This is a unique Saturday in that many of the premier programs from the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region will be playing outside the area today.

More on that in a minute.

But if you are looking for a marquee matchup around these parts, we recommend a couple of games to check out.

For starters, West Islip, winners of three Class A state titles in the last four years and the preseason top-ranked team in the nation, squares off against New Jersey power Ridgewood, which picked up a 9-7 win over 2009 Bergen County champion Bergen Catholic, at Ridgewood’s Maple Field at 1 p.m.

Putnam Valley, which denied Rye in its bid for what would have been a fifth straight Section 1 Class C title last year, visits the Garnets in a 7:15 p.m. showdown at Nugent Stadium.

Walt Whitman, fresh off a stunning 11-10 win against nationally ranked Ward Melville, hosts Harborfields on its turf field at 7:15 p.m. Also under the lights, Plainedge hosts New Milford at 7:30 p.m. At 2 p.m., Sachem East visits Patchogue-Medford. Carey visits Wantagh at noon.In morning action on Long Island, Elmont visits Jericho and Cheshire Academy  visits Lynbrook at 10 a.m. and Cold Spring Harbor hosts Mineola at 11 a.m.

In Connecticut, Staples, off to a 3-0 start that begin with an overtime win against defending FCIAC champion Ridgefield, faces a Greenwich team fresh off an OT win of its own — vs. Wilton. That game will be played at noon at Staples Stadium. Among other games on tap, New Canaan visits Norwalk at Testa Field at 1 p.m.

In addition to Put Valley-Rye in the Hudson Valley, defending Section 1 Class B champion Somers is in need of a win after losses to St. Anthony’s, Mahopac and most recently John Jay. The Tuskers host Iona Prep at 4 p.m. The teams have split their meetings the last two years.

Also at 4 p.m., Nanuet visits Ossining. Elsewhere, unbeaten Arlington hosts Nyack in a 7 p.m. game.

In another 7 p.m. game, Eastchester hosts Sleepy Hollow at Haindl Field in Eastchester. Proceeds of the event benefit Autism Speaks, a group dedicated to raising awareness of Autism as well as funding research.

Westlake, Peekskill and Pelham are joining the host Tigers in the Croton Tournament at Spencer Field, with action starting at noon. Hastings is also hosting its tournament.  Briarcliff hosts Fox Lane at noon. John F. Kennedy Catholic, which picked up its first win under new co-coaches Nick and Vin Savastano in its last game, plays at Tappan Zee at 1 p.m. In a 2 p.m. game, Lakeland/Panas hosts Shaker at Lakeland High School.

Now, to today’s big event. If you’ve noticed your favorite team has not been mentioned yet, chances are it’s in Haverford, Pa., today.

That’s the site of the second annual Checking for Cancer Classic.

That’s the sight of a 12-team tournament in which one-third of the teams are ranked among the Top 25 in the nations. Pretty impressive.

Headlining the event are games between Yorktown and Garden City, Darien and Conestoga (Pa.), and Fairfield Prep and Delbarton (N.J.).

Here’s the complete schedule:

10 a.m.
Haverford School (Pa.) vs. Chatham (NJ), Stadium field
Radnor (Pa.) vs. Hatboro-Horsham (Pa.), Class of ‘75 field

12 p.m.
Georgetown Prep (Md.) vs. La Salle College High (Pa.), Stadium field
Yorktown vs. Garden City, Class of ‘75 field

2 p.m.
Conestoga (Pa.) vs. Darien, Stadium field
Delbarton (NJ) vs. Fairfield Prep, Class of ‘75 field

As the name suggests, the tournament is for a good cause and is the brainchild of Haverford School coach and AD John Nostrant, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer a year and a half ago and is now considered cancer free.

For more on the event, check out this report from phillylacrosse.com.

It’s a busy Saturday, for sure. So be sure to not only weigh in with your thoughts on these matchups but post any info on the scores and game details.

  1. Syracuse says:

I think until Yorktown’s offense finds itself, or other players step up and take the pressure off Interlicchio, games like Saturday vs. Garden City will be hard to win.

I’m going: Garden City 7, Yorktown 4 … But I won’t be totally floored if Yorktown finds a way. A week off to study GC is not necessarily a bad thing.

Enjoy the games today everyone. I’ll try to post Town-GC updates.

  2. LI Lax says:

    Predictions:

    GC 8, Yorktown 4
    Cheshire 11, Lynbrook 10
    Delbarton 10, Fairfield Prep 8
    Stoga 10, Darien 5
    WI 14, Ridgewood 6

  3. LI Lax says:

Another interesting game is Floyd and New Fairfield…I don’t really know much about New Fairfield, but I would imagine they have the edge against Floyd, which handled New Milford pretty easily last year but isn’t quite as good this year after losing middie Steve Murphy (Notre Dame)…they still can score, though, with Luke Miller and Ryan Payton.

  4. Back Jauer says:

Does anyone know the time of the WI/ Ridgewood game today?

  5. GreenWhite says:

It says right here in Joe’s story that GC and Town play at noon. The times/matchups for all the games in Haverford are also listed.

  6. re:lax says:

Should be some good tests for the local teams. Most interested to see how Darien does. Everyone seems to think that they are going to be down a bit this year. I actually think that they will be improved over last year’s team. Lesser egos, much more cohesive team play. Will learn a lot over the next week.

  7. Joe Lombardi says:

    Back Jauer –

Starting time for West Islip at Ridgewood is at 1 p.m today.

  8. Lilax23 says:

    Any score updates from Haverford?

  9. Jericho says:

Lilax23 – None of the teams from HV/LI/CT play at Haverford till noon. You have time to go get a second cup of coffee.

  10. Beach Lax says:

all i know is it took a near perfect game for jj to beat a banged up somers team by two goals at jj. you better believe i like somers to come back strong. who wouldn’t?

  11. Joe Lombardi says:

Since some folks missed this in the main body of this post, I’m repeating it here.

    Here’s the complete Haverford schedule:

Yorktown vs. Garden City, Class of ‘75 field

    2 p.m.
Conestoga (Pa.) vs. Darien, Stadium field
Delbarton (NJ) vs. Fairfield Prep, Class of ‘75 field

  12. Laximus says:

I know alot of people here are very anti-rankings. We have talked about Inside Lacrosse’s national rankings. Here are the first state rankings of the season. Nothing jumps out at me but that’s just me.

  23. Young Warrior says:

In Ct – Staples leads Greenwich 3-2 half

  24. Sec1 says:

    11-2 half

  25. Syracuse says:

Wow. I stand corrected and offer a mea culpa to everyone. I feel shame and will come wash all your cars as a peace offering.

  26. just a fan says:

    wow….UGLY

  27. GC Lax says:

About time our offense had the kind of game it is clearly capable of especially when we have been dominating time of possession.

  28. LAXman says:

It looks as though Long Island is far superior to section 1 this year, and Garden City may very well be the best team on the Island. With that said I didn’t see this coming.

  29. Sec1 says:

Can’t clear, Cant win F/O can’t pick up GB

  30. Syracuse says:

    LAXman,

It’s no different than any other year. And now Town is building for a few years from now. Woodstick Classic will be an absolute war.

  31. Beach Lax says:

somers played a LI power much tougher than anyone else – tied with st. a’s in 4th qtr. another reason to like somers vs jj in round 2 and vs town.

  32. Sec1 says:

3rd and 4th lines in for Town

  33. Sec1 says:

    12-2 end of 3rd

  34. Sec1 says:

GC 13-2 this team way better than Ward Melville

  35. ballerstatus says:

    i told u so…

  36. Syracuse says:

    ballerstatus,

Props to you man. I just hope no one says the words “long bus ride.” I might throw up.

  37. just a fan says:

Town looking forward to Put Valley in a big way…

  38. Joe Lombardi says:

Garden City’s performance today, and Ward Melville’s loss to Walt Whitman makes the question “Who’s No. 1 among Long Island teams?” a real good one.

Be sure to weigh in with your thoughts in the poll.

Ward Melville is No. 2 in the latest Inside Lacrosse national rankings. Also of note, Manhasset, off its big win over John Jay, has cracked the rankings for the first time this season – and in a big way, checking in at No. 10.

You can check them out here:

  39. slacrosse says:

Wow, La Costa Canyon (23) beat Amador Valley (Ca)!!!! And plays Los Alimitos –

    Please!!

  40. Lax4Fun says:

Unfortunally I think it will be another disapointing loss for the Green & White 13-6 Oh how the mighty have fallen. But you have to give it to coach Marr and the rest of the Huskers they play a TOUGH schedule atleat 7 teams Nationally ranked. . Let’s hope they learn from theese games and carry the knowledge gained into the sec 1 playoffs and beyond.

    P.S. Anyone know the score?

  41. Joe Lombardi says:

Here is an update from Haverford with final scores of completed games and a rundown of the remaining games:

    10 a.m.
    Haverford School (Pa.) 14, Chatham (N.J.) 7
    Radnor (Pa.) 8, Hatboro-Horsham (Pa.) 7

    Noon
La Salle College High (Pa.) 10, Georgetown Prep (Md.) 8
    Garden City 14, Yorktown 3

    2 p.m.
Conestoga (Pa.) vs. Darien, Stadium field
Delbarton (NJ) vs. Fairfield Prep, Class of ‘75 field

  42. Sec1 says:

Yeah there all going to Hop game

  43. Lax Novice says:

Perhaps someone there can take a break from the Yorktown pity party to pass along a score from Darien – Conestoga and/or Delbarton – Prep? Thanks.

  44. D-PAC says:

PV must be licking their chops for Tuesdays showdown with Town. Fitzgerald should score 6, especially if they don’t double. Curious to see how Town bounces back for PV and Pac on Thursday.

  45. LI Lax says:

Lynbrook beats Cheshire 11-8 this morning

  46. Mr. Dutchman says:

Wow – very impressed with that Kennedy program. They were only down 3-1 to our boys at TZ. 5-2 going into 4th. Final 10-4. Kids hustling all over the field. Got to give them credit today.

  47. laxing says:

good game for GC.. tough one for yorktown to swallow.

and beach lax- not sure how you can favor somers over jj in round 2 when jj beat them the first time? I know they played better against the long island team than jj and yorktown did, but that does not take away the game they lost to jj.

  48. Section 8 says:

    Ridgefield 7 Lawrenceville 3

  49. CT Lax says:

    New Canaan 14, Norwalk 4

    Staples 7, Greenwich 5

  50. IPpy Lax says:

    Somers 1, Iona Prep 0 after 1

  51. ctlax says:

Can anyone shed some light on Ridgefield’s win over Lawrenceville, Staples-Greenwich, and what’s going on between Darien and Conestoga?

  52. IslandLaxpert says:

    WI 10, Ridgewood 5

  53. JustAFan says:

L-ville web site says that Ridgefield score is real. CT getting interesting. Staples much better than expected, Greenwich, Wilton down, Darien appears to be the cream of the crop. New Canaan still untested. Maybe Ridgefield is okay, though appears LVille very weak this year. Prep also weak this year.

  54. I-95 Lax says:

I heard Darien was down big at the half – I think 5-0. Didn’t get a final yet.

  55. IPpy Lax says:

    Somers 3, IP 2 … HT

  56. LI Lax says:

Anyone have a score on Floyd-New Fairfield?

  57. slacrosse says:

    D-Pac,

Yeah,in fact maybe PV will rest Fitzgerald and other 1st team kids for tonight’s game with Rye? Why waste 1st team on an “easy” game. Maybe that way he’ll score even more then 6 on Town?

  58. Cards Lax says:

Staples has a few good poles and a solid midfielder in Kip #20. FCIAC is going to be a tight race. GHS is still not playing well. If they wake up offensively they will be tough to stop for anyone. They had no clue against NC in their first game and are now 1-2 in their last 3 games their 2 losses by a total of 3 goals. GHS has loads of weapons, they’re trying to sort out who their top 9 are on offense. Dickson, Dodd, Dunster, Koorbush, and plenty of poles with all of those named with DI potential or already signed DI.

  59. Joe Lombardi says:

Here are the final scores of the 2 p.m. games in Haverford:

    Conestoga (Pa.) 10, Darien 6
    Fairfield Prep 10, Delbarton (N.J.) 2

  60. slacrosse says:

    Cards Lax,

Only saw Staples once at the pre-season scrimmages at GHS and thought they were very good. I picked them to up there with Darien and New Caanan. So far so good on that one.

  61. IPpy Lax says:

Big 3rd quarter for Iona… Gaels rally to go ahead 7-4 after 3.

  62. IPpy Lax says:

Final… IP 7, Somers 6 … This is the 2nd time in 3 years IP has beaten Somers…

  63. slacrosse says:

Please nothing against IP but they are rebuilding, at best. Somers is not (despite loss of Jo). They are loaded!

With the # of Somers’ experienced and skilled players, if they can’t beat IP, then something is VERY wrong with the Huskers (I ranked them #1 in Section pre-season).

Wow! Did they get hit with a lot of penalties again?

  64. HV Lax says:

slacrosse, I wasn’t there but I agree. This Iona team lost to Chaminade 13-5 or something. They are well coached and have some athletes but nowhere near their level of talent last year. Think about it… If Somers hadn’t had a miracle comeback vs. Greeley they’d be 0-5. It will be interesting to read the insights of Somers folks as to what’s going on.

slacrosse – How do you think Rye-PV will shake out tonight?

  65. slacrosse says:

    HV Lax

Agree on Somers. I’m really scratching my head on that one.

Rye/PV. I think the game should be close and could go either way. Would have said that even if Rye had beaten BH.

Of course I’m hoping McCormack will play.

Also assuming Rye will be extra psyched to come back strong after that tough BH loss.

  66. Rebel Yell says:

    LP 13, Shaker 6
    Caffrey 4-3
    Prunty 2-3

Murphy Cup coming up pretty soon – May 1!

  67. mike B. says:

it just goes to show you that section 1 is down this year. JJ barley beat Yorktown and town gets killed by garden city. JJ beats somers pretty easy and then jj gets destroyed by manhasset. Iona beats Somers and Rye loses to Byram Hills. Who ever wins the section will go down to Nisky or GC

  68. river_brat says:

    Ossining 13 Nanuet 8

Not even that close. O had a 3 min. non-releaseable against their goalie and the backup guy gave up three quick ones.

Ugly game, Nanuet is a bunch of hackers.

    Beat down.

  69. RyeGuy says:

    Rye 3, PV 0 1st q

  70. LI Lax says:

Floyd wins big over New Fairfield, 14-6, another impressive win for LI

  71. 1proudBro says:

There is no leadership on Somers…they are in trouble!
Someone needs to take over that offense, calm down, and run plays. Practice the basics (passing, catching, and shooting) Believe you belong at the top and start playing like it.
BH looks good…should be a good game Tues. if Somers can get back to their roots. A big win against BH should boost the confidence and get them right back on track to defend their title.
    Good Luck boys!

  72. HV Lax says:

    4-0 rye midway thru second

  73. Cradler says:

    Fox Lane 11, B’cliff 4
Conor Morris 3-0, Cameron Stephens 15 svs for Foxes

  74. PV Lax says:

4-1 rye at the half. tigers staying in it. need to get the offence going

  75. PV Lax says:

The offence has come alive! Wild rally by PV! Tigers now lead Rye 7-4 after 3…

  76. Doid23 says:

Ouch. This weekend and last. And the one before that.

I think we all realize that Section 1 is not going to match up with LI, plain and simple. I, for one, plan on enjoying what seems to be a parity filled year where anyone can take the Section 1 titles. Because that’s all we’ve got.

Town losing didn’t surprise me, obviously the spread did. Somers losing to IP stunned me, didn’t see that coming. Delbarton looks like they’re having a tough year as well.

  77. LacrosseInsider says:

Where is Beachlax when you need him????? How do you feel about that IP team??? Let’s hear about all of Somers injuries and players not playing….come on you must be out there somewhere!

  78. mike B. says:

Ok listen to this one. Somers may not even get the 2nd seed behind jj. they could be 3 or maybe even 4 because all ny losses are counted against you. JJ and Somers could meet in the semis

  79. PV Lax says:

    Final – Put Valley 9, Rye 5.

3rd win in a row by PV over Rye!

Bring on Byram Hills in the Class C final!!

  80. Route 35 says:

With about 30% of the season concluded here are a few observations and predictions for the lower Hudson valley.
Section 1 is not as strong as in the past 2 years. The section will improve as the season progresses but so will LI, Upstate and everywhere else. If any Section 1 team makes it to the state semis they will need a big game and big upset to move on. No need to panic, these things are cyclical. Good feeder systems and young teams equate to Section improving in 2011 and beyond…keep the faith.
Somers will figure it out. As we know, Jo Jo could end up being one of the best players in the history of Section 1. His 5 groundballs, 3-4 goals, aggressive rides, in each game are sorely missed. Somers 2010 is not unlike Jay the year after Bocklet departed. They need to adjust and will. Look for them to get hot late and win 5 in a row. According to the coach (article in the Journal News) they aren’t worried about the physical play resulting in 5-6 penalties a game. Physical is one thing, slashes to the head, trips from behind, and late hits are another. More lacrosse and less football and they will be fine.
Yorktown, like Jay vs Set, did not show up for a statement game against GC. Even so, other than the Jay loss, Yorktown will not lose a game is Section 1. Many new players on the field and all will be tested and ready for the playoffs. They win the Murphy Cup by 2,
Mahopac is better than expected but will lose to LP and Town. They are good but not that good. Beating Somers looked huge a week ago, not so much now. They will have a great W/L record but they are still not challenging themselves with difficult out of section games. They have 4-5 great players. You need 6-7 great players to win the section.
Arlington will continue to beat teams that I was not aware had lacrosse programs. They will lose to the top section 1 teams and in some cases by double digits. Jay had to turn the scoreboard off in their pre-season scrimmage. They will be very good in 3 years. Props to the Admirals for scheduling a tough second half.
Ossining same as Arlington. Better than people expected but people weren’t expecting much. Program is building though. If they maintain interest and get a few of the football players to convert they will be a school to watch in 3 years.
Rye has a lot of good athletes and strong midfield play. The incredible comeback and heartbreaking loss to Jay had lingering effects versus Byram Hills. Cole not playing was one of those effects. They will compete come playoff time. PV giving them trouble tonight.
Byram Hills, I am not convinced they are for real yet. The Rye win was one of their biggest in along time. Time will tell and so will the Somers game this week. Somers will be out for blood coming of multiple losses.
John Jay team and coach still working on systems, slides, and scoring. Bocklet joining the coaching staff will help with more offense. All teams improve as the season moves along but this team good improve further and faster then others due to talent and coaching. They will need some upsets to go deep in the state tourney assuming they get out of the section. First things first.
Looking forward to seeing PV, B ville, P Ville and others have solid seasons. More winning programs in the section is a good thing. The entire section needs to step it up a notch or two (possible three) to win against LI teams.

  81. daslax says:

As a somers insider… Dont worry we’ll be around come the end of the season.

  82. stats says:

In extension of Route 35’s terrific post above…

With all the talk about parity here is some stuff to chew on.

The Byram Hills defense is allowing a spectacular 4.6 goals/gm.

Last year, Eastchester didn’t get their 4th win until game 7. They are now 4-1.

Last year, Ossining didn’t win their 3rd game until game 8. They are now 3-1.

The Arlington offense is averaging 15.75 goals/game. But tonight they are playing their highest rated opponent to date, Nyack (79.1). Their other wins have come against teams that rate 78.7, 78.2, 72.7 and a dismal 62.9. Their schedule firms up in May.

John Jay still has zero losses against Section One teams. Yorktown has one…John Jay.

Last year, Somers averaged 8.4 goals/gm on offense. This year their average for the first five is 7.8. Their defense averaged 6.8 goals/gm allowed and this year they are giving up an average of 9.2. See, it’s not all about JoJo. Hmmm.

Wappingers started the season 0-3, but are 4-1 in their last five for a total of 4-4. That’s perseverance, but they finish the season with Lakeland, Brewster, Arlington and Mahopac.

Brewster defense is averaging 8.8 goals/gm against, but take out their opening day loss 18-8 to JJ and their average is 7.

L/P quietly went 2-1 versus teams from Washington.

There are still 5 teams that have yet to win a game.

At the start of today’s action, there were three undefeated teams; PV (2-0), Arlington (4-0) and P’ville (4-0). Putnam V has already won (now 3-0).

Against Long Island teams, Section One is 0 for April I think. lol.

If the playoffs were to start today: lol.

Yorktown would be the #4 seed in A.

The bottom half of the B seedings would have four teams who last year were in the top four. (Remember, league games have yet to be played.)

Kennedy would play Pleasantville in C.

  83. somerslax says:

somers is playing terrible. there defense not so much. but the offense is rushing to much and have players trying to do it by themselves to much they need to slow it down and play a team game

  84. Dutchess Lax says:

Arlington 11, Nyack 3 … Another decisive win for the Admirals … 4 players with 2 goals each.

  85. no_style_points says:

The Somers faithful sound like Yankees fans in years when they don’t win, “Things are fine, we’re just getting going, it’ll work out, we’re okay…”

The fact is they are what their record says they are, they have a tough schedule and they have serious work to do.

7.8 goals per game on offense will not get it done.

Somebody please call Arlington and tell them they are supposed to be playing the varsity teams from those towns, not the modified. lol.

  86. Oracle says:

    no_style_points,

bingo….love whats going on in Arlington…someone posted earlier – i need to disagree – they are more than 3 years away from competing in the quasi power league…doing all the right stuff, 3 times the student body of everyone else – but it will take longer. Yorktown lived it 20 years ago, John Jay did it 10 years ago, Somers thinks its doing it – but we’ll see.

If you are serious about predicting the future…. track youth teams….a decent indicator, barometer. Arllington isn’t ready at the younger levels. Intent is there….Numbers are there. Here’s what’s missing….Real coaching at the youth level. Why is Manhasset a perennial power at the “C” level – coaches that played the sport giving back. Yorktown has had this off and on for years. John Jay recently. Arlington not so much, lots of non-lacrosse guys figuring it out, often confusing it with football.

Go watch a John Jay youth game at the “A” level….A guy who played D1 – giving back….Yorktown has had this for decades. That’s what Arlington will need to jump to the next level….Not trying to be a fire-starter, I have just followed this for many years – and its my opinion, not any better than anyone else on these boards. Yes athletes and talent trump all this stuff we debate – but you need solid fundamentals.

  87. Oracle says:

Syracuse, admit it…..Town (and Section 1) not ready for prime time.. 14 goals allowed – most GC registered this year. you actually thought town might pull this one out. Is Town going to lose to L/P (gasp), Mahopac (double gasp) — we’ll see….fire away at this post. I wouldn’t bet against Town – but admit it you really don’t know if this team is for real….Come on…admit it.

  88. LI Lax says:

I know how much all of you hate rankings, and you’ll probably call me an LI homer, but here’s a best guess at a regional top 25 at this point from me.

    1. Garden City
    2. West Islip
    3. Chaminade
    4. Manhasset
    5. St. Anthony’s
    6. Ward Melville
    7. Cold Spring Harbor
    8. Connetquot
    9. Shoreham-Wading River
    10. Darien
    11. Brunswick
    12. Wantagh
    13. Comsewogue
    14. John Jay
    15. East Islip
    16. Smithtown West
    17. New Canaan
    18. Sachem North
    19. Staples
    20. Yorktown
    21. Eastport-South Manor
    22. Baldwin
    23. Fairfield Prep
    24. Division
    25. Mahopac

  89. Oracle says:

    LI Lax, love the effort….

    a few comments…

    John Jay a little higher
Darien a little lower (JJ and Darien were relatively even in a scrimmage)
    Yorktown who knows
    Mahopac too high
    you missed Lakeland/Panas

put them one spot ahead of Yorktown 🙂

  90. LI Lax says:

L/P was pretty much #26…Pac has done more so far, they had pretty comparable scores against Mercer Island and Pac has beaten Somers and taken a very good EI team to overtime…L/P hasn’t beaten anyone good in New York yet. Beat Yorktown, then we’ll talk (even if Town is down, I’ll believe it when I see it with L/P)

  91. bwlax says:

oracle, scrimmages aren’t always good measuring sticks. if you are going to judge darien in relation to other teams based on scrimmages (such as john jay), then, how do u have them behind SWR, a team they absolutely carved up (i believe it was 7-1 w/ starters after just a 25 minute running half). They also played WI pretty tight in another scrimmage (i believe it was 1 or 2 goals).

As for the games that actually count, they drove up to albany and beat Niskayuna 9-2. Then, down in Haverford, after a rough start they made a good run on Conestoga in the second half (who had not taken their foot of the pedal) to change an 8-0 third quarter deficit into a 9-6 one late in the fourth quarter. Judging from some of the coach’s (Conestoga) comments, that was the best his team had played thus far — I would put them at the very least on an equal footing with Garden City.

  92. LacrosseInsider says:

Does anyone know where Deiana is going to school to play football? He must of signed with someone by now. I was very impressed by him in the Jay game, other then a few stupid fouls by being over aggressive, he was super fast and had a few nice goals. I’m sure he could have gotten a nice lax offer as well…

  93. HV Lax says:

Good job with the rankings, LI Lax. I think they were more than fair. Yes, some people don’t like them, but the fact is that’s usually because their team isn’t in them. It’s really that simple.

Couple of questions. Can you shed some light on Connetquot? I heard they were unbeaten, but who have they played? Any other info would also be appreciated.

  94. Laxit says:

I was just wondering – with all the up and down teams in Section One now and no real consistency other than JJ, who are going to be the 9 AA’s if this trend of teams beating up on one another keeps up? Thoughts?

  95. Beach Lax says:

somers is a marked team that other teams now all wanna make their season by beating. that’s been one of the reasons for the start along with injuries (bello did not play vs iona prep). this week is huge w/ byram, rye and lp. the turnaround starts right here, right now. play hard, play smart, have fun boys.

  96. congrats_to_all says:

Congrats to everybody here on what it I’m is sure the best thread of the season so far! This is good reading and the points are focused!

  97. slacrosse says:

    LI Lax

    Hey, where’s whitman?

Great effort. I’m VERY down on national rankings where teams dont play ome another and you have no idea of the competition.

But have always said regional rankings like yours make a lot more sense as people know most of the teams and key ones have played one another.

Staples higher, Jay lower . Not sure that any other Sect 1 teams belong on the list right now. Darien a bit higher based upon a close game with Stoga, a great team.

  98. BigBadBear says:

I personally would like to see the NY teams broken down by the state classifications..as for C, no Section 1 team appears to have the overall team depth to handle any of the LI teams..but I am impressed with PV, they have to be on top of the Sec 1 rankings…they are small, but are true laxers, they played both Bronxville and Rye, much bigger more physical teams and just handled them. Interesting also that the NYS writers poll has P’ville the top C team in the region

  99. gimme a stick says:

There was nothing in the paper on the Eastchester vs. Sleepy Hollow game last night so here are a few things…Eastchester 11 Sleepy 8, in a well played entertaining game. Sleepy was led by Dennis Maloy’s 3 goals and 2 from attackman John Bucci, who looked very good running the Horseman’s offense. Both teams looked quick and athletic, Sleepy a bit bigger, but that is the case with most games due to Eastchester’s youth. The Eagles had three hat tricks last night, Tom Cirillo, Rob Carinci, and Dave Massi and got solid play from close defender Guiseppe Delucca and face off man Matt Gendusa. Eagle goalie Joe Arcidiacono and Sleepy goalie Jay Ramierez both made big saves at big times.

Sleepy started strong going up 2-0, Eastchester than rallied and played a great second quarter that featured a couple of great clears and fast break goals. Sleepy rallied late in the third but Eastchester was able to hold on and good D and time killing possesions sealed the win in the last quarter. Eastchester is now 5-1.

  100. slacrosse says:

Congrats to PV on a good, solid win over Rye. Impressed with the speed of their middies and goalie who made some really impressive saves.

Rye was driving on all cylinders in all games phases (O, D, Transition, Goalie) in the 1st half and thought they would definitely come out on top. Rye up 4-1 at half and then PV outscored them 8-1!! Rye was making it too easy for PV’s good middies to get free and shoot.

Aside from PV’s great effort, Rye seemed to then lose it in all phases (except FO where Cole dominated but was still obviously hurting). Rye could not convert numbers of man-up situations (PV did) and in one 2 man-up play when Rye could have really closed the gap, Rye scored once and then let PV score man down!

Believe Rye’s priority needs are mostly on D where this season they have a number of younger/newer players that are still developing with various levels of experience.

  101. ffclax says:

    LILax,

As an FCIAC parent, I rarely get to watch private school games. Yesterday however, I was able to drive down to Greenwich to see the Brunswick vs. Hotchkiss games. After watching, I have no doubt in my mind that Brunswick should be, at the least, in your top 6. They thoroughly dismantled a previously undefeated Hotchkiss team by a score of 15-3 and played nearly flawless lacrosse. It was truly a pleasure to watch this fast, physical style of lacrosse.

  102. Doid23 says:

LI Lax: Good rankings. I agree with another poster, I HATE national rankings (especially IL), but like regional rankings. You’ll never get rankings to be perfect, heck, even tournaments don’t necessarily identify the best team over a season, but at least you can connect some dots. Well done.

  103. WCLax says:

Eastchester off to the best start in the programs history? I realize they haven’t really played “anyone,” but that’s a pretty big step for that school. I saw them a few years back in I believe their first playoff game and they were absolutely outclassed by Harrison. I doubt that to be the case now. How young are they?

  104. PVPV says:

good win for pv, thats 3 in a row on rye! great goalie play for valley, i thought the game was definatly in ryes favor as number 6 on rye seemed to be taking the game over early but pv got hot!!

  105. LI Lax says:

On Connetquot: They have two very skilled attackmen in Kieran McArdle (St. John’s) and Matt McQuade, and a stud pole in Mike Pellegrino (Hopkins). The supporting players are all capable and they have athletes all over the field, they are going to be tough to beat. Wins over Sachem North, East Islip, and Whitman all by 3+ goals seem to confirm that this team will certainly be a top four seed in Suffolk A, which is by far the toughest league in the region this year. They could challenge for a top two seed if they beat some combination of Smithtown West, WI, and WM in the upcoming weeks. Keep in mind that this team has never made it past the county semifinals (and that semifinal finish was last year, a 10-4 loss to WI).
On Whitman: They are perhaps the most unpredictable team in Suffolk so far, and are still 4-3 despite the win over WM. They lost to Floyd (which doesn’t seem as bad after yesterday), Connetquot, and were blown out by Smithtown West 11-3. They are going to need some more good wins before they can make this top 25, but they have enough talent and two stars with Jones and Teretsky to give any team fits.

I understand the hatred towards national rankings. If you guys read laxpower, you should probably know that I collaborate with two MIAA posters to do weekly national rankings…they are simply to initiate forum debate, and people generally find them interesting. Since between the three of us, we have seen many highly ranked teams play (and I watch several MIAA games on tape), we can accurately compare many teams, although not all, so there is still some guesswork involved.

  106. lacrossegeek says:

slacrosse you are absolutely right. Saw the game Sat. nite and the first half Rye looked like the Rye of past years. Second half came out like they did against Byram. Offense just passing around not very good shot selection. Cole is a warrior but I don’t think he can help much. When he has to play defense, they run by him because of his injuries. All teams know this now. Its turning into a long season.

  107. slacrosse says:

    Lacrossegeek,

Agree on second half. Man, its one thing for PV to have come back for a close game given the quality of PV but am at a loss to explain the UTTER reversal of how Rye was playing vs. 1st half. Yes I agree fully about McCormack.

  108. D-PAC says:

Hey slacrosse, what’s your prediction on Town vs PV?

  109. Doid23 says:

    LI Lax,

To be clear, I don’t mind national rankings, just don’t like them before half the lacrosse playing world has played a game. After 4 or 5 games, fine, of course things are going to change, but at least there is something to base them on. Hey, for someone who said that they hate the rankings, I look for them every week, so maybe I’ve got some internal problems. Keep up the good work.

  110. Sec1 says:

The Best player ever in Sec1 is Towns Tim Nelson

  111. finalizer says:

    Better than Colsey?

  112. Old Rugger says:

LI Lax good list. Think Chaminade and Sett should be reversed (will know soon enough) Would replace Pac with LP and SWR above Conquot. Darien will move up the list as it is very early in their season.

  113. gimme a stick says:

wclax…Eastchester has one senior and three juniors. The difference is they now have a coach in place for his third year, Larry Petroccione, and the kids coming out of the maturing Blue Devils program are ready for HS. The town loses some players to catholic and private schools but there is a solid foundation now in place and the Eagles should continue to improve.

  114. Old Rugger says:

Eastchester youth a solid program I know the Iona coach helps with the youth league there.

  115. Sec1 says:

    Finalizer

Who is better? Roy is a great player one of the best ever, but Tim is the best hands down. At Yorktown Total points Tim 392 Roy 221, in college Tim 320 Roy 163, Tim 4th in NCAA D1 history in total points, Greer and Danowski are tied for first with 353 Danowski 83 games Greer 82 Tim 57 do the math. Tim averaged 5.61 points per gm over 4 yrs, Tim NCAA D1 Attackman of the yr 3 times, Roy Midfielder of yr 1 time. If you looked into some of the other Great Yorktown players Roy might not be second best, I have seen all of them play. In my opinion Tim could be the best Lacrosse player ever? Jim Brown thinks he is!

  116. Sec1 says:

    Finalizer

When Tim played in High School NYS quaters were 10 min long, when Roy played they were 12 that is 8 more mins every game. Do the math it’s scary.

  117. Syracuse says:

    Oracle,

I never said Yorktown was winning the game. Never. I said it wouldn’t surprise me if they somehow pulled it out, but I did pick GC by 3, which was what a lot of people said. I was suprised Yorktown wasn’t competitive but in retrospect it’s understandable. They just don’t have the horses right now, have replaced an entire defense and goalie. What’s more perplexing is the offense struggling as it has with arguably the best attackman in Section 1 as the focal point.

As for Section 1 not being ready for prime time, that’s been obvious forever. Throw in Yorktown from 2003 and Jay’s spirited run a few years back and that’s about it. There is no comparing the two regions regardless of the names that come out of the top programs in the Hudson Valley. I think Town’s loss to Syosset in 2008 was a real crusher.

Yorktown could easily lose every big game it has on the schedule and could fall to some other Section 1 teams. But the good news is they still have a ton of games to play and should still be considered the favorite to get to Hofstra.

  118. finalizer says:

    Sec 1,

That’s all valid stuff. I just think you might be basing your argument a little too much on points, but that’s me. Mids do it all, and its not all reflected in #’s. 3x attackman of the year is pretty impressive though and since I’ve never seen him play, I’ll defer to you on this one.

  119. 1st Hand Observer says:

Most who saw Timmy and Tommy Nelson play would tell you Tommy was the better lacrosse player who could do it all. If you like stats go with Timmy(pure feeder), but if you like well rounded lacrosse players I would go with Tommy. Similar comparisons have been made about Dom Fin and Colsey to some degree. 2 different styles of play. Dom would break you’re ankles and Roy would run over you…take you’re pick. Both were nasty! Dom also ran attack in final four his freshman year which showed his versatility….Either way all 4 are up there for best ever in high school and D-1!

  120. Sec1 says:

    Finalizer, First Hand

Some very good points, the Last thing I will say about Tim, before he arrived at Cuse they had never been to the Finals, after his 3yrs at Cuse they were in the Finals all 3 yrs. And won their first NCAA championship. Assist win games because they lead to GOALS!!!

  121. Doid23 says:

The fact that Tim Nelson isn’t in the Hall of Fame is a travesty, plain and simple. Until they fix that slight, the selection committee has no credibility. Just ridiculous.

  122. Europe 72 says:

    LI Lax Rankings:

Manhasset should be 1, Chaminade 2, GC 3, Melville lower…
Mahopac shouldn’t be in there but Somers instead, Jay too high, New Canaan too high, Fairfield Prep too high,
    Staples?
    where’s Ridgefield?

love that you posted a ranking because we can all see a list of the top teams in place on this site. MORE PEOPLE SHOULD DO THIS HERE

  123. Europe 72 says:

i retract my statement about somers over pac. but staples?

  124. Sec1 says:

    Doid23

I agree 100% with your statement, it is not Tim’s talent that’s keeping him out. I think they don’t like Tim as a person, which should never keep anyone out!!

  125. LI Lax says:

    Europe,

Staples beat Ridgefield…they deserve their spot over the Tigers for now. I don’t believe that Manhasset is better than Garden City, West Islip, Chaminade, or Ward Melville honestly, but at this point they deserve to be ranked ahead of WM. We will see tomorrow how they match up with Chaminade.
Jay may very well be too high, but I couldn’t see ranking them below some of the teams that are below them…remember, they have only lost once.
I know you retracted your statement, but Somers only has one win, so they can’t be ranked quite yet 🙂

  126. LI Lax says:

You’re actually probably right that Smithtown West and EI should be above Jay at this point
