It didn’t take long for the Somers Tuskers to set the tone against three-time defending sectional champion John Jay in last year’s Section 1 title game at White Plains High School.

It happened just seven seconds into the game when Greg Petre (shown above in a photo taken by Jim Stout/MaxPreps.com) fired in a shot off a fastbreak.

If the Tuskers are to win another sectional title this year, they will need plenty more big goals from the Army-bound senior attackman, who is also expected to see a considerable amount of action at midfield this season.

* Player’s perspective archive

A two-year team co-captain, Petre is one of the leading returning players in the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region.

What has your training routine been like since football season ended?
After football, I’ve been training every day of the week. I work out three to four days a week and run about five days, doing long distance combined with speed and agility training.

Since your team does not have a lot of depth, is being in good shape even
more important?

Being in shape is going to be a big part of our game this year. Everyone trains a lot, so at the end of each game, while the other team is winded, we want to be at full strength.

As a team captain, what have you been putting the most emphasis on to your teammates as far as being ready mentally and physically this season?
I emphasize a lot of what Coach Lew (Janavey) says. We want to be a tough team that outhustles other teams. I am also emphasizing that everyone is ready physically with their training and with their stick skills so by the start of the actual season we are a step ahead of everyone else and can get better as a team.

JoJo Marasco is your team’s most noteworthy loss. How will the team try to overcome that loss?
JoJo is an amazing player, but last year there was a lot of just giving him the ball and watching. This year we are all going to have a big part in the offense. I think that we will become better because we will be playing as one big unit and not a few individual parts like last year.

Athleticism and physical play were two strengths of last year’s team. Will be that be true again this year?
We will always be a physical team. We have a lot of players that train really hard and have that tough instinct to hit and never give up on the field. This year will be no different than last. We will have a tough, blue-collar team.

    Greg is not only a great player but the true definition of what a team leader should be all about. We in Somers are very lucky to have him back for another year.

    great day for somers!!! boys hoop team beats lakeland in OT 65-56 for their first sectional win since 97. brian winters 2 Fts to tie it at end of regulation for somers … pure clutch. I seem to remember a big win in OT over lakeland in lax last year too!

  4. RedGray says:

    Speaking of OTs, as I recall Brian Winter’s brother Kevin scored the game winning goal in OT vs Yorktown in 2006 I think. Someone please refresh me on the details but I think it was like the 3rd time in 4 years Somers beat Ytown.

  5. The phant says:

    WOW,
    Lakeland just cannot beat Somers, especially when lakeland is favored or the higher seed. AS in Lax, soccer, baseball, football, and now hoops!

  7. Indian J says:

    Phant,

    Somers has lost to Lakeland/Panas four times since the first time the programs met in 2001.

    2003 12-11 OT,
    2004 8-6,
    2007 11-9,
    2008 11-8,

    This gives Somers a one win advantage in the series 5-4.

    Somers became competitive in Lacrosse in 2000. Since that time, they are 4 wins to 8 losses with John Jay and 3 wins to 6 losses with Yorktown. By this standard, Lakeland/Panas is more of a rival than John Jay or Yorktown, league and class not withstanding .

  8. Joe Lombardi says:

    Lew Janavey sent along some updates to the Somers schedule we posted earlier. Here are the changes from the old schedule:

    * Brunswick is not coming to the Red-Gray Tournament. Eighth team is now TBD.

    * No scrimmage vs. Chaminade 3-24, but Somers will be scrimmaging Darien at home on 3-25 at 4 p.m.

    * Somers will not be playing Penn Yan on May 1 in Albany.

    * Horace Greeley on April 13 is now a 7 p.m. start.
