A new era officially begins at Arlington today as first-year head coach Donny Connolly makes his debut as the Admirals take on Haldane.

It will be a whirlwind week for Connolly and Arlington. On Friday, they visit North Salem before hosting Kennedy Catholic and its new coaches, Nick and Vinny Savastano, on Saturday.

Connolly did not exactly take it slow in jumping in. He scheduled and played scrimmages against Somers, John Jay and Put Valley. They also scrimmaged — and defeated — Harrison, Hen Hud and Eastchester.

“All in all, we are moving along at a good pace,” said Connolly, a former Yorktown standout who was an assistant on Ridgefield’s FCIAC championship team last year.

The Haldane at Arlington game is a 5:15 p.m. start.

Another new coach, Croton’s John Schwamb, makes his debut in a home game against Wappingers at 4:30 p.m.

The headliner game of the day in Section 1 features John Jay, fresh off its fifth win over Yorktown in the last eight meetings between the teams, visits Lakeland/Panas in a 6:30 p.m. game at Lakeland High School. The Rebels outlasted John Jay in overtime last year.

Also in Section 1, Yorktown looks to bounce back from its loss to John Jay on Saturday with a 4:30 p.m. home game against Hen Hud.

Elsewhere, Pleasantville visits Byram Hills and and Horace Greeley hosts Brewster with both games starting at 4:30 p.m.

On Long Island today, Garden City, third-ranked in the nation and fresh off a come-from-behind 6-5 win at Smithtown West, visits South Side at 4:15 p.m. Manhasset visits Mineola at 4:30 p.m. at Hampton Stadium.

In Suffolk, Half Hollow Hills West plays at Babylon at 4 p.m. and East Hampton hosts Sayville at 4:30 p.m. among the games on tap.

It’s a busy day in the CHSAA. Iona Prep visits Kellenberg at noon. Other matchups include St. Anthony’s vs. St. John the Baptist, Fordham Prep vs. Monsignor Farrell and Stepinac vs. Mount St. Michael.

FCIAC regular-season action starts tomorrow.

As always, be sure to post your thoughts on these matchups as well as any info on the scores and game details.

The JJ boys are tearing it up in college right now! Bocklet is leading the #1 team in the nation in goals and points and is tied for 6th in the entire NCAA (along with another JJ grad, Douglass) in goals/game. Syracuse, the 2x defending champs? A JJ grad is leading them in points as well with Daniello. And Bohlander is a star on close defense for Maryland, another one of the best teams in the nation. Stockel is a star for Drexel, and there are many other JJ grads doing excellent in college. Now that’s impressive!

Then they play Ossining on Thursday.

    Who made this schedule…geez!

  25. LAX says:

Nice job JJ! Stats for the JJ game?

  26. Indian J says:

Well, I want to say nice job Lakeland. Lakeland was ready and Im sure feels they could have taken this game. That may also mean that the Murphy Cup and Sectional finals against Town could be very interesting. Good win for us. Would love to know stats when they are available.

  27. Europe 72 says:

Garden City and JJ will have their hands full against Manhasset it seems. but we’ll see, there’s typically a lot of parity on the island; look at WI losing early.

Manhasset is terrific, but maybe they can be stopped on 1 good day from a top opponent? their schedule sure is full of them.

i happen to have been born in Manhasset, lived in GC where my uncle played in the 60s, and grew up in Jay country where I played against manhasset all four seasons in high school. That love triangle fascinates me every year.

  28. Kharas says:

Wappingers over Croton 15-6. Good faceoffs, fast breaks, goalie play for Wappingers. #5 on Croton is a player, though. Lefty attack had 4 or 5 goals and was the focal point of offense.

  29. Europe 72 says:

just looked at garden city’s schedule. wow. @ St. Pauls, Carey who has that kid going to MD, Yorktown. all in a row

where is the GC/yorktown game being played?

  30. Joe Lombardi says:

    Europe 72 –

Yorktown faces Garden City at noon on Saturday, April 17 at Haverford College in Pa., as part of the Checking for Cancer Classic. Darien faces Conestoga (Pa.) at that event as well.

  31. laxified says:

That is some triangle of lacrosse powers. I think the kid from Carey is out for the year with a torn ACL

  32. Joe Lombardi says:

    Laxified –

Greg D’Arienzo of Carey, who is headed to Maryland, is expected to miss the season with a broken collarbone. The injured occurred in the preseason.

  33. laxified says:

Thanks Joe, sorry for the misinfo

  34. Joe Lombardi says:

No need to apologize, laxified. Your basic info in that Greg is likely to be out for the year was correct.

  35. laxified says:

Well, you hate to see that either way although it probably is a “better” injury these kids wait all year for their season and you have to feel for him

  36. Joe Lombardi says:

    Yes definitely on both counts.

  37. slacrosse says:

Jay/LP great game to watch. Thought the teams played pretty equally but J did have the scoring edge most of the game until LP tied it, then J went ahead by 1. Thought J’s set play was really improved from last weekend. Interesting to see Shurr still trying out both goalies.

Hey ya gotta luv that Fazio D kid on LP (5 ft tall—-MAYBE!). Remember how well he played against Ranagan in last yr’s playoff. Aside from his dogged D he’s REALLY fast and had some great transition runs. Naturally he was on Dinello and did a solid job with Dan getting a few.

  38. Route 35 says:

JJ vs. LP: One thing is for sure, J can win a few of different ways. Tonight they came out a little flat after Saturday’s pressure cooker but held a 2-4 goal lead throughout the game. JJ ran a measured and patient offense and had a number of good looks. Tonight, with the exception of a man up goal and a face off fast break, JJ scored all of their goals from a settled offense. Nice cuts from behind the goal, open man in the middle, and finishing were the keys to the game. They let LP back in late with an LP 3 goal run but you never saw JJ panic. Even when they gave the ball back with over a minute left they calmly got back on D, forced LP to take some long range shots, and held on for a one goal victory (one spectacular save by Franklin helped). The team personality early in the season is not unlike their coaches, calm and quiet confidence.
LP is a solid team with strength at the midfield. They are fast and shoot well from long range. They belong in the top 4 of section one and will no doubt stay in the top 4 all season long. I do think that Yorktown will prevail in the Murphy Cup due to stronger goaltending and attack. The two midfields are equal. Somers was in the house tonight and scouting both teams. Town, JJ, LP, Somers would have a fun and competitive 4-way jamboree.
A nice development for JJ is the fact that the scoring can come from 6-7 different players. Tonight O’Donnell was help in check but Weil threw in a couple. In addition, Morris, Daniello, Walter, other Morris, combined on the remaining 7 goals. JJ will have to find a higher gear for Friday at Sett but so far so good for the squad from Cross River.

  39. Doid23 says:

As I stated in an earlier post, I like the fact that Schurr is playing two goalies, I’m assuming because he doesn’t have a clear indication in his mind of of who he’s more comfortable with. But he’s got to choose one (at least that’s what I believe), and Friday night is as good a time as any, any input from those who have seen both goalies in several games?

  40. slacrosse says:

    Doid23

Saw both of them vs Town and tonight at LP. Maher definitely was stronger tonight vs. Sat but based on Sat and tonite, I’d give the edge to Franklin..

  41. Benlaxman says:

    John Jay 9 Lakeland/Panas 8

Well I managed to get to the game. The game was for the most not as close as the final score, but L/P should be congratulated for hanging in and making it a game by the end of the third and 4th quarters. (Thanks Jaybird our stats are unofficial and it’s a pain to add them up! I’m only going to add up mine to see if there is something else to say… keep up the good work!)

    The scores by quarters:
    Jay 4, 1, 3, 1 | 9
    L/P 2, 1, 3, 2 | 8

As a team they are unstoppable. I say this because although they only won 2 out of 7 faceoffs in the first quarter, they outscored L/P 4 to 2 with 3 goals coming assisted. Credit to L/P! At times they looked more like Jay with 7 of their 8 goals coming assisted! This shows that Jay needs to pick up their coverage on sliding, and switching for the inside game in front of the goal. Jay almost gave the game back to L/P in the second and third quarters when they played way too much 1 on 1. There were at least 8 unassisted shots and 1 pipe that missed the goal. Daniello, the best player on the field, should worry less about dodging and more about dishing. Going for the third dodge is not a highly successful tactic no matter how good you are. This also goes for Weil, who should more often look for the dish on the slide. On the other hand, Weil should be congratulated for “picking it up” on the faceoff for the Second half.
    saves
I did notice that Coach Schurr put in a lot of second/third string guys at Middie and D throughout the game. Perhaps this and platooning goalies between halves had the effect to keep the score closer. This should bod well for the end of the season and overall team strength. Both goalies, Maher (start) and Franklin were adequate if not spectacular. Maher posted 3 saves and Franklin had 6 which was indicative of about double the amount of shots from L/P in the second half. Unfortunately for Franklin, L/P started their comeback with their 2nd goal in the third, a heart breaker, after Jay had made it 8-4, when the ball rebounded out of Franklin’s stick, and up and over his head for a goal to get to 8-5. From that point on, L/P outscored Jay 3-1 for the 9-8 final. A few more judicious shots by L/P at the end, in the last min 35 when they got back the ball and they might have tied it and possibly won.
Jay needs to pick it up for Manhasset on Friday, if they want to win. I honestly cannot say if the result of today’s game is because Coach Schurr continues to “tinker,” which is best for the long haul or the team was overlooking L/P who are proving to be the powers they usually are in Section 1!

    Route 35

Rooting for Jay on Sat. but I feel that Jay will have to play at a significantly “higher gear” to be competitive with Sett, Hope they do!! Would love this victory for Section 1!

  43. Old Rugger says:

Thanks Ben. Sounds like 2 main points “pick up the coverage on sliding and switching in front of goal” and more dodge and pass instead of dodge and dodge again. If this is the case a very quick and well skilled Sett team will take advantage of this. Sounds like J lost a lot of face offs early was Walter taking any of them or was it Weil? FO sounds like a work in progress with Merlino out, and posessions will be priceless come Friday. Good luck JJ bring home a Sect 1 victory.

  44. WhaleBelt says:

FYI, ‘Set’s FO guy (Sr. Ricky Buhr) is a hoss at X and is heading to ‘Cuse as a FOGO middie.

  45. sectional_sect says:

#5 on Croton is David Pojman, and yes he is a player…a Westrock guy.

Congrats to Wap for getting some momentum.

  46. Slacrosse says:

    Old rugger

Yeah. j will be going up against Syracuse recruit Buhr at FO,

  47. lax machine says:

JJ defense is tough. I agree that hey need to do a little better on the slide but Smythe, Lambert & Waldman have been a nice suprise. Middies are playing great “D” — Beck is playing very well. Thought Pickel did a great job on Honovich shutting him down evrytime he was on him. Lanza & Caviolla doing great as well.

  48. TownLaxer says:

    lax machine,

It looks as though Tim Schurr has not fully installed his “famous” zone defense. From what I saw ~vs~ Town,… it was all dependant on which middie line was out here with them . Maybe a degree of confidence? This I think they will address within the next few games.

  49. Syracuse says:

Congrats to Jay for the L/P win. It looks like we are going to have a four-way battle royale for Section 1 supremacy this year. Good to see. I’m going to Arlington-Kennedy on Saturday to see just what Mr. Connolly and Savastano are up to. Comments to follow. No story, just some analysis. Have a good one all.

  50. slacrosse says:

Pre-season I thought Pac would definitely be in the hunt to be in the top grouping with their returning kids inc. a top goalie. Not too late but they need some wins or at least very close games against the top teams and dominance over others they “should” beat.

  51. Benlaxman says:

    Old Rugger,

I believe Weil took all if not most of them. As I said, he markedly improved in the second half with experience. As previously noted, FO was not their problem in the second half. I may be biased, but I think that Weil can be the real deal as FOG with more experience and confidence. The game with Sett should be interesting in this area, as for “foretelling” the future (along with the rest of both team’s relative”maturity” this early in the the season). Don’t forget, Jay was able to compensate against Town and L/P enough to win and a win is a win! If they get this aspect down, that will make them so much better!
    Ben

  52. Old Rugger says:

The Savs don’t have much to start with. Handfull of good lax kids but many who did not touch a stick until High School (and don’t play summer or winter). Very tough to compete in Sect 1 without a pipeline. Also Trodden one of their better players I hear is hurt and is out for a few games. ‘Cuse would love to hear your observations of the game.

  53. Dog says:

Kennedy opens up first game tomorrow with Croton Harmon. Should be a good game. I here Kennedy is not very talented but very well coached and the kids are buying into everything the Savs are throwing at them. I will be rooting for you guys tomorrow go get them — Big league game……………………………………

  54. JJalum says:

Good Luck Savs from JJ alumni 2007. Those coaches did a lot for me not just lacrosse but my life.
