Guys,

With the Sections 1, 8 and 11 finals to be held later in the week, I just wanted to throw a quick update out there for each of you in case you are looking ahead to potential state quarterfinal matchups.

Obviously Sections 8 and 11 play each other in the state quarters, but for those of you in Section 1, here’s a quick look at who your favorite team may be playing next week. Also, I’ll run down the sectional semifinals and finals in the other pertinent sections upstate.

Please check back to this page periodically throughout the week for scores and matchups going forward.

OK, here we go:

Section 2

Class A final (June 2)

Guilderland (18-2) vs. Latham Shaker (12-6)

Guilderland defeated Shenendehowa 9-8 on Saturday to get to the final. The Dutchmen’s lone losses this year came to Niskayuna. Guilderland also beat Lakeland/Panas and Mahopac, 15-10 and 11-0, respectively. This will be a formidable opponent for either Yorktown or Lakeland/Panas.

Before the emergence of schools like Nisky and Guilderland, Shaker was the class of Albany. I remember many a state quarterfinal matchup between this school and Yorktown, Lakeland and Mahopac. The Blue Bison have played just one out of section game, losing to Section 4’s Ithaca, 9-3 back on April 4. Shaker has scored 116 goals and allowed 116 goals this season, or 6.4 per game on both fronts.

Class B final (June 2)

Niskayuna (20-0) vs. Queensbury (15-5)

I have been touting Nisky’s accomplishments all season and did pick them to win the NYS Class B title back in March. The Silver Warriors have allowed just 40 goals this season, or 2 per game, and have not given up more than 4 in any one game. Nisky has outscored its two sectional tournament foes 39-1. This much is certain: Provided Nisky beats Queensbury and handles the Section 9 representative in the play-in game, either John Jay or Somers will clearly be the toughest opponent the Silver Warriors have faced all season. Nisky beat Jay 5-2 back in the middle of May.

Of Queensbury’s 20 games, 16 have come against teams .500 or worse. The Spartans lost their lone game against out-of-section competition, 6-3 to Byram Hills back on April 18.

This game will likely be over before halftime.

Class C final (June 2)

Schuylerville (6-11) vs. Greenwich Central (5-12)

Section 2’s lack of depth really starts to show once you get past the top two or so teams in Class B and in Class C it would be hard to imagine either of these teams beating anyone from Section 1. And odds are neither team will get by Section 9’s Red Hook or J.S. Burke Catholic in the state tournament play-in game. Schuylerville and Greenwich Central split during the regular season, with Greenwich winning the first game 9-8 and Schuylerville taking the rematch 8-7 in overtime.

UPDATE: In addition to the Section 8 festivities today, you have three big games upstate:

Section 2 Class A final — Guilderland vs. Latham Shaker
Section 3 Class A semi — West Genny vs. Liverpool
    Section 3 Class A semi — Fayetteville-Manlius vs. Corcoran

I expect Guilderland and West Genny to win easy, but the FM-Corcoran game could go either way. Corcoran beat FM 10-9 on May 19, in the teams’ lone regular season meeting.

For those looking ahead to the final, both lost to West Genny, but each gave the mighty Wildcats a serious go.

After losing 10-2 in the first meeting back in April, FM lost only 9-8 in the rematch on May 14. Corcoran lost to Genny 10-9 on April 23.

So, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that West Genny gets knocked off before serious June lacrosse starts, though we all know the 15-time state champs usually save their best for when the games really matter.

    Check back tonight for updates.

As for Tuesday night’s playoff games, there was some craziness upstate. In case you weren’t paying attention, Corning East, largely believed to be the premier upstate Class B team not named Niskayuna, lost to Chenango Forks, 14-9, in the Section 4 final. East had defeated Forks twice during the regular season.

It’s entirely possible we have a Chenango Forks-Nisky state final. And who amongst us not named ‘Cuse thought Sections 4 and 2 would have representatives in Rochester? (I picked a Corning East-Nisky final back in March).

Whomever survives the Long Island Final 4 of Garden City, Lynbrook, Sayville and Smithtown West will have their hands full with Nisky, provided of course neither John Jay or Somers pull an upset in the state quarters.

Also of note from Tuesday night, the second Section 6 Class C semifinal went to Silver Creek, 18-17 over Salamanca.

Most everyone else expected to win, did, including Canandaigua, Penn Yan, Lafayette, Ithaca, Orchard Park (on Monday) and Hamburg.

So, like downstate, there is the possibility that there will be some new blood in the state finals in 10 days. Who knows? Some teams may be lifiting the hardware for the first time before all is said and done.

  10. syracuse says:

    UPDATE: Section 3 Class A semifinal — Fayetteville-Manlius 15, Corcoran 6 … Impressive win for FM.

  11. Old Rugger says:

There goes my prediction of CE Nisky finals. Gilman Fan one down. Only really think you have one concern. If WI blows everyone away they are the only possible one to top Gilman and even that is a stretch. Don’t think their SOS is enough. “Cuse” be careful with your predictions in B. That JD team always has a way of improving greatly late in the season.

  12. syracuse says:

    Old Rugger,

    Good point. Very good point.

  13. syracuse says:

UPDATE: Section 3 Class A semifinal — West Genny 9, Liverpool 4 … I’m starting to think this final between Genny and FM is going to be quite memorable.

  14. syracuse says:

    UPDATE: Section 2 Class A final — Guilderland 8, Latham Shaker 4

  15. syracuse says:

Here are your upstate sectional champions and schedule for finals. Please check back to this page periodically over the next few days for updates.

    Section 2

    Class A champ — Guilderland.

The Dutchmen (19-2) will next play Section 9 champ Warwick Valley (19-1) on Saturday in the NYS tournament play-in game. Traditionally, Section 1 and 2 have owned Section 9 in this game and in Class B. Expect Guilderland to move on to Tuesday’s state quarterfinal in Albany against either Yorktown or Lakeland/Panas.

    Class B champ — Niskayuna.

The Silver Warriors (21-0), the top-ranked team in the state according to the latest New York State Sports Writers poll, will take on Section 9’s Saugerties (14-2) on Saturday. This one will likely be quite one-sided, with Nisky tuning up for Tuesday’s matchup against John Jay or Somers.

    Class C champ — Schuylerville.

The Black Horses (7-11) will face a tall order in the play-in game against Section 9’s Red Hook (13-5) on Saturday. Rye or Putnam Valley awaits the winner.

    Section 3

    Class A final — West Genny (19-1) vs. Fayetteville-Manlius (16-4)

Friday night’s matchup pits two backyard rivals in a game that has traditionally gone one way (and you all know which way), but FM is coming off a convincing 15-6 win over Corcoran in the semifinals. Both FM and Corcoran lost 1-goal matchups to West Genny, the No. 1 team in its class in the state, this season.

    Class B final — Jamesville-DeWitt (17-3) vs. Carthage (17-3)

When these two get together on Friday it will be a matchup of two of the more historically successful Syracuse-area teams. JD has won state championships before and Carthage has produced some of the best NCAA D-I players to ever play … i.e. the Powell clan.

    Class C final — Lafayette (20-0) vs. Skaneateles (18-1)

This is a rematch of an April matchup that Lafayette won 13-9. Odds are, the winner this time will be the upstate representative in the state final in Rochester.

    Section 4

    Class A champ — Ithaca (17-2)

The Little Red will have a bye into the state quarters due to the fact that Section 10 does not have Class A lacrosse.

    Class B champ — Chenango Forks (15-5)

Coming off its shocking 14-9 win over Corning East, ranked No. 2 in the state in Class B, Forks will next play Section’s 10’s St. Lawrence Central (17-4) on Saturday in the play-in game.

Class C champ — Seton Catholic Central (16-3)

The Saints will take on Section 10’s Salmon River (17-0) on Saturday.

The rest of the sectional final matchups:

    Section 5

Class A final (Friday) — Webster Thomas (17-1) vs. Fairport (16-2)

Class B final (Friday) — Canandaigua (18-2) vs. Irondequoit (14-4)

Class C final (Friday) — Penn Yan (18-2) vs. Livonia (14-6)

    Section 6

Class A final (Friday) — Orchard Park (18-1) vs. Frontier (14-6)

Class B final (Friday) – Hamburg (17-2) vs. Sweet Home (14-3)

Class C final (Friday) — Gowanda (15-4) vs. Silver Creek (9-9)

  16. Sec 1 Lax Fan says:

    Silver Creek 18, Salamanca 17

do not know squat about either program, but have to think 39 faceoffs should be near a record for state playoffs.

how does JD look? Last year they ran the table…

  17. Syracuse says:

UPDATE: upstate sectional finals results …

    Section 5 Class B final — Canandaigua 17, Irondequoit 6
    Section 6 Class B final — Hamburg 14, Sweet Home 6
    Section 3 Class C final — Lafayette 14, Skaneateles 10
    Section 5 Class C final — Penn Yan 10, Livonia 7
    Section 6 Class C final — Silver Creek 9, Gowanda 8

    More to come …

  18. Syracuse says:

    UPDATE: Section 3 Class B final — Jamesville-DeWitt 8, Carthage 6

  19. Syracuse says:

    UPDATE: Section 3 Class A final — West Genny 11, Fayetteville-Manlius 9

  20. Syracuse says:

    UPDATE: Section 5 Class A final — Webster Thomas 12, Fairport 11

  21. Syracuse says:

    UPDATE: Section 6 Class A final — Orchard Park 17, Frontier 3

  22. PV Lax says:

Put Valley will be playing Schuylerville of Section II on Tuesday in the state quarters. Schuylerville beat Red Hook 17-9 today in the play in again.
