Our current poll question is, “Who do you think will be Long Island’s best team in 2011?” (Don’t forget to exercise your right to vote. On the right panel of this page, just scroll past the “New Comments” and “Popular” tabs and click on “Poll,” and then click on your choice.)

Two of the nominees for that honor — Garden City and Manhasset — will be in the same class — Class B — for the first time in a long time. Manhasset, of course, has won back-to-back Class C state titles. Garden City (shown above in last year’s team photo) was a state finalist last year.

So that means the nation’s most tradition-rich rivalry may see the teams meeting twice.

Whether or not GC and ‘Set meet for the Class B Nassau County title remains to be seen, of course.

But we can pass along one definite date for a Trojans-Indians matchup this coming season.

The 120th Woodstick Classic will be played on Saturday, April 30 at Manhasset.

Also of note – Garden City is working on finalizing a game against the team some feel is the best Class A team on Long Island — Ward Melville. It has been tentatively set for April 2 at Stony Brook University, coach Steve Finnell told me tonight.

Other non-league games of note for Garden City include at Syosset (March 22), vs. Smithtown West (March 26) and vs. Duxbury (Aprul 16 at Harvard University).

GC will also play San Ramon from California on April 7. (GC alum and Maryland grad Peter Worstell is San Ramon’s coach).

A possible matchup against Maryland power St. Paul’s is being worked on as well.

Big league games for the Trojans promise to be against Wantagh and South Side.

In other scheduling news, the annual Ward Melville-West Islip showdown is scheduled for Wednesday, April 27 at Ward Melville.

Nassau schedules should be up soon. You can access those by clicking here.

For a rundown of finalized Section 1 league schedules, click here. Please note, gang, that the Section 1 league dates are the ones assigned by the section. Between now and the time schedules are finalized, many of these dates will be changed by mutual agreement of the coaches.

I can report that the Yorktown-John Jay game will be either Friday, April 1 or Saturday, April 2 at John Jay.

Stay tuned for more on that.

Hey Joe … Do you have league breakouts for section 1 for 2011?

  2. Joe Lombardi says:

    Bobby C –

Hope all’s well. The complete alignment is being finalized this month. The league you’re most interested in will be made up of:

    Rye
    Harrison
    Greeley
    Fox Lane
    Byram Hills

You can get more info on some of the other leagues here:

Thanks Joe … I like the league … We obviously will be the underdogs but hopefully some of the football “mojo” will follow over to the lax season!!! Great to see the Huskies and Garnets in the same league … We’re looking for the young players that have come through our youth program to finally make an impact and I believe they will … Time for the Dawgs to step it up … GO HUSKIES!!!

  3. slacrosse says:

    Joe,

BOSCES only lists the 8 League games. Assume you mean the remaining 8 games (cross-overs, etc) will be out later this month?? Thx

    • Joe Lombardi says:

Yes, slacrosse. As noted in the post above, only the league schedules are finalized in Section 1. We’ve been passing along info on crossovers as it’s been available. Some of those schedules won’t be complete till January/February.

  4. Back in Purple says:

I hope that I don’t have to put too much stock in the dates on the BOCES schedule either. Although the AD’s might not like it, some teams should opt to move dates if they can agree. Yorktown vs. John Jay should take place on a weekend. As of now, its taking place on a thursday afternoon in late April- thumbs down to that one. That game needs to be under the lights on a Friday or Saturday night. If it were up to me, it would be played at the New Meadowlands Arena with a performance by AC/DC at halftime.

      Back in Purple –

I should have noted the Section 1 league dates are the ones assigned by the section. Between now and the time schedules are finalized, many of these dates will be changed by mutual agreement of the coaches.

I can report that the Yorktown-John Jay game will be either Friday, April 1 or Saturday, April 2 at John Jay.

I updated the original post to include this info.

  5. Islander says:

If WM doesn’t beat WI they should be a bit disappointed given how much they have coming back and how much WI lost.

  6. laxer wm says:

West Islip has better coaching they will get better and better as the season goes on. the ward melville teams over the last five years seems to get worse as the season progresses. I think ward melville needs to hire a good young energetic coach that wants to put the time in to help the program grow.
