Horace Greeley will be getting its share of tough tests this season.

The Quakers are members of newly aligned Conference League III-A, along with defending Class B sectional champion Somers as well as John Jay and Rye, who are both sectional champs four of the past five years.

Wittenberg University-bound senior defenseman Hunter Bastian shares his thoughts on the challenges that await the Quakers, who advanced to the sectional semifinals last year.

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
I just finished up hockey season, but I’ve been running two times a week with the team and been working out with the team as well. In addition I have also been playing Brewster indoor.

Can you talk about some of the key players you lost from last year and how you think you will be able to replace them?
Last year we had a tremendous senior class that will be hard to replace. We lost most of our defense in Ben Litwak, Derek Katchis and Jake Jessup  and our goalie, Jack Beller. However, we have some good young players who will be ready to go when the season starts. On the offensive side of the ball, we lost some good players as well, especially at the midfield position. But we have some good young players and we return our top three scorers in Nate Becker, Danny Leventhal and Alex Cohen.

How does your schedule look and what games are you looking forward to most?
I am really excited to get outside the section and play Guilderland and (Westport) Staples. They should be good tests for us. I am also looking forward to playing our new league schedule.

What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
I think junior goalie Gabe Weisman will have a big year for us between the pipes. Junior Joe Hinderstien
and senior Adam Tanne will also help revitalize our defense and will help fill in the missing hole and senior defensive midfielder Kyle Shaub should have a breakout year.

What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
I think the strength of our team will be our attack unit led by seniors Nate Becker and Alex Cohen have really meshed well and should have a really strong year for our team.

    Hunter,

Seen you play and you’re a really good Dman and wish you best of luck at college and as well to the HG team.

You mentioned you played hockey! I have to say how disappointed Section 1 was with Greeley’s having to forfeit its last # of ice hockey games due to injuries and EXAMS (!!) detracting from an already small roster!! Not good for HG or the teams it was supposed to play.

I hope and assume HG’s lacrosse team is alot healthier then your hockey team, for your sake and everyone else.

They’ll feel the loss of all the defenseman, but might be able to outscore some teams.

    Good luck!

I think Greeley could be a sleeper this year.
