Yorktown’s first two Division I commitments for the Class of 2011 came about just the last few days.

And the two players who made those college choices, Ty Schuldt and Justin Mabus, are very familiar with each other, having played football, lacrosse and basketball together since childhood.

But after one more year with the Huskers, they’ll be going their separate ways.

Schuldt will be heading to Hartford. Mabus, as we told you earlier this week, decided on Towson.

Though Mabus, an athletic midfielder with good size, will not be teammates with Schuldt at the next level, he will be reunited at Towson with former Yorktown all-America defenseman John Fennessy.

Here’s a Q&A we just completed with Justin on his decision:

What were the main factors in your decision to attend Towson?
Once I stepped on Towson’s campus, I loved it there. Not only was I comfortable, but I saw myself going there.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
My decision was between Towson and Delaware. But I also visited St. John’s, Fairfield, West Point, Hartford and a couple others.

What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
I will have to get used to the difference in play, my new teammates and the style.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I guess I could say I love the transition part. I’m not really sure to be honest. I just play and try not to think.

What players have you looked up to as you have moved up through the varsity ranks?
I looked up to (John) Ranagan, K.I. (Kevin Interlicchio), Fenn (John Fennessy), Rocky B. (Bonitatibus), Tom Interlicchio and all the top Yorktown players.

When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the D-I level?
When I started as sophomore on Ranagan’s line and with K.I. at attack and all of our defense that is playing at the next level.

You and Ty Schuldt have played together in lax, football — and also basketball — for a while. Are you happy that you both wound up committing to D-I schools within a few days of each other?
To be honest, I never thought of it that way. But yes I’m happy even though it’s going to be weird considering we play every sport together and we’re usually on the same team. So it will be weird without him.

Hope your summer is going well. How will the Bears be next season? Hope prospects are positive.

going well, hope the same for you. Will be yet another interesting year for the Bears, lose a couple of important seniors, but also will be the first year we will have 9th graders graduating from our youth league, I would love to see a couple of them make the varsity. We had a pretty successful sound shore team.
Rye moving up this year, how will they do?
Already looking for fall ball schedules!

    BigBadBear,

Yeah good to see the Bcliff “youth” kids start moving into the high school teams. Future will be bright!

Rye will be very strong returning 10 of its top 12 players (8 playing football this Fall). Will no longer have a dominant face-off kid with McCormack leaving but his back-up (DiPalma) who played a fair amount is very solid. Bigger question is who will replace Lenihan in goal. In “B” Jay has to be the favorite with Town, Rye and Somers fighting it out below Jay.

  15. reLAX says:

Should be a nice Ytown connection at Towson with Fenn and Mabo.

  16. GreenWhite says:

Nice football win over White Plains Mabo! Bring home another one vs New Ro… Then it’s on to the sectional finals!
