It’s Week 1 of the regular season for many teams who didn’t get things started last week in the Hudson Valley/Long Island region. (Teams in Connecticut do not open up until a week from today.)

It should be a memorable opening week with some huge matchups scheduled for Saturday, including John Jay-Yorktown, Chaminade-West Islip and Somers-St. Anthony’s.

More on that as the week unfolds. But first, let’s take a look at what’s on tap for today.

Among the six games on tap involving Section 1 teams, Briarcliff visits Eastchester for a noon game that marks the debut of first-year Briarcliff coach Paul Bordonaro. The Bears played two scrimmages, losing to Lakeland/Panas 14-4 and beating Clarkstown North 5-3. Eastchester defeated Pearl River 12-6 in its season opener last week.

Hen Hud maintains its longtime rivalry with Wantagh with an 11 a.m. game at Wantagh.

Also in Nassau County today, Massapequa host Plainedge in a 4 p.m. game at the Field of Dreams on Sunrise Highway.

Cold Spring Harbor visits Pine Crest and Freeport plays at Long Beach at the Long Beach Rec Center, with both games at 11 a.m.

In Suffolk, Harborfields is at North Babylon for a 10 a.m. start and Cherry Creek visits Rocky Point at noon.

In scrimmage action, five-time Connecticut state champion Darien hosts John Jay, winners of four sectional titles in the last five years, in a 4:30 p.m. game.

As always, be sure to post your thoughts on these matchups as well as any info on the scores and game details.

    LI Lax,

Not surprised it was close. CC is a strong team that travels around US every yr tp play good out of state teams.

  4. slacrosse says:

    gimme a stick,

    Good solid win for EC.

  5. gimme a stick says:

slacrosse…yes, not there got a report from a couple that were, miserable conditions played on field turf at EHS. A good start for the Eagles, now 2-0, and also split at a 5 way scrimmage at Somers on Saturday, looking good vs. Hen Hud and Pelham (neither team showed anything to each other in that one, they play next week) overmatched vs. Somers, and tired vs. Arlington. A young team that should have a fun season.

  6. slacrosse says:

    gimme a stick,

Dont worry about Somers-most team will be pretty under-matched against them this season! Looks like the EHS program will be keeping up that good “mo” from last season.

  7. LI Lax says:

    Wantagh 14, Hen Hud 2

  8. LI Lax says:

Sachem North 17, Potomac School (of the MAC in DC) 3

LI Lax … Great job with the updates. I’m stuck in the office and enjoying them. Keep ’em coming!

  10. O-Man says:

    Nice job Eastchester.

Dave Massi four goals for the Eagles.

Now break out the checkbook and get a real field.

  11. laxr says:

Darien and John Jay played three quarters with starters and finished in a 4-4 tie (Darien got three in the fourth with backups — John Jay took a small group and had to keep a few in). Darien scored in the first 15 seconds, and won the first quarter 2-1. John Jay probably had the better of the next two quarters, as Darien was not possessing the ball and committed penalties (I would say they played better overall against WI and FP than against JJ). Both offenses were a little sloppy in the rain (Darien’s more so), but each team’s D and goalie were superb. Judging from those three quarters, the two teams looked incredibly even.

  12. Observer says:

Laxr … Having seen both Somers and John Jay scrimmage Darien how would you compare those teams and who do you think is better – Somers or John Jay???

  13. laxr says:

It’s tough to compare, given the disparity of play Darien showed against Somers. Somers was impressive early on, but that was the worst quarter or so Darien has played thus far (no coincidence that it was also the first quarter of game situation they had played all year). However, Darien played better during that 7-0 run to close the scrimmage than they did against John Jay. Based on the eyeball test, I would say that Somers may have more great athletes, but John Jay has a better D. Also, though Somers has the ability to really surprise some teams with their athleticism, I think Darien showed that a team that moves the ball well (like John Jay) can really take control against them.

Anyways, this is a long-winded way of me saying that John Jay looked like a more complete/better team (but these are just scrimmages and the weather conditions were very different, so this is all just speculation).

Gimme a stick, Not trying to hate, but I think you’re analysis of the Eastchester/Arlington game was a bit off. 4th game for both teams and the admirals dominated every facet of that game and won by over 10 goals. Not sure the “tired” comment reflects too much accuracy. Good luck this season!

  15. gimme a stick says:

    1st hand…

Good luck to you as well, yes Arlington dominated, however I stand by my tired comment as EHS had 17 players I think, and used the backup goalie for most of the game. I don’t think any of the teams there wanted to show anything on Saturday so the results all have to be taken with a grain of salt. Yes Arlington beat EHS, but I think the game could have been much closer under other circumstances.

btw, you’re not a hater, just from Arlington…no problem!

  16. fresh says:

arlingtons the better team handsdown, they beat them last year without the new and improved coaching staff and looked miles better than ehs in the scrimmage saturday

  17. ahslax says:

It should be mentioned that Arlington beat Pelham and Hen Hud…
