It will be a busy week of action as we approach the midway point of the regular season.

The week will be capped by a tripleheader at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington on Saturday featuring six of the top programs in the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region.

The “Lead the Way Lacrosse Day of Heroes” features St. Anthony’s vs. New Canaan in Game 1 at noon, followed by Chaminade vs. Yorktown in Game 2 at 2 p.m. and Manhasset vs. Darien in Game 3 at 4 p.m.

The event honors the memory of Jimmy Regan, a Manhasset native and former Chaminade and Duke star who served as a sergeant with the Army Ranger Regiment. He died on Feb. 9, 2007 after an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while he was on combat patrol in northern Iraq.

We’ve got plenty of action on tap before that.

Starting today.

Ward Melville, which is No. 2 in the latest Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse National Power Rankings, hopes to shake off its one-goal loss to Walt Whitman when it hosts West Babylon at 4:15 p.m. Walt Whitman, meanwhile, hosts Harborfields at 7:15 p.m. At 10 a.m., Copiague hosts Bellmore Kennedy. Sachem East plays at Patchogue-Medford at 2 p.m.

In Nassau, Friends hosts Port Washington and Freeport visits Mineola at Hampton Stadium. Both games begin at 4:30 p.m.

In the Hudson Valley, Bronxville hosts Fordham Prep in a 7 p.m. game. In 4:30 p.m. contests, Albertus Magnus visits Briarcliff, Hen Hud is at Clarkstown South and Haldane hosts Pearl River. At 5 p.m., Brewster hosts Rye. In 4:15 p.m. action, Tappan Zee visits North Rockland and Clarkstown North is at New Rochelle.

It’s a light day in Connecticut. Among the handful of matchups on tap, Pomperaug visits Bethel in a 10:30 a.m. game at Ralph DeSantis Field.

As always, be sure to post your thoughts on these matchups as well as any info on the scores and game details.

  1. LI Lax says:

Biggest game in Suffolk tomorrow is Smithtown West-Floyd definitely…I like West by a few goals, but Floyd’s got enough to make this a game and could solidify their contention for a top eight seed with a win.
Connetquot, fresh off their school record 7-0 start, hosts my Northport Tigers…game shouldn’t be that close, but I’m hoping we hang around for a while. My guess is 13-4 TBirds.

Bellmore JFK and Copiague actually was on Saturday, Bellmore JFK won 10-9 in OT

  2. Jericho says:

    WM 12, WB 4

  3. no_style_points says:

Does Rye play Brewster today or not?

It’s on the Section One schedule, but not on laxpower.

  4. slacrosse says:

Yes Rye at Brewster today for a make-up game.

  5. slacrosse says:

    LI LAX, LI Fans

Who are your picks at this point for AA on the Island?

  6. woodstick says:

Can anyone give us spme perspective on Darien and New Caanan? I think most of us are farmiliar with the other teams playing in the triple header Saturday. Records, players going to D1 schools etc.??? Thanks.

  7. Sid vicious says:

Bcliff has to get a win today

  8. LI Lax says:

    Suffolk AAs:

I would think that the following are basically locks
Nicky Galasso- Attack- WI- North Carolina
    Matt Kunkel- Defense- WM- Duke
Kyle Keenan- Attack- Smithtown West- Duke (Junior)
Kieran McArdle- Attack- Connetquot- St. John’s
    Zach Losco- Mid- Hauppauge- Penn

There are three more, and they could go to
    Maxx Meyer- Defense-Hills East- Penn
    Andrew Hogson- Mid- WI- Towson
    Jimmy Ryan- Mid- WM- Colgate
    Alex Zomerfield- Mid- Comsewogue- ?
    Tim Rotanz- Attack- SWR- Freshman
James Pannell- Attack- Smithtown West- Sophomore
    Kevin Teretsky- Attack- Whitman- Junior
Myles Jones- Mid- Whitman- Duke (Junior)
Mike Pellegrino- Defense/LSM- Connetquot- Hopkins (Junior)
Jordan Stevens- Defense- Smithtown West- Cornell
Mike Rooney- Attack- EI- Stony Brook
    Zach Oliveri- Goalie- Connetquot- Junior
    Tommy Cordts- Goalie- Northport- Junior

If I had to guess, I would go with Meyer, Jones, and either Pellegrino or Oliveri, whomever Connetquot decides to nominate

  9. LI Lax says:

As far as Nassau goes, I’m certainly not as familiar, but I would imagine that some of the players in contention would be

Stephen Jalhelka- Defense- Garden City- Harvard (Junior)
Brian Fischer- Defense- Garden City- Harvard (Junior)
Devin Dwyer- Attack- Garden City- Sophomore
Tom Gordon- Mid- Garden City- Hopkins (Junior)
    Drew Belinsky- Mid- Manhasset- Penn
    Chris Cook- Attack- Manhasset- ?
    Brandon Mangan- Attack- Wantagh- Junior
    Kyle Rebman- Attack- Baldwin- Jacksonville
    Christian Kennedy- Mid- CSH- Georgetown
Gavin Ahearn- Attack- South Side- Penn State

These are only potentials and I missed quite a few I am sure (I think they get 9 now)

  10. BigBadBear says:

we do indeed…Sid? who could you be? perhaps a LSDM that used his stick too much?

  11. Sec1 says:

    Woodstick

I have been to one NC game good solid team, they have a few D1 players. St Anthonys by 4. Darien very good I saw part of their game in PA, I get to see them a couple times every yr great program, very good goalie and more than a few D1 players. This game should tell Sett where they really are, I like Darien by 1.

  12. slacrosse says:

    Sett by 4-5 over Darien.

  13. LI Lax says:

St. A’s will win by 4 or more. Manhasset probably in a close one…if Darien wins this one they are certainly legit, but I think Darien supporters have been overrating their comeback against Stoga. Stoga isn’t the type of team that blows people out, they only won 5-4 against Emmaus, 6-2 against a down Landon team, etc…Manhasset by 2 or 3.

  14. no_style_points says:

    thank you slacrosse

  15. Sid vicious says:

    Malarchuk the king of lax

  16. BigBadBear says:

gotcha sid, cya at the game

  17. lax maven says:

The list fror AA’s looked good for both Nassau and Suffolk publics. Last year Schreiber – Princeton- from St. A’s was the only representative from the Catholic schools and he is as much of a lock as anyone to make it again. Also from St. A’s,Schroeder- Navy, and Danselgio – UVA- have outside shots. From Chaminade Himmler- Princeton, and the two monster defenseman, Urbank – Georgetown and Earhart- Maryland both are close to 6’4 and can move.

  18. WhaleBelt says:

i dont think devin dywer gets AA this yr

  19. BigBadBear says:

Hey Joe, can you remind me how Section 1 is choosing play off teams? As the Leaques are all mixed with A, B and C teams….

  20. LI Lax says:

    WhaleBelt,

I agree with you, I was just throwing out potential names in Nassau. Think he is #4 on GC as far as AA goes.

  21. laxr says:

LI Lax, I see your point, but judging by the comments of Conestoga’s coach, as well as those of a presumably knowledgeable pennsylvania lacrosse fan on laxpower, it appears that Conestoga played the best they had all season against Darien (at least for most of the game). The laxpower commenter said that Conestoga looked twice as good against Darien as they did against Emmaus.

If this is true, then it would appear that even a top team like Haverford (who beat Conestoga on a last second goal earlier this season) would have had a tough time beating the Pioneers on Saturday.

  22. LI Lax says:

    Connetquot 16, Northport 9 (McArdle with 5 and 2)
    WM 15, West Bab 4
    WI 12, Bay Shore 4
    Whitman 17, Longwood 8
    EI 18, North Bab 3

  23. lacrossegeek says:

    Rye over Brewster 11-4

  24. LI Lax says:

    Smithtown West 10, Floyd 7

  25. LI Lax says:

This sets up two monster games on Wednesday in Suffolk D1…

    Ward Melville at Connetquot
    West Islip at Smithtown West

my early picks for these games are 8-7 WM and 11-9 WI, but these could change.

  26. Joe Lombardi says:

LI Lax – What’s your early read on East Hampton (7-0) vs. Hauppauge a week from today? Both teams have beaten defending Long Island Class B champ Sayville. Hauppauge’s lone loss is to Comsewogue 8-6.

Also, to answer Bear’s question (Comment #19), because there is no power league, the seedings process will be basically what was used for Section 1 hockey this season. You get points based on the winning percentage of your opponents. For instance, if you beat a team with a winning percentage of .750 or more, you get four points.

  27. Old Rugger says:

LI Lax or should I say LI13. Like the WI score and agree the WM point spread but think 7-6 in OT. Is the Northport goalie that good?

  28. LI Lax says:

    Joe,

East Hampton has some guys that are putting up some pretty big stats against a horribly weak schedule, including the brother of Notre Dame middie Zach Brenneman (Tyler)…they can probably score on Hauppauge but I doubt their defense will be able to stop Losco and Co. East Hampton still will have to beat Huntington before the Hauppauge game, and they shouldn’t overlook that given the low quality of competition they’ve faced so far. I think they squeak by the Blue Devils, but Hauppauge hands them their first loss by 3 or 4 goals.

    Old Rugger,

Tommy Cordts is extremely good…we gave up 16 today, but the defense in front of him is so young that usually it is not his fault. He keeps us in many games single-handedly, and it’s between him and Oliveri for top goalie in Suffolk.

  29. slacrosse says:

Good to see Rye finally get a win, playing solidly for 2 periods after two pretty trying, tough, topsy turvy losses against Jay and PV.

Two of Brewster’s goals came from rye kids slipping on the grass field.

Lenihan at goalie played very confidently and Rye’s soph FO kid standing in for McCormack did a real good job.

Of course Rye faces another really tough game vs Somers on Th.

  30. ichaBRO CHAYne says:

    any score on Bxville FP?

  31. ctlax says:

New Canaan is good this year. The offense is highly balanced and very deep right now, although if there’s one guy you’ve gotta lock down it’s junior midfielder Joe Costigan going to UNC. The defense is very experienced and while not outrageously talented, plays very very well as a unit. The goalie, Granito, is also very good. Still, St. Anthony’s has too much talent – New Canaan can make it a game, but St. Anthony’s should be able to win by about 5 goals.

Darien – Manhasset will be very close. Darien, without Dysenchuk last year fell to Manhasset, but I think Darien should beat Manhasset this year. Their defense, with Andrew West in goal is superb. Watch out for Case Matheis as well – the kid scored 5 against Manhasset last year and recently had 3 against Conestoga. The kid is a player.

  32. dmoney says:

Fordham Prep beats Bronxville 8-7 in the second overtime.

  33. slacrosse says:

    ichaBRO CHAYne

FP beat Bville 8-7 in double OT

  34. ulax says:

Joe, you should post the score board central the day before so people can get in some predictions and talk the night before the game.

some big match ups tomorrow that need some talking about

  35. ichaBRO CHAYne says:

Thanks dmoney & slacrosse, what’s the consensus opinion on the Rams in the area? Obviously, despite previous dominance, they have fallen behind Iona Prep, let alone the LI CHSAA teams, but with a win over the moderately touted Broncos and with a scehdule that includes Chaminade, St. Ant’s and Gtown Prep surely they deserve some respect…

  36. slacrosse says:

    ichaBRO CHAYne

Yeah all the press has been on IP and I had just assumed that Bville, a pretty decent team would win. dont know much about FP. Seems like they have no significant wins and a big loss vs IP.

  37. ichaBRO CHAYne says:

The press is on IP and rightfully so…as an FP alum, it’s just tough seeing the transition from 24-1 scores in favor of FP over IP to the recent Gael dominance, but IP has done great things with their program. I realize the stink that was made by the CHSAA expansion and the weakening of the premier teams strength of schedule, along with Sect.1’s fear of losing players to IP or FP, but this league has the potential to truly grow in strength. Not necessarily to the level of the MIAA or IAC, but if IP and FP can draw more premier players with academics and recruiting exposure through better SOS, the CHSAA could become a renowned high school league. I’m fishing for opinions on the “recruiting” ability of the preps and the potential repercussions on both the CHSAA and Section 1. As both Chaminade and St. A’s already draw significant talent from neighboring publics, would increased league strength increase the draw of privates?

  38. gimme a stick says:

The Fordham Bronxville game was very good, close throughout. FP got very good play from faceoff man Matt Casella, close defender Tom Whalen, and a great game from soph goalie Conor Gowan, who made a couple of huge saves in a furious 4th qtr, and the first OT. Bronxville’s standouts were middies #10 McCormack(?) and #2 and attackmen #15 and #8, on D #18 looked good…sorry not sure of the names.

FP is a bit down this year compared to last year, losing a terrific goalie like Chris Moffa, and a couple of great middies hurts. They are getting contributions from sophs and starting a frosh on D. They also lost a very good soph attackman to an injury. IP has their number at the moment, but if they continue to play as they did last night they should be competitive in every game until this team matures.

  39. Gonna Say says:

Looks like Rye is primed to beat Somers on Thurs. Scary to think after Saturday Somers will be 1-7

  40. mike B. says:

Sedding for class B because all new york teams count

    1.jj
    2.greeley
    3. brewster
    4. hen hud
    5. somers

  41. BigBadBear says:

thanks Joe…that playoff structure will be quite interesting as we progress further into the season…”good” loses won’t count, and you will be rooting for all the teams you beat to win out the remainder of their schedule..so just to start the discussion going..is Somers in trouble?

  42. mike B. says:

Somers and JJ might meet in Semi!!

  43. Doid23 says:

What a stupid playoff seeding process. It only works if you play a balanced schedule, why not just use record vs. Section 1 B schools? JJ-Somers in the semis would be ridiculous.

  44. Sec 1 Lax Fan says:

I guess Jo-Jo had bigger shoes to fill than one realized. Somers has tough schedule Could get ugly if things do not turn around fast.

Traditional power Sec 1 down across the board this year providing opportunities for new faces/names during playoffs though usual suspects generally round into form come late May given seasoning from tougher out of county schedule and emerging contributions from young talent (i.e. coaching).

C may have most parity – more than A and B which have steep drop offs after top 5.

IMO – move away from school enrollment and go to strict geography for three leagues; Lower County, Middle County/Rockland, Northern West/Putnam/Dutchess(?) Counties.

Teams only need approx 15 players so school size is not as big a deal in Lax (unlike football), or New Ro, Scarsdale, North Rockland would dominate.

Better rivalry games, less travel. Can still play Non-league inter-county games along with Fairfield CT., Privates and Secs 8/9 (if you really want to…)

  45. BigBadBear says:

and Greely’s got trouble too..only one win so far…they can’t be second in B

  46. slacrosse says:

    ichaBRO CHAYne,

Yes I previously said that given no more power leagues, elimination of some traditional games and IP/FP playing Cham and St. A’s that would not be surprised if some kid and his parents in southern/mid Westchester who were dedicated to their kid playing the best competition, might be moved to go to IP/FP.
