KatchisDerek Katchis, one of the top defensemen at the
2008 Empire State Games, will take his skills to Colgate.

Derek Katchis emerged as one of the top defensemen in Section 1 during his career at Horace Greeley, which also included playing on the 2008 Empire State Games.

Now, he’s ready to take his game to the next level.

Katchis, now in the midst of a post-grad year at the Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, informed me late tonight that he has given a verbal commitment to Colgate University.

“I chose Colgate because it’s a very good school academically and has a very competitive D-I program,” Katchis said. “I also chose Colgate because (head) Coach (Jim) Nagle is a great guy and I could see myself playing for him.”

Katchis, who also considered Air Force, Tufts and Bowdoin, is just the second Greeley player to move on to the Division I level since 2003 graduate Terence Higgins, who played midfield at Navy. The other is attackman Jordan Fried, who is a freshman at Hofstra.

    Hey Joe,

Good color comments on the field in the Rye/Harrison football game (MSG 14). You’ll see a lot of football players playing key roles in Rye Lacrosse this Spring.

  4. Joe Lombardi says:

Thanks, SL. Did you notice the stars of the game were Cole McCormack and Jack O’Callaghan? Pretty familiar names here. (Also, Classic Dino in the halftime interview.)

  5. slacrosse says:

Yeah I would have liked for Dino to really answer your question! Vintage Dino!

Looks like Colgate has found that they are liking the area for talent. Matt Baker – Ridgefield 2009, Eric Pfiffner – Somers 2010 and now Katchis. Bucknell and Lafayette have also recruited westchester and fairfield rather successfully. I also heard that Syracuse verballed a Ridgefield kid, was it the big middie Mathias?

  7. Laxademic says:

    Ridgefield kid was defender Shannon.

  8. slacrosse says:

Colgate seems to like area we heard Michael Collins, from Rye, was up at Colgate with Katchis last weekend. It appears Collins is getting some serious D-1 sniffs. Good luck Derek you will be a great addition to Colgate!!
