We continue counting down to the official start of varsity practice for the 2010 season by checking in with some of the leading players from throughout the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region.

Now batting is Wesleyan-bound senior attackman/midfielder Ian Vazquez, who helped Ridgefield win the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference title for the first time in school history last season.

Are you counting the days to the start of the season?
Yeah, me and the rest of the guys can’t wait to go out there and compete. The season is right around the corner and we couldn’t be more ready to kick it off.

What is the feeling now compared to this time last year now that you have gone out and won an FCIAC title for the first time?
Well, for me at least, last year at this time I was just concerned with doing whatever I could to make an impact on the team. I know that we had high expectations last year from everyone, and I think winning an FCIAC title was one of the goals we set for ourselves, but we didn’t cap it off like we wanted to with a state title.

Coming into this year, my personal attitude has changed in that I’m excited to be a senior leader and help set the tone for the younger guys. As a team, we’re hungrier than ever, and the goals haven’t changed, we still expect to be FCIAC and CT Class L champions.

How have preseason workouts gone?
Preseason workouts have been awesome. All the guys are getting in the weight room to get stronger for the season, and we have almost 40 kids from all levels of the high school program getting it done. I think it’s great that even freshmen and sophomores are enthusiastic about getting in the weight room. It really bodes well for the future of the program.

How does your scrimmage schedule look?
I actually have no idea about scrimmages for this season, but I know (Coach) Roy (Colsey) will be setting up some good pre-season scrimmages and tournaments like last year.

What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
I think the part of our team that is going to be much stronger than people realize is our defense. We’ve got some great junior defenders in Matt Shannon, Griffin McCarty and Jordan Nachowitz. I also think people will be surprised at the depth of our midfield. We’ve got some horses ready to come out and prove themselves. Our junior class has really stepped up in getting better, and I think they will give our senior class a lot of support this year.
