The race for the Section 1 Class B championship this coming season has attracted quite a bit of attention.

That’s because Yorktown, which has 28 sectional titles the last 31 years,  has moved down from Class A, and Rye, which has advanced to the sectional final six straight years, has moved up from Class C.

Meanwhile, the teams that have met for the title the last two years — defending champ John Jay and 2009 champ Somers — are also back.

While those four teams have garnered much of the discussion, there are certainly some other contenders to keep an eye on.

One of them is Horace Greeley.

For more on the Quakers, let’s get the insights of senior goaltender Gabe Weissmann, who is headed to Division III power Middlebury.

After you do that, be sure to cast your vote in our poll question, which is on the Class B race in Section 1. (On the right panel of this page, just scroll past the “New Comments” and “Popular” tabs and click on “Poll,” and then cast your vote from the choices available, or write in your choice if it’s not listed.)

Now, here’s Gabe’s perspective on the upcoming season.

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
This year, our team started early preparing for the season by working out in group training sessions twice a week at the Kombine (Sports Performance & Fitness Center in Mount Kisco).

The purpose behind this is for the whole team to be in shape by the time the season comes around. Like every year, we are playing in the indoor league at the Brewster Sports Arena every Wednesday night. As preseason nears, we will try to practice indoor in the basketball gym, once the basketball season is over.

How does your schedule look, including scrimmages, and what games are you looking forward to?
Our schedule this year is definitely going to be, if not as tough, than tougher than last year’s schedule. As always, we will be playing John Jay, Rye, Byram Hills and Fox Lane, along with a few more out-of-league games. I am most looking forward to the Byram Hills game as last year we traded wins, and they are always tough competition.

What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
Some of our younger players will definitely surprise people. Many of the sophomores who are trying out for the varsity team this year are quick and have potential to make a difference in our big games. Junior midfielders Henry Fishkin and Brandon Gell are looking to make an big impact along with senior midfielder Mike Lentini.

What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
On the defensive end, our strengths will be in solid, man to man defense, and clears. We have three returning starting defenders in Brian Dubs, Joe Hinderstein and Jason Bressler. All three are very defensive smart and strong players. On the offensive end, Jack Gladstone and Alex Scott, both sophomore-year starters, will return this year as juniors to run our offense.

How do you view the race in your league and who do you think the contending teams will be?
The Class B race will definitely be very tight. Fox Lane, Rye and Byram Hills are all highly skilled teams, and on any day, each team has the capability of beating all of the others. I can easily see each one of those teams contending for the league championship.

Kid is one of the top goalies in Section 1.

Good job sizing things up Gabriel!

I agree with your assessment slacrosse. For my money he and Stevens from Fox Lane are the best in Section One.
