At 5-foot-7, 145 pounds, Rob Caffrey is usually one of the smallest players on the field.

But the Lakeland/Panas attackman has come up big time and again for the Rebels.

Last year, the quick and elusive Caffrey registered 70 goals and 33 assists to help the Rebels win the Section 1 Class A championship and advance to the state semifinals for the first time since 1997. The Rebels, who finished 18-4, also beat rival Yorktown twice in a season for the first time ever. He went on to star for the Hudson Valley scholastic men’s Empire State Games team.

After looking to lead the Rebels to a repeat of their title, Caffrey will move on to the collegiate level. Yesterday, as we reported on our “Updated recruiting review and commitment rundown,” he decided where that will be. Caffrey will join the Providence Friars of the newly aligned Big East Lacrosse Conference.

Here’s a Q&A with Rob on his commitment:

What were the main factors in your decision to attend Providence?
Providence was a school that interested me from the start of my college search. It is a good academic school with a nice campus. Also, Providence just entered the Big East Conference for lacrosse last year so that really caught my eye to play at a high level.  The coaches and team are very welcoming. Providence College is definitely growing as a program and that was something I wanted to be a part of.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Some other schools I visited and were considering were Drexel, Gettysburg, Manhattan, Geneseo and Franklin & Marshall.

What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
To play at the next level, I will need to get bigger and stronger. I am not as tall as most guys so it is important that I can get more muscle to compete against some of the bigger defensemen.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My quickness and my shot.  I work well off-ball and can lose my defenders easily.  When I get the ball, I like to push it to the goal and try to finish any opportunities I get.

What players have you looked up to as you have moved up through the varsity ranks?
Some players that I have looked up to are Jack Doherty and John Fitzpatrick.  They both played attack on my team when I was a sophomore and I learned many different moves from them.  Also, I have looked up to Andrew Collins from the ’07 L/P team and Mike Malan from the ’08 L/P team.  Both of these players are some of the hardest workers I know and great leaders.

When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
I first realized last summer when I played in some tournaments and camps against some top players around the country and was able to compete against them and contribute to help my team win.

Caffrey and the Rebels will just continue to score if there aren’t any injuries. He just has “it”, especially the goaling abilities.

Caffery is arguably the most underrated lacrosse player in section 1. From the day he leaves for providence he will be running the team with his quickness and lacrosse IQ. Being on multiple teams with him and also competing against him has made me appreciate his talent as well as helped me improve myself. This kid is dirty and is going to do work in the big east when he gets there.
    Congrats Rob your my boy

    heychampion,

Any thoughts about being underrated (if he was) had to disappear if you really watched the kid go in key games, then in the playoffs, then absolutely vs West Islip (WI fans sitting near me were really impressed) and then playing for HV.

    Tough hockey player as well.
