What do you get when you take the No. 4- and No. 10-ranked teams in the nation, throw in two more regional powers and two traditionally strong Section 1 teams?

The Red/Gray Shootout at Somers. It’s going on today from 9 a.m. to about 3 p.m. The weather is good. The lacrosse is great. So you should swing by, check it out and come over and say hi. A group of Somers parents has even put together rosters for all the teams, and hamburgers, hot dogs and refreshments are available.

Though it’s a preseason event, you would be hard-pressed to find a more impressive field of teams in one venue other than maybe the state championship.

After all, Mountain Lakes (N.J.) is fourth in Inside Lacrosse’s first in-season rankings. The Lakers have two players bound for Duke (midfielders Jake Tripucka and Greg DeLuca) and another (middie Chase Winter) headed to Hopkins. Winter and Tripucka are ranked among the top 20 seniors in the nation. Virginia-bound defenseman Scott McWilliams is the No. 2 junior in the country.

St. Anthony’s, which is ranked 10th, is led by Thomas Schreiber, the fifth-ranked junior in the country.

Somers, of course, has the nation’s eighth-ranked senior, Syracuse-bound attckman/midfielder Joe Marasco, as well as Colgate-bound classmate Erik Pfiffner and several other players who should go on to play at the college level.

Don Bosco (N.J.), Guilderland and Fox Lane, with Ithaca-bound goalie Luke Robinson, complete the field.

For each scrimmage, there will be two 23-minutes halves with a running clock and two-minute halftime.
