It was just the first half of the first game of what Garden City hopes will be a memorable season.

But it wasn’t exactly what the Trojans were expecting.

Not at all.

Garden City wound up pulling away for an 8-1 win at Syosset yesterday afternoon, but the Trojans were held scoreless in the second quarter and were clinging to a precarious 2-0 lead at halftime, and Stephen Jahelka had seen enough.

The Harvard-bound defenseman, one of the nation’s top ranked seniors, took time out to address his teammates as they gathered in the near end zone while the Trojans coaches discussed second-half strategy about 50 yards away. (Photo above.)

In the second half, the Trojans came out on fire, pulling away for the win, building a 5-0 third quarter lead, and not allowing a goal until 1:17 remaining. Six different players scored goals for GC, with Rob Savage and Liam Kennedy scoring twice.

Both goalies – Dan Marino and Ryan Feit – played well, making 10 saves each.

It was a big win during a big early season stretch for GC, which faces Smithtown West on Saturday before a colossal clash against Ward Melville next week. Syosset has a showdown on Saturday against Sachem North.
