After two-plus days of drenching rain, things have finally let up. Still, that wet weather remains a factor in the form of field conditions.

For instance, Yorktown’s season opener, which had been scheduled for Wappingers, will now be played at Yorktown at noon because the Huskers have a turf field.

A four-way scrimmage between Somers, White Plains, Bronxville and Suffern, that had been scheduled for yesterday at White Plains, will instead be held today at Somers at 11:30 a.m.

Mahopac, which has a turf field, opens the season at home with a 7 p.m. game against Mercer Island.

Among 11 games on the schedule in Nassau, Manhasset hosts Northport at 11 a.m. and Syosset plays at Cold Spring Harbor at 7 p.m.

In Suffolk,Commack visits Center Moriches at 10 a.m. and West Islip hosts Sachem North and Rocky Point plays at Middle Country at 11 a.m.

As always, be sure to post your thoughts on these matchups as well as any info on the scores and game details.

I think that Northport at Manhasset could be interesting…I see Manhasset prevailing but I think they’ll get a decent test from a young Northport team. My guess is 11-7 Manhasset, with the difference being Ricky Buhr’s ability to win faceoffs and control possession for ‘Set.

WI could get a test from Sachem North, I would say this game will be close for the first half and then WI pulls away, 14-7 final.

Not sure what to think of Syosset-CSH…early season game between two teams expected to be better than last season, I’ll take CSH as the home team in a low scoring affair, 7-6.

  2. LI Lax says:

    Predictions:

Northport stays with Manhasset for a while, but ‘Set pulls away late for an 11-7 win.

WI and Sachem North is close for a while, broken open by WI in the second half, 14-7

Syosset and CSH will be close throughout and low-scoring. Both of these teams are expected to be improved from last year and the coaches know each other well. I’ll take CSH, the home team, 7-6.

Rocky Point should handle Middle Country pretty easily

Very interested to see the result of Mahopac and Mercer Island, given L/P’s results out in Washington.

  3. LI Lax says:

Sorry for the double post, first one didn’t show up for a while.

  4. casual observer says:

joe what would you predict Mahopac vs. Mercer island?

  5. Joe Lombardi says:

Mercer Island takes a 6-0 record into today’s game vs. the ‘Pac and will be playing vs. L/P at Lakeland tomorrow at 7-0. These will be big statement games for Hudson Valley lax in these tests vs. an upstart program from Washington. I’ll take the Indians tonight 9-7.

  6. Joe Lombardi says:

Also of note, Mercer Island wraps up its East Coast swing on Saturday with a 4 p.m. game at Guilderland.

  7. LI Lax says:

    WI up 5-3 after 1

  8. LI Lax says:

    6-6 at half

  9. LI Lax says:

    7-6 WI early third

  10. LI Lax says:

    7-7 now

  11. LI Lax says:

    8-7 North, 5:57 in the 3rd.

  12. LI Lax says:

    10-8 North, 2:16 in the 3rd.

  13. LI Lax says:

Still 10-8, end of the 3rd.

  14. LI Lax says:

    10-9, 8:50 to go.

Also, Manhasset is dominating Northport 13-2 with 8 minutes left in the third quarter.

  15. LI Lax says:

WI ties the game at 10

  16. LI Lax says:

    6 minutes left

  17. LI Lax says:

Galasso puts WI on top with 4:42 left

  18. LI Lax says:

    11-11 with 1:56 left

  19. LI Lax says:

    12-12 1:20 left

  20. LI Lax says:

Sachem North goes offsides with 26 seconds left, WI has possession and are in a timeout right now

  21. LI Lax says:

    Overtime

  22. LAX says:

Thanks a lot for the excellent updates LI Lax. Wow what an awesome game this must be.

  23. LI Lax says:

Sachem North pulls the upset, 13-12 (OT)

  24. LI Lax says:

They’re the first Suffolk team other than WM to beat WI since Smithtown in the 2003 county finals.

  25. LI Lax says:

    Manhasset 13, Northport 3 final.

  26. Popcorn stuffer says:

    I like Manhasset over JJ

  27. laxified says:

Congrats to Sn, what a shocker. Makes Saturday’s game vs Chaminade very interesting. Set totally dominated Northport and Buhr didn’t play. The Soph Mathews is pretty good on faceoffs himself. He,Duvnjak and Moroney will be something 2 years from now. Manhasset is balanced with 6 senior starters surrounded by juniors and the 3 sophs, they are deep, well coached and stingy on defense. Doesn’t look like a team rebuilding, not even close.

  28. Red Devil says:

    Any Town score?

  29. Bigeasy says:

    16-2 over Wappingers

  30. Lax says:

Yorktown 16-2 many young ones with first career varsity goals

  31. LI Lax says:

Manhasset definitely should not be overlooked, it appears they will not take as big of a hit as everyone expected losing the ten seniors. Can’t wait for their games against JJ, Chaminade, Darien and CSH.

  32. LI Lax says:

Smithtown West easily over Farmingdale 15-8

  33. laxified says:

Even though it’s a jamboree they play WM on Saturday at tha Acompora event.

  34. LI Lax says:

I will be at that scrimmage and report on here how it goes.

  35. laxified says:

And then shoot iover for WI-Cham at 1pm and GC-STownWest at 4 in 70 degree weather 🙂

  36. LI Lax says:

I believe GC-SW is at 6…but I plan on doing just that.

  37. laxified says:

    Oh my bad, thanks

  38. Joe Lombardi says:

You can catch highlights of Sachem North’s 13-12 overtime win today over the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, West Islip, tonight at 7 p.m. on MSG Varsity’s “Sports Desk” on Channel 14 (Optimum). I’ll join co-host Jared Greenberg on tonight and tomorrow’s show to give an overview on top teams/players in the reviews. The show reairs at 10 p.m. as well as tomorrow morning.

Also, there will be more coverage of the upset tonight at 8 p.m. on “A Quick :60,” hosted by Mike Quick on MSG Varsity Channel 14.

    LI Lax

You said SN/WI could be a “test” for WI but ultimately a 14-7 win for WI.

Wow-Where did SN come from? Were they supposed to be this good??

  40. sec12010 says:

Anyboyd what Towns’ starting line up is?

  41. slacrosse says:

    TO THE SUFFERN COMMUNITY

I know this is a lacrosse blog but still wanted to offer my condolences and prayers to the parents of the 2 Suffern baseball players that were just tragically killed in an auto accident, and to the Suffern community as a whole.

  42. LI Lax says:

Well I’m not surprised that Sachem North played them close, but the fact that they finished it off and won shocks me. Sachem North has some talented players and their goalie play seems to have been the difference in the game. At this point it doesn’t seem like WI is going to match up very well against Chaminade or WM, but we will see how they improve as the season goes on.

  43. laxified says:

Does anybody know when CSH came back from Fla ? With a game tonight it seams a little soon

  44. Sec1 says:

Mercer Island 3 Pac 2 at half, Pac was leading 2-1 but 2 Penaltys. 4-2 Mercer

  45. Lilax says:

    CSH came home yesterday.

  46. Sec1 says:

    5-2 Mercer

  47. Sec1 says:

End of 3rd Mercer 5-2, Mercer.small on O but very Quick

  48. scooter says:

thats the final. 7-3. very very very very disappointing start to Mahopacs season

  49. Sec1 says:

7-3 Mercer Final, way to quick for Pac and love to shoot. D was also good, it is their 7th game and Pac’s first.

  50. Iceman says:

Nice coverage Sec1. Thanks for the play by play.

  51. Sec1 says:

    Anytime Iceman

  52. slacrosse says:

Sure Mahopac’s loss is disappointing but not necessarily an upset. MI is a good team and lacrosse is a big deal in WA. They normally play teams from other parts of the country and have sent kids to D1 schools.

  53. Scooter says:

Its 1 game. Ask west islip about that. What happens if l/p loses to them tomorrow? I’m just sayin it’s one game

  54. dontworrybehappy says:

Mahopac will be fine. Mercer is quality and now Pac has some winnable games on the schedule.

    E. Islip – tough but winnable
Greeley – had a few good wins last year, but the D is gone and this is this year
    Somers – banged up
    Hen Hud – ugh
    Ossining – please
Yorktown – back into the fire

Don’t be surprised if they run off 3 – 5 wins in the next 5 games and then this loss will be but a memory.

  55. s1wss says:

whats the dates on the Ossining and Yorktown game.. would love to see Ossining get to play them in what could be a trap game if they were playing Town a couple days later. Got Ossining’s offense with McCullogh and a couple others, and Bardwell keeping the score low. Ossining could make much more of a game than Mahopac wants, Town fans would love that

  56. WALAXER says:

Teams from WA have good players that have been playing since second grade and good coaching from former NCAA players and with the Stealth there now they have access to pro players as coaches. They have teams at every age group traveling back East in the summers to play East Coast ball. LP had all they could handle in WA losing to 2 Canadian teams and Stealing one from Bellevue. Expect a good game at LP and Guilderland from MI.

  57. Bigeasy says:

Yes but Pac was at home on their own field and looked out of it. Not a good start for the Indians. Offense looked stagnant. Mercer looked OK but they were not as good as a Jay or Town. Coach Corace will have their D playing better but if they were going to make a good run, you thought this would have been a nice starter for that.

  58. clubber lang says:

Corace held them to 7 goals the haddelands have to score more than 3

  59. scooter says:

Keep in mind it was 7th game of the season vs 1st game. It’s not an excuse, just a fact

  60. Lax123 says:

D was fine.Middies have to control the middle of the field and stop turning the ball over.Thompson has to win some faceoffs and shoot more from the top. Bernabo need to shoot the ball.If you dont shoot you cant score.Need to get Brando into open space .He has one of the best shots in Section andneeds to shoot.Coaches will adjust and all will be forgotten.after all its game one.

  61. casual observer says:

Mahopac Defense was actually very well, from what i watched there were no tallies by attackmen besides extra man opportunities

  62. Yellow says:

Who on Somers is hurt, and who is not playing Saturday???

  63. lax123 says:

    Cas
First goal by Brando was even strength

  64. casual observer says:

    lax123,

im reffering to the Mercer island attackmen, Mahopac defense shut them down besides man down tallies

  65. LIlax says:

Pac needs much improvement. They did not look good.

  66. slacrosse says:

    To Long Island/Garden City Fans

Saw St. Pauls lose to McDonogh 7-6 on Sat. The play of St. Pauls (and McDonough) was VERY sloppy in ALL phases. Was really shocked given the level of lacrosse was expecting to see. Attack kid Powderly of SP going to Cuse was a non-entity during the game and made a couple of basic passing/catching errors.

Have to assume they’ll get a game like this out of their system and you could see top lacrosse players out there.

But if “yesterday’s team” shows up, and GC plays their usual great way, FOR SURE, GC brings home a win (not that GC cant win even if SP was playing well).

  67. Casual observer says:

joe, someones stealing my name man.

  68. Joe Lombardi says:

    CO –

I noticed that. See what happens when you get big – everyone wants to get in on the act.

Maybe you can now go by “Casual observer 1”?

If it makes you feel better, you have a distinct “voice,” so I can tell who’s who.

  69. Casual observer says:

hahaha yea the big time has its downsides as im sure you’ve found now with the recent release of your book. statement day for alot of programs tomorrow. who ya got?

  70. Joe Lombardi says:

Thanks CO. Hope you get to check out the book.

Posting score predictions is pretty tough at this point since it is so early in the season.

I do think JJ-Yorktown will be a one- or two-goal game either way – with the score in the 9-7, 10-8 neighborhood. As I wrote earlier, faceoffs will be a big key. I saw one JJ scrimmage and the Indians struggled in the faceoff X vs. Delbarton. They will need to do a better job to beat Yorktown.

West Islip does not have quite the depth it’s had in years past and I think that was one of the factors in the loss to Sachem North. But I do see West Islip bouncing back by beating Chaminade — maybe even in another overtime game. It will be the MSG game of the week, so be sure to check it out Sunday morning at 9 a.m. I just don’t see the Lions, the preseason No. 1 team in the nation and winners of three state titles in the last four years, losing two straight games — at home no less — to start the season.

As for Somers-Yorktown, I think it will be closer than most people seem to think. Remember, Yorktown beat St. A’s 14-10 last year. St. A’s always plugs in new starters at the beginning of each season, so it’s always a much better team at the end of the season than it is at the start. Again, faceoffs are a key here. Somers has to more than hold its own to stay in it with Erik Pfiffner, Anthony Lombardo and Matt Deiana expected to share duties.

  71. Casual observer says:

    should be a great day
