It pays to be a good student — and a good student of the game.

Rye rising senior Matt McReddie parlayed both those attributes into an opportunity to play lacrosse at the next level.

The 6-foot, 188-pound midfielder will be playing at Bates College in Maine after considering several other prestigious programs.

McReddie, a two-sport captain at Rye, was a member of the Hudson Valley’s Empire State Games team this summer.

Here’s a Q&A with Matt on his commitment:

What were the main factors in your decision to attend Bates?
In addition to being an excellent school academically, I liked that way the lacrosse season is set up, with optional fall ball, winter conditioning and a condensed regular season. At Bates, there is also short spring term that works very well with lacrosse season.

What other schools were you considering?
I visited or considered Colby, Wesleyan, Lafayette, St. Lawrence and Union.

What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
I need to improve my shot, speed and quickness.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I think my main strength is my “Lacrosse IQ” and I would describe my style of play as “old school”—not pretty, but still effective.

What players have you looked up to as you have moved up through the varsity ranks?
Cole McCormack and Michael Linehan.

Congrats at Bates Matt! A great school with really well respected coach and program that was very competitive last season.

Matt does it all (football as well). Very steady player at both M and DM with top lax IQ. He’s where he needs to/should be all of the time.

Congratulations Matt and the entire McReddie Family. You’ve worked hard to achieve your goal to play at the next level and it’s well deserved. Good luck with your senior year at Rye and all the best at Bates. The McCormack Family

Playing lax in Maine sounds pretty cool. Good luck Matty!

  6. Laximus says:

Sounds like a perfect choice. Great example of using lax to get a terrific college opportunity. That’s what it’s all about.

  7. dee-up says:

So this adds a little spice up in Maine, as the Putnam Valley Vs. Rye rivialery will live on up there in a small way . Same conference

  8. Slacrosse says:

    Dee Up

Who going up to Maine from PV and what school. Thx

  9. dee-up says:

I got from a good source over the summer games (from this character that calls himself 12rock) that the Valley face off kid O’G will be at UNE this Fall going into the medical field.

  10. slacrosse says:

Thanx dee-up. Real tough face-off kid for sure.

  11. UNE says:

Is that for University of New England?

    Good job by him. Congrats!

  12. dee-up says:

Odd you would ask Slacrosse , during our talks this guy brought your name up . He tells me he goes on lthe blog often , and he wanted to know if i had heard of sla,, and who it was . He says your a class acts who’s kids have crossed paths often. Anyway he was funny to talk to…good guy looking to officiate some lax down the line

  13. lax says:

Dee-up, Bates is in the NESCAC. I don’t know what conference UNE is, but I know it’s not NESCAC. Colby, which is also in Maine is in the NESCAC, but if this Put Val guy is going to UNE, it’s not the same conference. Just a helpful heads up.

  14. lax-for-life says:

Bates does play UNE in a non-conference game in 2011.

  15. lax says:

    Well then that changes it.

  16. slacrosse says:

    dee-up,

Yeah 12rock is a great PV supporter and knows his lax like you.

  17. laxsalad says:

nescac has developed as a very competitive conference in D-III especially with Tufts picking up the big win last year. Probably the most competitive conference in the country too. Games are very close almost (uniformly) in the top half of the conference. With Middlebury being a perennial power and Wesleyan having several very good years in a row now, look for NESCAC team in the finals for years to come.

  18. dee-up says:

There r 2 brothers from Pleasantville H.S that r now at UNE. One of them earned rookie of the year …nice rep 4 section 1 lax
