It was a wet — and interesting Monday — throughout the region.

In the Hudson Valley, Yorktown seems to have hit its stride heading into games against unbeaten Arlington and Lakeland/Panas in the Murphy Cup later this week. The Huskers, coming off an impressive 11-9 win over Chaminade, pulled away for a 13-7 win at Somers, Yorktown’s third straight against the Tuskers.

In action involving Long Island and Connecticut squads, Garden City overcame an early deficit to overtake New Canaan 5-4. And East Hampton suffered its first loss after a  9-9 start, falling 10-9 to a Hauppauge team that has lost just once (to Comsewogue).

It was an unusually eventful Monday and the start of what promises to be a week that has a noteworthy ending with rivalry games Manhasset-Garden City, Yorktown-Lakeland/Panas and New Canaan/Darien all set for Saturday.

Now, to today. In perhaps the marquee matchup of the day, a pair of 9-1 teams battle it out in Suffolk as West Islip, which has not lost since falling to Sachem North in its opener, hosts Connetquot at 4:30 p.m. Connetquot’s lone loss was to a Ward Melville team that will host Smithtown West today at 4:15 p.m. minus 15 players who have been suspended for the game for undisclosed disciplinary reasons, according to Newsday.

The team that beat West Islip, Sachem North, plays at East Islip at 4:30 p.m. Walt Whitman, which has a win over Ward Melville on its resume, hosts Smithrown East at 4:45 p.m.

In other action, Lindenhurst is at Northport at 4:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., Middle Country hosts William Floyd and Sachem East visist West Babylon.

At 4 p.m., Copiague hosts Brentwood, North Bablyon is at Riverhead and Half Hollow Hills East hosts Longwood.

In Nassau,  Farmingdale hosts Baldwin, North Shore plays at Mineola and Syosset visits Oceanside at 4:30 p.m. At 4:45 p.m., Cold Spring Harbor visits Floral Park, Clarke is at Island Trees, Carey hosts Division and Uniondale hosts Port Washington. Hicksville hosts Freeport and Massapequa visits Herricks at the Herricks Community Center at 4:15 p.m.

It’s a busy day in the Lower Hudson Valley. Fox Lane, fresh off an upset win over Put Valley, hosts Pleasantville. Also, at 4:30 p.m., Put Valley hopes to bounce back from the Fox Lane loss when it plays at Croton-Harmon, Edgemont hosts Dobbs Ferry, John F. Kennedy Catholic is at Hen Hud, Rye visits Greeley, Stepinac is at Harrison, Scarsdale visits Pelham, Peekskill hosts Haldane, North Salem visits Ossining, John Jay hosts Byram Hills, Brewster is at Mahopac and Lakeland/Panas plays at  Wappingers.

The Harvey School, which is off to a 5-0 start, hosts Masters at 4:15 p.m. The Cavaliers handled Masters 14-5 in earlier this month.

In Connecticut, first-year coach Scott Bulkley takes his Greenwich team to Tiger Hollow Stadium in Ridgefield for a 6 p.m. game against defending FCIAC champion Ridgefield.

Darien, which fell to Ridgefield in last year’s FCIAC final, hosts Fairfield Ludlowe at 4 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., Brien McMahon visits Staples.

In the CHSAA, St. Anthony’s meets Kellenberg, Chaminade faces Monsignor Farrell and Fordham Prep faces Holy Trinity in 4:30 p.m. games.

Be sure to post your thoughts and predictions on these matchups as well as any info on the scores and game details.

  1. Laxmaster says:

I will be curious to see how Arlington fares against Yorktown. This is an improving program with a coaching staff who can clearly take the program to the next level, given the talent and numbers at a school that size. I can only imagine that they will show better than last years sectional game, which was basically over 30 seconds after the first face off! If they can keep the lead to less than double digits then it is a great sign for the future of the Admiral program.

  2. LaxFan says:

Can John Jay be stopped by a team in there league?

  3. Doid23 says:

    Laxfan – Yes

Arlington – If they lose to Yorktown by 6 or under, it would be considered a great showing, and a strong sign of the direction their program is taking. Heck, anything better than 21-1 will do that. But I think Town wins this one easily, by 10 or more.

  4. slacrosse says:

    LaxFan,

Realistically Jay and Town should win all their remaining Section 1 games being very solid favorites in all cases except two where they will still be favorites but not as substantial.

Jay will be favored over Somers but Somers has a chance to beat Jay.

Town will be favored over LP but just like above, LP has a chance to beat them.

  5. Old Rugger says:

Town 19 Arlington 6 This game in 3 years will be much closer
JJ 14 BH 9 (Closer than it should be as JJ can’t finish for 4 Qtrs even though they have much more depth than BH)
FL 10 Pvill 9 (This game is a pickem in my book)
PV 16 CH 7 (CH is a one man team and PV will rebound (good coaching))
HenHud 14, JFK 7 Vin coaching against the team he established many years ago, JFK too thin at Middy and Lax IQ a work in progress.
Rye Greeley Rye by 2 if RYE FOGO is healthy, Greely by 1 in upset if not (sorry Slacrosse)
Pac 12 Brewster 8. Pac looking decent this year (they have an offense and a goalie) and Brewster in rebuilding.
    LP 16 Wapp 6
    Haldane by 10 over Peekskill
Ossining 15 NS 8 Big school vs little school (I know Manhasset & Lafayette, but in general as parity grows school size will be part of the equation, as well as qualified youth coaches)

Of the above games I like the Fox Lane vs. Pville and the Rye vs HG to be the best back and forth. HG has one guy that can light it up if Rye doesn’t stay tight on him and Rye if healthy can keep possesion from most FOs, slow down the game and be patient on offense. Look for a low scoring game on grass.

  6. LI Lax says:

    WI 13, Connetquot 10
    Smithtown West 13, WM 4
    Whitman 10, Smithtown East 7
    Sachem North 14, EI 12
    Northport 11, Lindy 6
Sachem East 7, West Babylon 6

    Town 18, Arlington 3

  7. Doid23 says:

I’ve got a feeling Jay is going to beat Byram Hills by 10 or more, WI comfortably over Connetquot, Greeley close over Rye, Pac big over Brewster.

  8. slacrosse says:

    Old Rugger,

Hey I can take it. Always appreciate your view.

  9. lovetheunderdog says:

slacrosse, good point. im looking for both somers and l/p to make the upset. neither of them have put together an entire game of lacrosse in big games yet all season and i think if they come prepared and play all 48 minutes, they can pull it out. If andy fazio can shut down KI which somers and jay failed to do so, the playing field will be leveled and l/p can bring the cup home for them.

  10. slacrosse says:

    lovetheunderdog

I’ve always been a very vocal fan of Fazio. Inch for inch (nah, he’s not 5 ft, how bout 4’11’) I think he’s at least among the best (if not the best) D kid in Section 1. IMO a no brainer AA but I guess he doesn’t make it due to his height and maybe no D1 school?

  11. Indian J says:

    Doid23,

It would be very nice if that happened. In the spirit of focusing on the positive, I’ll add a goal.

    Jay 18 Byram Hills 7

    Town 17 Arlington 4
    Foxes 10 Pleasantville 7
    Hen Hud 11 Kennedy 7
    Rye 6 Greely 5
    Pac 13 Brewster 8
    L/P 16 Wappingers 4
    Ossining 14 North Salem 5

Somers does not play today. I have left myself completely vulnerable to ridicule if Jay does not do well ( Or if Byram plays awesome !) Rye v. Greely will be an interesting game. I’m also pulling for the kids that are playing today for Ward Melville and their community to do the best that they can. We all know kids make mistakes. Maybe they will get to discover some new talent and … who knows?

  12. BigBadBear says:

KI not a good match up for Fazio, but you gotta love that kid

  13. Doid23 says:

    lovetheundergod,

What did KI put up against J? I thought they shut him down.

  14. pikelax99 says:

I believe KI only had 1g vs JJ……Should certainly be an interesting match up… KI is about 6’2, 220lbs of muscle BUT Fazio is a tough kid who def wont back down from the challenge

  15. Sec1 says:

    Byram 2 JJ 1 after 1

  16. LAXman says:

    Is Walter playing?

  17. scooter says:

Fazio handled Ranagan in the section finals the best of anyone that I saw last season. He’s the most underrated player in the Section. If he was 5-11 he would be considered one of the best defensemen in the nation.

  18. Lax4Fun says:

Anyone have any updates on the L.I. Games? or the jj game?. Cuse I think Town is looking good lately as a TEAM they seem to be evolving more and more each game . Interesting to see how they handle the pressure that goes along with winning,

  19. LacrosseInsider says:

Walter is playing. Jay up 5 to 3 with 5 mins left in 3rd

  20. LacrosseInsider says:

Walter is playing. Jay up 6 to 4 with 5 mins left in 3rd

  21. LI Lax says:

Whitman 7, Smithtown East 4 at half
WI 10, Connetquot 6 at half

  22. what's the score? says:

LacrosseInsider are there anymore updates from the JJ game??

  23. Sec1 says:

    JJ 11 Byram 6 Final

  24. LAXman says:

Service is horrible at JJ so it must be hard.

  25. Sec1 says:

    JJ 11. Byram. 6 Final

  26. LI Lax says:

Whitman is shellacking Smithtown East 16-5, they have cleared the bench.

Ward Melville somehow won 13-8 according to posters on laxpower…I’m in shock over this one.

  27. LI Lax says:

    Northport 10, Lindenhurst 7

  28. LI Lax says:

Sachem North 7, East Islip 6 OT

  29. laxing says:

    jj-11 BH-6

    Daniello 5g, J. Morris 2g, Weil 2g, B. Morris 1g, Saldutti 1g

not 100% sure on goals, but roughly correct.

  30. LI Lax says:

    WI 16, Connetquot 9 final

  31. LAXman says:

    http://johnjaylacrosse.vnsports.com/statistics/gamestats.asp?t=CFB6145E440EB3DA1960486E1F5D0442&id=8151FFD23C522D2CE49E319CC741165C

Daniello with 5 and 2 impressive. O’donnell with 4 assists now leads the team in assists.

  32. '94' HH Alumni says:

All I can say is WOW! Kennedy was only down 4-2 going into the 4th quarter. You should of heard Coach Solomon yelling at his team. Great job Sav’s! Keep those kids fighting.

  33. laxxxxxxxx says:

John Jay played a solid second half, however their first half was horrible throwing the ball away dropping passes, and shooting right at the goalie.

  34. slacrosse says:

    scooter

Agree with you on Fazio at 5’11”.

  35. lacrossegeek says:

    Rye 7-5 over Greeley

  36. Pac Man says:

    Pac 12 Brewster 4

    Brando 3-2

    Foley 4-0

    Care 0-3

    Mcguigan 16 saves

  37. slacrosse says:

Hey for sure JJ was gonna control and easily win the BH game today but gotta hand it to the BH program for playing well enough (hear JJ didn’t play that well 1st half) to not get blown out by a very strong J team!

  38. laxing says:

By the way BH goalie played very well with 15+ saves

  39. Laxington says:

Shutting down KI will be as much about the sliding defender as the on-ball defender.

The hot man can’t slide with his stick. He needs to use his body — and forcefully.

  40. LacrosseInsider says:

Very sloppy game for both Jay and Byram. Schurr cleared the bench early in the 4th when they were up by 6….class act and nice way to get playing time for some of the boys. Jay is 8-1, they keep finding a way to win….Rye is up next on Thursday…..

  41. ReLaxin says:

    Pac- 12 Brewster-4

It was 2-1 at the end of 1 when Brewster got an illegal stick penalty. Pac capitalized for 2 in 3 minutes.Went down 4-1 and could build any momentum. A few bad turnovers and if was quickly 7-2. I think that was the half time score. Pac moves the ball nicely for some wide open shots. #3 and #8 for Pac had a nice game.

  42. I-95 Lax says:

    Darien 11, Fairfield Ludlowe 3
Staples 11, McMahon 2 (That was easy!)

  43. slacrosse says:

Yeah nice for Rye to get a win. Good effort by HG.

Was kind of sloppy play (passing in particular) by both teams. Both goalies played very well making many nice saves, picking up ground ball shots on the grass/dirt area in front of the goals. That takes some doing on that field.

Feel McCormack (maybe playing at 60-65% level) really was a backbone of O winning 13-16 FO, scoring 2 goals and picking up key ground balls.

  44. not really says:

Lacrosse Insider–the JJ score was 8-5 well into the 4th Q so fairly sure no benches were (or should have been) cleared by Schurr. They did not go up by 6 until very late. Schurr was rightfully playing to win a game that was too close for JJ’s comfort well into the 4th Q until they finally pulled away.

  45. westchesterlax says:

Fox Lane over PVille 5-4 in 4 OT.

Great Goalie battle. Both goalies traded saves throughout the game and were very impressive.

Conor Morris (2 goals) finally broke the tie late in the 4th overtime with a shot off the whistle that caught Pville goalie Connor Fraylick off guard.

Fox Lane has shown tremendous heart this season and doesn’t seem to give up against anyone. Class B dark horse anyone?

  46. Jericho says:

LI Lax – Looking at the box, seems most of the key players played for WM. Remember this team has a roster of around 40. Losing 15 may seem insurmountable but I guess it depends who they were.

  47. JustAFan says:

ridgefield pullled away from greenwich after a slow start – was up 14-6 or so when i left in the 4th. ridgefield quietly putting some wins up. watch out JJ and town, tigers could sneak up on you.

  48. laxxxxxxxx says:

John Jay did put their backups in with around 7 mins left in the 4th quarter.

  49. witches brew says:

    Ossining 9 North Salem 6

Lackluster affair from the start. O got up in the second and basically coasted, played some guys, but pedestrian throughout.

NS probably outshot O, but Bardwell was, well, Bardwell and O capitalized enough to remain comfortably ahead. O defense firmed in the fourth. NS defense left too many guys open deep near the cage and McCulloch had a rip or two with a bunch of assts..

Ossining has PV on Thursday, NS has Kennedy.

  50. Theeere Great! says:

Ridgefield was up 16-5 at the start of the 4th Colsey put the back ups in Final score 16+ to nine

  51. laxing says:

Conor Morris of fox lane game-winning goal?.. Is there any relation to the Morris twins at JJ?

  52. LI Lax says:

Jericho…yea Ryan and Mazzone apparently were not among the suspended players, but the box score doesn’t tell us about the defense. I wonder if Kunkel and crew were all there. The backup goalie played and some unfamiliar names were in the box score, but they are pretty deep no question about it.

  53. laxxxxxxxx says:

    Laxing their cousins

  54. T.B. Toad says:

First two games Fox Lane 0-2 with a 7 Goals Against Average.

    Coach tweaks the defensive personel.

    6-0 with a 3.83 GAA.

    Goalie has been super throughout.

    Give the Foxes some love.

  55. CoppsHill says:

With no Darien on the regular season schedule, Ridgefield’s biggest games are vs Town, JJ and Somers.

  56. laxxxxxxxx says:

John Jay has really underperformed in every game of the year. You may think that this will just make them a bad team, but f you’ve watched them play in numerous games, you see some spotlights of tremendous playing. Such as the first half vs Rye making a huge statement, then letting them come back or the second half vs Yorktown, pulling back from a 5-1 deficit. Basically they’ve shown how they can play they just need to play that way for an entire game. Not one quarter here or there. When they reach that level of superb playing for an entire game, you’ll know.

  57. Old Rugger says:

agree about both top 20 thing (over rated to be rated) And while I like to see some of the free flowing ofensive movement that on occasion comes from JJ this year, they also are in need of some of the discipline of old and respect for posession that seems to be lacking this year more than the last few.

  58. Est 1873 says:

Tony the Tiger..ease up a bit…it’s one game…long way to go before they are great…

  59. Theeere Great! says:

Just trying to have a clever name, The tigers still have a lot to prove

  60. CoppsHill says:

Est 1873 … Loosen up. Are you a paranoid coach or something? I like that “They’re Great” name. It’s very clever. So relax.

  61. laxxxer says:

FL really got on a roll after the North Rockland game, offensive coach threw in a lot of tricky plays and offensive sets and the team has been finishing much better since then. The defense was solid since day 1, minus the brewster game where they had experienced injuries prior to the game, which brought about the personnel change.

along with that they are currently winning games with 4 key players injured…. testament to the coaching of the team. good job FL

  62. Doid23 says:

Well, I’ve got to give credit to Byram Hills, I discounted them, yet they keep playing tough against decent teams (J, Rye, Greeley). Maybe I’ve underestimated them, I won’t anymore.

For the kids who played from WM, something to be proud of, that’s for sure. Should give the other 15 something to think about. Then again, it’s high school, I did stupid things as well, hope that they learn from this and get their priorities straight.

Nice win for Rye and Fox Lane.

  63. Just sayin says:

Yo 1873 ur way to uptight. Chill man.

  64. LI Lax says:

BTW for you JJ fans…Ithaca 14, Corning East 4 tonight

  65. Jaybird says:

Another testament to the parity in lax Joe has been talking about. So true. Canandaigua, the defending state champs in Class B, beat Corning East by two goals. John Jay beat Corning by one. Then Ithaca beats Corning by 10. It’s whoever comes to play each day and who is most motivated, makes fewest mistakes. You’d almost think this game we’re talking about is being played by 16 and 17 year old kids. Wait …

  66. LI Lax says:

Well, I think that it proves that Ithaca is one of the statewide favorites in Class A…which we already knew but people tend to forget about them all the way over there in section 4.

  67. Old Rugger says:

Li Lax Itaca is a favorite for sure, problem is their schedule is mainly section 4 and beside CE not that strong this year, and a down year for CE as well.

  68. Est 1873 says:

Sorry “Tony”…evidently that was too strong for this board, thought it was clever, my bad! Just sayin…Ridgefield beating a 3-3 team by 6 goals is not the end of the world…clearly over stated!

  69. no one says:

anyone get a score on the l/p vs wappingers? lax power has l/p losing, don’t know if that was a mistake or not. it is listed on the team site not the score site. would be very shocked if true

  70. slacrosse says:

    Jaybird,

Ha, ha. You’re right. Great post

  71. slacrosse says:

    Old Rugger,

You called it! Rye by 2. Great prediction

  72. mad_lax says:

    laxpower has l/p winning 19-7

  73. no one says:

    mad lax,

thanks, earlier this morning they had it reversed

  74. slaxie says:

L I Lax — good point and JJ beat Y’town who beat Chaminade!!

  75. Old Rugger says:

slacrosse even a blind squirel finds an acorn

  76. Fan at game says:

I heard newman got to play yesterday though its hard to tell since he can turn invisible

  77. LAXman says:

Ithaca is awesome this year. They have absolutely dominated every team they played so far. Not only that but they very recently beat Hill Academy in a scrimmage, arguably the best team in the world last year that’s very competitive this year as well.

  78. Laxit says:

    LP 10, Yorktown 9

Yorktown will take LP lightly and loose

  79. LI Lax says:

Doesn’t matter who you play, you can still be good. Anyone who beats CE by 10 goals is very very good.

  80. Bigeasy says:

Will they lose or will they loose? Town team is not allowed to take Murph Cup lightly. How would they take a team that almost beat them in section finals lightly? There is tons of pressure on the Town team to win that game above all games. Town 14 LP 6

  81. slacrosse says:

Town won’t take LP lightly. They know how tough LP is and want to really keep their run going.

    Town wins 13-10.

  82. Theeere Great! says:

1873 the only reason the score was that close is because the starters went out in the beginning of the fourth quarter with the starters it was 16-5 and it potentially could have been a total blowout

  83. Est 1873 says:

OK “tony”….let it go…”theeere great!”…I get it…sorry! FCIAC’s will be interesting this year for sure

  84. woodenstick says:

The score was 14-6 in the middle of the 4th when the subs went in for RHS, the game ended at 16-9. And a little before half it was 4-4. A good win for Ridgefield, but not the total blow-out suggested.

  85. greenpiece says:

Look for Town in a big win on Saturday. Fazio is not the issue-and no he did not stick with Ranagan. He ran along side of him for a while but never squared up to him on D, never took the ball away and never stopped Ranagan from doing what he wanted to do that day. Prunty is playing well and gave Somers a hard time. Prunty and Hano are the X factors for LP. However, LP has no answer for KI; even if they slide early or double they are then left with Lieberman & co. Reminder: Lieberman and Schuldt took town on a great ride through the State semis last year while teams were shutting KI. They are doing it again now just with the help of another 5 scorers from Town. Town had 8 score 11 goals against Cham and 7 score 13 goals against Somers. LP does not have enough solid D to stop so many threats. Bottom line is KI will once again score at will and lead Town to another win, Town alot to a little.

  86. pikelax99 says:

Its the murphy cup, anything can happen! BUT I just dont see how L/P’s defense can possibly hang with Ytowns offense….Its not just KI but now Lieberman, Procelli, Shuldt, Mabus, Gately, Mariano, Mclee have all shown they can score goals…KI has done a great job at knowing when to challenge the double team and when to move it on to his teamates…Gonna be a fun game as usual but I see Town winning:

    Yorktown Huskers- 15
    Lakeland/Panas Rebels- 7

  87. Old Rugger says:

Can anyone say stall ball. Town 9 LP 8 would pick town by more but it is the Murphy cup
