The Darien Blue Wave are stacked with talent at all the field positions.
But they entered the season with an unproven commodity in goal.
Dylan Torey, a senior first-year starter, has answered the call. In the Blue Wave’s big 13-6 win over Greenwich on Saturday, he made 10 saves, including a key stop early in the second quarter with the score tied at 2-2 that help trigger a Darien run.
The Quinnipiac-bound Torey has come out of the shadows to make an instant impact for the Blue Wave, who take on Haverford (Pa.) on Saturday in a matchup of the nation’s top two ranked teams.

What has it been like for you coming up as a goaltender at Darien having learned from some good players who played before you?
It’s been a great honor to learn from my three predecessors: Chris Madalon, Jameson Love and Andrew West. In addition, I have had great coaching from Coach Brameier, Coach Shea, Coach Lutz and Coach Meyers.
Darien has a long tradition of developing Division I goalies. Growing up in Darien as a goalie, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from a long line of All-American goalies, and have also been privileged to play in highly competitive leagues.
All my predecessors have different styles of goaltending, and I have been able to develop my own style by picking up on their best qualities. My coaches have decades of experience in high school lacrosse, and I have benefited greatly from their vast knowledge of the game.
Your team has a lot of returning players at key spots, but you are a first-year starter at one of the most important positions on the field. Do you feel you have something to prove at all?
Although this is my first year starting, I’ve been playing since middle school with my entire defense. We are all neighbors, classmates, teammates and best friends.
In a small town like Darien, there are no secrets, and therefore, the team and coaches are all aware of my abilities as a leader and a player. In addition, playing throughout the summer on the Connecticut Chargers prepared me for the best competition in the country.
On the Connecticut Chargers, I have spent many summers playing up and down the East Coast against top teams like the Long Island Sting, the Crabs, and the Bulldogs.
As a starting goalie in Darien, there are always big shoes to fill, but the confidence I’ve built from playing in my youth league, summer league, and high school experience developed the skills and the knowledge to play the part well.
How would you describe your style of play and your strengths as a goalie?
I’m a good stopper, great clearer, and provide sound leadership. Some goalies can be dramatic, but I believe that a level head is contagious to the defense.
What were the main factors in your decision to attend Quinnipiac and what other schools were you considering?
When I met with Coach (Eric) Fekete, I knew I had found my next home. His contagious enthusiasm for the game motivated me to stay in my home state. Playing near family and friends is important to me.
To play in the NEC against rival schools like Bryant and Sacred Heart, will give me the opportunity to play against my past teammates and friends. I’m especially looking forward to playing against former Darien players Jameson Love and Tim Clinton,, who are now playing at Bryant University, next season.
My focus right now is to win “Seven in ’11” (seventh straight state title in 2011), but I’m very much looking forward to playing Division I lacrosse at Quinnipiac. Some of the other schools I was considering were Stony Brook, Jacksonville and Providence. My best opportunity to develop as a student and lacrosse player is at Quinnipiac University under the guidance of Coach Fekete.
