Do you want yet another example of the nationwide growth of lacrosse?

Here goes. Marquette University has announced that it will be adding Division I teams in both men’s and women’s lacrosse in 2012.

Considering Marquette’s Big East status — and its Midwest location — this is big news on many fronts.

Particularly during this era of cost cutting.

“Lacrosse is a thrilling sport, loved by fans and participants, and a natural fit for Marquette,” Marquette AD Steve Cottingham said in a press release announcing the move. “The national growth of lacrosse and Marquette’s membership in the BIG EAST make this exactly the right time for us to move forward with lacrosse as a varsity sport at Marquette.”

Needless to say, Marquette’s teams will undoubtedly be chock full of players from the nation’s No. 1 lacrosse hotbed, the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region. So be sure to weigh in with your thoughts on this big news.

one of the biggest things to ever happen to lacrosse in terms of growth for the sport… hopefully this influences all of the big east and the ACC teams to join lacrosse and open up more d1 scholarships

Very big for lax. I think Marquette wants to add another Big East sport at much less scholarship amount than football to help secure its status with the conference which is now applying pressure to Villanova to go I-A in football.
