The spirit of community that exists in lacrosse is sometimes difficult for those not involved in the game to understand.

For the uninitiated, there is a stirring example of just this in now playing in Fairfield, Conn.

In its fourth season as a varsity program, Bridgeport Central endured a 1-15 season last year and was barely able to field the minimum number of players required for each game.

As a result, the Hilltoppers have decided to compete at the JV level this coming year in hopes of evolving eventually into a competitive varsity program.

One team that fits that criteria is nearby in Weston, home of the defending Class S state champions.

Weston players have invited Bridgeport Central players to their offseason workouts since November.

The communities became intertwined lax-wise starting almost two years ago, when Weston held fundraisers to support the Bridgeport Youth Lacrosse Association that continue now.

There have been several poignant stories on this union, with the latest coming from columnist Chris Elsberry in today’s Heart Connecticut Newspaper Group, including the Bridgeport-based Connecticut Post.
