It gets late early out there.

That old Yogi Berra line, initially used to describe the conditions for left fielders battling the setting sun in the old Yankee Stadium, can also be used when it comes to recruiting.

As we told you earlier on Tuesday, we saw our first sophomore verbal commitment for the nation’s No. 1 lax hotbed, the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region, made this week.

Though he has three varsity seasons remaining, Syosset sophomore goaltender Ryan Feit has decided his college future will be at Johns Hopkins.

If you checked our “Updated recruiting review and commitment rundown” tonight, you also learned that Sachem North junior attackman/midfielder Cody Petillo has committed to Rutgers. More on that to come.

Feit, who is one of a handful of players to make the Long Island ESG team before their sophomore season, becomes the second Syosset player to commit to a major D-I program this month. This past Monday, we told you that junior attackman Ryan Hunter has verbally committed to Ohio State. Just like Hunter, Feit made an impact on the Braves’ varsity team as a freshman.

Now, without further ado, here’s a Q&A with Ryan Feit on his commitment to Hopkins.

What were the main factors in your decision to attend Hopkins?
Growing up,  I attended lots of Hopkins games in Baltimore and always watched the team play on TV, becoming a huge fan.  It has been my dream to play there since the very beginning of my lacrosse career.  Going there and meeting with Coach (Dave) Pietramala was an amazing experience.  His enthusiasm for the lacrosse program and the school and its strong academics are what sealed the deal for me.

The lacrosse team at Johns Hopkins is a second family for the players and being able to have share in that experience is something I look forward to. I want to win a D-I championship so hopefully there will be one in the future for Johns Hopkins University.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was also thinking about Princeton, Harvard and Cornell.

What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
I will try to work on my athletic ability outside of the cage and really focus on speeding up my hands so I get to the shots quicker.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My ability to get out of the net and take control of the ball and take control of the defense are a few of my great strengths.  I am a very aggressive goalie and not afraid to come out and make the play on the loose balls around the net.

What players have you looked up to as you have moved up through the varsity ranks?
Playing varsity as an eighth-grader there were many upperclassmen I looked up to. Thomas Keith (Cornell), Ryan Hunter (Ohio State), Doug Tesoriero (Cornell), Alirio DeMeireles (Yale) and Justin Feit (Columbia).  They were always there to help me improve my game and get extra practice with me when I needed it.

When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
When I was in seventh grade I realized if I continued to work hard I could play college lacrosse.  My high school coach (John Calabria) was always there to help and inspire me, and he keeps pushing me to reach my potential.

Firstly congrats!!. Great lax and academics.

BUT I hope that in the very near future, the NCAA bans any kind of commits until summer of Junior yr. It’s out of hand with these schools (UNC, UVA, etc).

Lots of things can effect a kid’s choice of school during their soph and junior yrs + summers. These schools just try and lock up these kids before they can fully expose themselves to other schools!

    Congrats bud! Great choice!!

Saw thi kid in the middle of last season when he started. He’s sick.

This kid keeps getting better. Nice “get” for OSU.

  5. Laxer Dude says:

    Wow a soph… That’s no joke.

Hopkins is a great school and when your kid gets a chance to attend and then play for a school like that – its hard to hold back anyone – no matter their age. Now my question is as a sophmore you could have good grades – as a junior the tank could fall out and you be driving no where. What happens then? They school takes him in no matter what? There are so many more kids now that play the game so the schools have more choosing options and would that committment be in jeapordy? Or if its just the best player – they work with the kid and get him into a program where he will succeed? A degree from Hopins can open a great many doors and the opportinuity to play for a time honored program – pricesless (or $50k a year).

I wondered about this myself, as the proud parent of a Hopkins alum, who is now in grad school there, I can guarantee that this is no party school, very serious and focused is what I would call most of the students. And the support by the alum for the lax program is incredible. I wish Ryan all the best, and I will be watching him in a few years from the nest!

Gotta believe at a top academic place like JH if a soph verbal commit lets his grades slide Jr yr, he really is at great risk of jepordizing the commit

      • BigBadBear says:

well, petro got his neck out there a bit..unless he really bombs, he is in…coach has a lot of influence at this school where lax is the only D1 sport, and the Hall of Fame is right next to the field

  7. Just sayin says:

Wow this kid must be sickkkk

  8. Laxtime says:
