South. A goal by Drew Hanson with 6:23 left in the fourth quarter snapped a 2-2 tie. Both goalies played well, Anthony Asala for MV and junior Kris Alleyne for CS.

    • upstate says:

Good for Minisink. They have a pretty solid youth organization brewing over there. nice to see it paying off for them.

  14. LI Guy says:

How bout this – Lindenhurst 10, Connetquot 8… I kid you not!

  15. Big Easy says:

Monroe-Woodbury beats Ossining 9-8 in Triple OT…another big win for Section 9 Joe…M-W’s first win against a Section 1 team! Way to go Crusaders!

  16. LI Lax says:

    WI 10 Smithtown East 2

  17. laxidasicle says:

summit keeps on rolling… 13-4 over west morris… 53 straight and counting

  18. Laxidazical says:

    Pelham defeats Haldane, 6-3

    Martin 2 goals, 2 assists
    Buckley 2 goals
    Szendiuch 2 goals
    Lambdin 2 assists
    Shea 1 assist
    Landis 1 assist

  19. slacrosse says:
