Speed kills. It’s so important, in fact, that some players get by on it alone.

Add scoring ability, smarts and stick skills and you have a complete college prospect.

Meet St. Anthony’s midfielder Joe LoCascio, the 29th-ranked junior in the nation by Inside Lacrosse, who has given a verbal commitment to the University of Maryland.

LoCascio also has the bloodlines. His father played Division I lax, and his uncle is four-time UMass all-America goaltender and former MLL/NLL star Sal LoCascio.

LoCascio is the latest subject of our “Recruit spotlight extra” feature.

What were the main factors in your decision to attend Maryland?
Maryland fits me perfectly, perfectly in ways of academics, athletics  and my personality. My dad and my uncle both played D-I lacrosse and helped me narrow my choices all the way down to Maryland. The coaches there are great men, the layout of the campus is awesome and the athletic facilities are top of the line. The overall opportunities I will have after I graduate college was a huge factor in my commitment.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
The other schools I considered were Duke, Notre Dame, Cornell, Navy, Harvard and Loyola.

What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
I believe I need to adjust my overall strength and hit the weight room real hard before I get to college.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths would be my lacrosse IQ and athleticism. My style of play would be creative, creative where I make the best out of every situation.

What players have you looked up to as you have moved up through the varsity ranks?
John Glynn. Even though I go to St. Anthony’s, I live in a smaller town on Long Island called Lindenhurst. As I played youth lacrosse I grew up watching Glynn dominate Long Island Lacrosse and move on to Cornell. I looked up to him because I’m not the biggest guy on the field at 5-9, 170 pounds, but I work hard and told I play as big as a 6-footer like John.
