Two No. 1 seeds (Garden City in Class B and Manhasset in Class C) are alive and well as we get set for today’s Nassau County finals.

But we do have one casualty. And it’s a big one.

In Class A, Farmingdale was ousted in the semifinals, falling 7-6 to upstart Baldwin.

Baldwin, the No. 5 seed, now hopes to complete and unlikely postseason run by beating Hicksville in today’s Section 8 championship game at Hofstra University in Hempstead.

The Bruins (13-5) are a fun team to watch, with a high-octane offense led by the Ohio State-bound Dominique Alexander and Kyle Rebman.

Here’s a look at today’s slate:

Section 8 (Nassau) finals: Wednesday (at Hofstra):

Class A

Hicksville 7, Baldwin 6

Prediction: Hicksville 7, Baldwin 6

Class B

No. 1 Garden City vs. No. 3 Lynbrook, 8:30 p.m.

Prediction: Lynbrook 8, Garden City 6

Class C

Manhasset 7, Cold Spring Harbor 5

Prediction: Manhasset 9, Cold Spring Harbor 5

Joe, you called it. Baldwin has been quite a story. Today should be fun.

  2. Taz says:

Interesting that absolutely NO ONE has picked CSH to upset Manhasset! Is this an odds makers dream?

  3. IslandLaxpert says:

There’s a big gap talent wise. I think had the first meeting not been such a rout people would be looking forward to it more. CSH is a great program and Bonn is a great coach. Can an upset happen? Sure. But I think everyone realizes it’s extremely unlikely.

  4. syracuse says:

    Taz,

I remember in last year’s Nassau finals I was stunned how easily CSH defeated Manhasset, so your point is well taken. If there is a team that can get inside Manhasset’s head, it’s definitely CSH, earlier loss this year notwithstanding.

I just think Manhasset is on a different level this year. I really think a Manhasset-Lafayette state final will be the best game of the day. English seems destined to go out on top, but I’m intrigued at the notion of Belinsky maybe guarding Hopkins-bound John Greeley and Manhasset’s defense, led by Bradley Cappellini, dealing with Lafayette’s potent fast break.

There’s a long way to go obviously, but I don’t think it’s unfair to look ahead just a little bit.

  5. taz says:

Cuse – all rational thoughts! I would think though that if it goes that way it would be LSM Duvnjak who guards Greeley no? Would be a fun rematch from the ’08 Empire games where LI held Greeley to not much in 2 games.

I agree Manhasset is a very different team this year. I see a lot of LI lax and English has just been a relentless force. I’ll be at the game so will have an update later.

  6. syracuse says:

    Taz,

You are correct sir. LSM Duvnjak would likely guard Greeley. But I think if there is a shortstick on Long Island that can roll with arguably the best player in the country, it is Drew Belinsky. I’ve seen him twice this year and without question, though English is the offensive MVP and Cappellini is likely the defensive MVP of Manhasset, Belinsky is no doubt the heart and soul.

  7. WhaleBelt says:

English just scored, Man up 1-0

  8. WhaleBelt says:

He just scored again. Animal. Man up 2-0

  9. Joe Lombardi says:

Thanks, Whale. Keep spouting off on the game. (Pun intended.)

It’s 2-0 ‘Set late in the first quarter.

  10. WhaleBelt says:

English with 3, Man up 3-0

  11. WhaleBelt says:

    Manhasset now up 4-0

It’s 4-0 Indians at halftime. Glen Thompkins scored Manhasset’s latest goal.

  14. WhaleBelt says:

    4-1 now

  15. WhaleBelt says:

    5-3 MANHASSET

  16. WhaleBelt says:

    5-4 manhasset…csh making a run!

  17. Joe Lombardi says:

Jeff Molinari scores a big goal 1:32 into the fourth period to make it a 6-4 Manhasset lead.

  18. Joe Lombardi says:

The Seahawks outscored Manhasset 4-1 in the third quarter, led by Matt Moynihan’s two goals.

  19. re:lax says:

Wow. What are they doing to slow Set down? Doubling English or controlling with possession? Comeback and upset brewing perhaps? Thanks for the updates

  20. WhaleBelt says:

    6-4 Set

  21. WhaleBelt says:

    Set wins 7-5

  22. Joe Lombardi says:

Final: Manhasset 7, Cold Spring Harbor 5

Much closer game than most — including myself — expected.

Manhasset will play the win over tomorrow’s Suffolk Class C title game between No. 3 Glenn and No, 1 Mount Sinai on Tuesday in the Long Island championship game at Stony Brook University.

    Next up:

No. 5 Baldwin vs. No. 2 Hicksville for the Nassau Class A title.

  23. Joe Lombardi says:

Baldwin leads 2-1 as we get set to start the second quarter.

  24. Joe Lombardi says:

The surprise team of this tournament is alive and well, gang.

Things are looking very good for the Baldwin Bruins. They have jumped out to a 5-2 halftime lead over Hicksville and Ohio State-bound star Dominique Alexander has not yet scored a goal.

  25. Jericho says:

Congrats to Set and to CSH on a great game. How do you turn an 8 or 9 goal loss into 2 goals if you’re CSH? Great coaching. Bonn is the master. Bill Cherry is a great guy but no contest in this matchup of coaches. Cherry does get his first county title though.

  26. Joe Lombardi says:

Wild run by the Hicksville Comets. It’s tied 5-5 late in the third quarter.

  27. Joe Lombardi says:

Alonzo Holcombe scores late in the third quarter to end the Hicksville run. Baldwin leads 6-5 heading into the fourth.

  28. Joe Lombardi says:

Hicksville’s Joe Leonard scores midway through the fourth to tie it at 6-6. It’s his second goal of the game.

  29. Joe Lombardi says:

Leonard scores again. It comes with just under three minutes to play and gives Hicksville a 7-6 lead.

  30. Joe Lombardi says:

    Final: Hicksville 7, Baldwin 6

Leonard’s goal marked the first time the Comets led the entire game.

Hicksville will play the winner of tomorrow’s Suffolk Class A title game between West Islip and Ward Melville on Tuesday at 5:30 in the Long Island championship game at Stony Brook University.

Next up: No. 1 Garden City vs. No. 3 Lynbrook for the Section 8 Class B title.

  31. Joe Lombardi says:

Great start for Garden City. The Trojans have jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Lynbrook midway through the first quarter led by a pair of goals by Mike Lind.

  32. LI Guy says:

Joe Great pick on Hicksville/Baldwin. I see you got it exactly right. Set/CSH pick right on the money too.

  33. Joe Lombardi says:

Lind gets his third and GC leads 4-0 after one quarter.

  34. Joe Lombardi says:

Garden City leads Lynbrook 7-0 at halftime in the Nassau Class B championship game. Albany-bound lefty attackman Will Fuller just scored the Trojans’ seventh goal shortly before the break. Fuller has 1-3.

  35. Joe Lombardi says:

Final: Garden City 11, Lynbrook 4

The Trojans will play the winner of tomorrow’s Suffolk Class B championship game between No. 4 Smithtown West and No. 2 Sayville on Tuesday in the Long Island championship game at Stony Brook University.

  36. taz says:

“Set/CSH” – some of this is cut and pastedfrom laxpower because it was easier than re posting – i thought it was very accurate

Very slow few first possessions. Clear CSH would hold the ball out extensively and try to make this a low scoring game. Koufakis fans on 2 one on one’s with the goalie. English beats Wall twice (and then the slow slide) twice in the 1st qtr. 2nd qtr English again scores over the middle plus penalty – M 3-0. Tompkins scores off the crease from Belinsky.Teams had a few EMO’s but neither converted. 4-0 at the half. CSH has been stalled warned on almost every possession.

2nd half more of the same. Slow game. Difference – some Manhasset breakdowns on defense and CSH is winning faceoffs. CSH plays faceguard/shutoff on English. Switala starts CSH with goal -beats Diaz topside with Coleman no slide. Moynihan scores on miscomunication between Cappelini and Izzo. Coleman loses clear @ midfield for Manhasset and leads to Moriarity (?) score. Moynihan another goal. (might have got those 2 confused) Izzo scores when Hanley is screened. 5-4 Manhasset after 3. Manhasset probably had 2 possessions in the qtr. CSH is inverting its midfielders and milking the clock.

4th qtr. Kennedy scores in transition when Manhasset attackman gets caught on defense with late slide. Molinari scores from up top on rocket. Back and forth then Belinsky scores on inside move right by the crease. Buhr wins faceoff and Manhasset has ball – under 2 min so keep it in is in effect. English starts and runs out of double, passes to Koufakis who drops ball. CSH in transition. Belinsky strips ball and back to Manhasset. Time out with just under a minute. English starts with ball and runs out all but 4 seconds against double then 4-5 CSH players. Ref threw flag, hat, and I’m not sure what else. Game over. 7-5

Kudos to both teams. CSH never gave in and made it a game in the 2nd half. Manhasset didn’t sucomb to the demons of past years and moves on.

Observations – English is clearly POY in Nassau. Manhasset defense needs to eliminate lapses. For Manhasset Tompkins is a player and should be on the field. Belinsky had a great game, especially in the 2nd half and does things that are not reflected in the box score.

  37. taz says:

Cuse – I agree with you. Belinsky is a formidable short stick defender! He was a huge presence in the game earlier tonight.

  38. taz says:

Damn did I misread the GC/Lynbrook game!

  39. syracuse says:

    Taz,

You’re probably not alone. GC showed up tonight for sure. Yes, Belinsky is the ultimate team player.
