Mike Kimmel’s extra-man goal with 49 seconds remaining lifted Johns Hopkins to an 8-7 win over upset-minded visitor Siena in a game today at Homewood Field in Baltimore in another game that demonstrates the increased parity in collegiate lacrosse
Hopkins senior goalie Brent Herbst of Plainview had to come out of the game with just over a minute remaining in regulation after taking a penalty on a play in which he ranged out of the crease area. Herbst finished with nine saves. Junior Bill Kelly of Rocky Point replaced Herbst in goal.
Siena, which won the MAAC tournament title last season, had tied it at 7-7 on an overhanded right-hand shot by attackman Chris Roth from about 15 yards out with 4:21 remaining.
Roth, a Northport product, had pulled Siena within 7-6 with 5:53 remaining on a left-handed blast.
A goal by Siena sophomore attackman Bryan Neufeld with one second remaining in the third quarter pulled the Saints within 6-5. Neufeld was the MAAC rookie of the year for teh Saints, who fell to Syracuse in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
But Kimmel answered for Hopkins (3-0) with a well-placed left-handed blast 2:09 into the fourth quarter to give Hopkins a 7-5 lead.
With Hopkins, playing its third game in nine days, holding a precarious 3-2 lead early in the third quarter, Ranagan scored on a spectacular move to the left of the cage in which he dodged right, then switched to his left hand before unleashing a shot from just outside the crease while falling to the ground.
Another former Yorktown player, Siena senior Kyle Vercrussye, helped lead a Saints defense that frustrated Hopkins throughout, aided in large part by the play of all-America goaltender Herbst.
Siena returns to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. with a game at Albany. Hopkins returns to action Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against Princeton at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
Carrier Dome doubleheader today
There will be an all-New York doubleheader at Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome today featuring four of the winningest programs in NCAA history.
No. 1-ranked and two-time defending national champ Syracuse hosts Army at 3 p.m. Then, at 6 p.m., 2009 national finalist Cornell meets Hobart.
With 794 victories, Syracuse is the second winningest program behind Johns Hopkins. Hobart ranks fourth (719 wins – many of which came when Hobart competed at the D-III level), Army is fifth (706 wins) and Cornell checks in at No. 7 (665 wins).
In an interesting sidenote to the Syracuse-Army game, Syracuse freshman attackman/midfielder JoJo Marasco’s older brother, Matt, is a junior defenseman for Army. Former Somers junior varsity head coach and Mahopac varsity coach Ted Georgalas is a first-year assistant coach for the Black Knights.

Nice game by Siena. Two former Mahopac Standouts are captains of the Siena Saints. Matt Leithead and Fous Bernabo. Matt was a dnp due to a hamstring Injury but Faus had a good game as the LSM guarding Hopkins best Mid all game. Section One was well represented in that game with Leithead, Bernabo, Vercrussye, and Ranagan. Nice job guys.
