Yorktown senior midfielder Joey Porcelli had plenty of reasons to commit to Wesleyan University, in addition to the fact that it’s recently become a pipeline for current and recently graduated Husker players.

Former Yorktown standout John Froats is a sophomore at Wesleyan, 2009 YHS grad Brett Cabriele is a freshman there and teammate Remy Lieberman has also committed to Wesleyan.

Here’s a Q&A with Joey on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision to attend Wesleyan?
Wesleyan is a great school with many opportunities.  The team, the coach, the campus, the distance from home….Wesleyan had it all.

What are your thoughts about playing with three other Yorktown players there?
I’m excited to play with these guys. Remy Leiberman and I have been playing together since we were nine and he is one of my best friends. Johnny Froats was a captain when I was a sophomore. I have always looked up to him. I always like playing with Brett Cabriele. It feels good to have your home team away from home with you. It brings trust and chemistry to your game.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I liked Union. But I loved Wesleyan when I met with Coach (John) Raba in July and was hoping I didn’t have to make a choice.

What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
I want to get bigger, faster, and make decisions quicker.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I am a thinker on the field.  I get to know my teammates, their strengths, and when to pass.  I am a team player first and foremost.

Just a quick note to add to this story. With the commitments of Ridgefield’s Ian Vazquez and New Canaan’s Sam Stanton to Wesleyan, the influx of talent from the region has spread beyond Yorktown.
